Happy Veterans Day, this is great!
What year was it taken?
I was hiding out in mexico for a few weeks…so I have alot of catching up to do
Thank you for your service. This is a GREAT photo! 🙂
Is this Toby? Wow.
Tis I, maybe 1972?
Gigi, I was wondering where you went? Work in Mexico, or fun? I hope it was fun.
Underway replenishment is the strangest ballet. We shoot a shot line from one ship to the other. They pull ever larger lines till we get to the braided steel rope.
While maintaining the same course and speed, we send pallet after pallet over the ropes to the other ship who empty it and send it back or keep it, depending.
We had everything. Missiles, rockets of all kinds, bombs of all sizes, small arms, artillery shells, nukes. Everybody stayed well away from us. Our escort was a nuke sub. It wouldn’t evaporate like surface things would.
They had an accident at our home port in ’44, Port Chicago, CA. Evaporated 5 ships, little was found of anything, all hands lost. An anchor was blown a mile away.
The city was leveled, but no one hurt there. Navy bought the town. It was eerie to go to work and see the foundations and the couple buildings left and consider why.

Beard and long hair? What special ops………….
Wild story.Thanks for sharing!
Interesting. I didn’t know about Port Chicago.
Hey, Toby, today is Veteran’s Day and I wanted to leave this comment to thank you for your part in keeping America safe and peaceful. You guys are great!! Go Veterans!
Frankly, Happ, I kept my part drunk & disorderly. I wonder if my expulsion order from the Philippines is still in effect?
Hee, hee, that’s funny, yet, I believe you. You probably needed that to survive the crazy years. I spent a year on an Air Force base in Japan when I was in 7th grade because my step dad was an Airman. Attended the school on base. Very memorable year, indeed. It changed my life completely from that point on.
I have mixed feelings about life in the military.
Frog, you’re a human!
Yes, Bounce, I was human THEN. One day A girl kissed me and now I have this incredible desire to eat flies. i thought it was the other way round!?!
Hi, I’m an admin for a group called Tree Photos (winners announced), and we’d love to have this added to the group!
