Avg Anti-virus Delivers Security Continuity for Washington School District

Pasco School District in Washington State consists of 16 school campuses, including Pasco High School, named by Newsweek as one of the best American public high schools in the country for the past three years. The district’s four servers support an extended network of more than 3000 workstations, serving 12,000 students in grades K-12 as well as more than 1,200 faculty and staff

For the past six years, the Pasco School District technology team has trusted AVG Network Edition and the support team at Walling Data to assure the security of the network. Kevin Stiles, who has been a network specialist for the school district for 12 years, remembered what it was like before they switched to AVG Network Edition:

“Our original approach to managing security was pretty archaic, even at that time. We were buying thousands of subscriptions to McAfee and installing them one-by-one on each computer, because the cost on paper was lower than taking a centralized approach and distributing the software to all workstations via a server-based system. But the cost in terms of time, energy, and efficiency was enormous.”

It was becoming apparent to everyone on the team that this approach could not be sustained for much longer, and on top of this, the level of protection provided by their existing product appeared to be suffering.

“The ever-increasing maintenance needs eventually became too much for our staff, and threats were getting past the McAfee defenses,” continued Stiles. “So we decided to bite the bullet and look for a new solution, as well as a new way of doing things.”

“Several members of our IT staff used AVG Free Edition on their personal computers or had experienced other AVG products at previous jobs. When we heard so many colleagues echo support for AVG, we decided to give AVG’s Network Edition product a try.”

First Impressions Count

Michelle Nisbett, secretary to the director of technology for the Pasco School District, was charged with sourcing a quality supplier for AVG Anti-Virus. Her search soon led her to

Walling Data, the longest-standing and highest-volume distributor of AVG Technologies solutions in North America. Walling Data is also the only distributor to offer all its customers free, unlimited, U.S.-based pre- and post-sales support.

“The service from Walling Data has been great from the very beginning,” recalled Nisbett. “When I called them for information, the sales rep was super friendly, nice and easy to work with. What won me over was the politeness and respect, the way the rep spoke to me. Unlike some people in the tech business, Walling’s rep didn’t talk down to me. He made me feel like an important part of the process, which was a big plus for me.”

The district moved forward with Walling Data and purchased 3,000 licenses of AVG Network Edition, taking advantage of the company’s generous educational discount program. Six years later, the team has no regrets.

Since the school district made the switch to AVG, it’s been clear to Stiles that not only does the protection cost less money, but it also takes a much smaller toll on the team’s time.

“Not only is AVG less expensive than the McAfee product we were using, it saves us money in other ways too,” said Stiles. “Because AVG protects our Network so well, we’re not spending time and money to repair the effects of virus infections, and the software is so easy to manage, it takes very little resource time to maintain and manage. AVG and Walling Data have saved us money, time and stress.”

This year, the school district upgraded its entire network to AVG Anti-Virus Network Edition 8.0. “The process went very smoothly,” noted Stiles. “The software gets better every year, and our resource usage has stayed low.”

Nisbett, too, was happy with the upgrade process. “Walling Data was there for us again when it came time to upgrade,” she said “They continue to show me that they care about our school district and they’re always willing to help out when I need advice on how to handle some aspect of the process. I’d recommend Walling Data to anyone.”

Walling Data Helps Illinois School District Convert to avast! antivirus

Hickory, NC – April 24th, 2009 – Chris Franzen, technology coordinator for the Nokomis School District in Nokomis, IL manages any project, issue and question related to technology among the district’s 700 students and faculty members.  He’s a one man show, which means that he never has a dull moment and has to make smart decisions about managing his time.  When he joined the district last year and learned that it was running an outdated antivirus solution on its network, finding new antivirus software topped his to-do list.

“The network was running an antique edition of Norton Antivirus, which was not centrally managed, meaning I had to check over 310 computers and 10 servers weekly to make sure the software was updated,” Franzen recalled.   “That process demanded too much of my time and I was eager to find a product to replace Norton.”

Fate Intervenes

Last month Franzen was perusing a forum for school network administrators when he learned that value-added distributor Walling Data was offering a special promotion to schools on his personal favorite antivirus solution, avast!

“I didn’t need to be convinced that avast! antivirus was the best solution to replace Norton because I already used it on my home PC and recommend it to all my friends and family,” said Franzen.  “avast! is a great product and perfect fit for the school district.  It’s strong enough to keep threats at bay, it’s affordable and above all, it’s centrally managed and I can customize it completely to my liking.  That’s a nice feature that other antivirus products often don’t offer.”

Although Franzen was sure that avast! antivirus was the best fit for the Nokomis School District, he needed to convince others to this was the time to make the change.

“Actually, we were not slated to make any software purchases until this summer, but Walling Data was offering such an unbelievable value on avast! that the deal was just too sweet to pass up,” Franzen said.  “So, I approached the superintendent about the deal and explained all the product’s benefits.  That’s how I got approval to move ahead with the purchase of avast! antivirus enterprise suite.”

A day later, Franzen called Walling Data to place the order and joined the more than 75 million registered users of avast! antivirus.

Unbeatable Prices and Customer Service

Walling Data is the only value-added distributor of avast! antivirus products to provide free, unlimited, domestic phone and remote support for all of its customers.  This service was something Frazen raved about.

“The best thing about purchasing from Walling Data is the support team that is willing to help you as much and often as you need it,” Franzen said.  “They installed avast! on our entire network for me and I followed along as it went.  It deployed beautifully on all our Vista and XP machines.”

He continued, “The sales and support team at Walling Data replies very quickly to emails, helped me out with any issue or question, and went above and beyond what you’d expect from a software distributor.  And to top it off, their prices for schools are unbeatable.”

Walling Data Secures State-of-the-Art School Network with AVG Anti-Virus

Hickory, NC – April 24th, 2009 – The Chambers County Board of Education prides itself on operating some of Alabama’s most high-tech, state-of-the-art information technology systems. The Board oversees 11 schools in the Valley and LaFayette areas, including six elementary schools, two middle schools, two secondary schools, and a cutting-edge business/industry certified career technical center. Nine of the county’s 10 schools are certified by the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges (SACS), a body founded in 1895 to improve education throughout the American South through accreditation, and the 10th is close to completing the accreditation process.

William Groover, the district’s technology director, leads the school system’s efforts in providing a technology environment that will adequately prepare students for tomorrow’s job market. At the classroom level, this manifests itself as a better-than-average ratio of students to computers. In addition, Groover manages the 1,400 workstations and 68 servers that serve the district’s 450 faculty and staff members and 4,200 students.

AVG: Still the Leader of the Pack

This past fall, the district was nearing the end of its license agreement for AVG Anti-Virus Network Edition.  While Groover and his staff were satisfied with AVG’s protection and ease of use, they decided it would be prudent to re-test it against the latest iterations from the other major anti-virus suppliers.

“To keep our network at the cutting edge, we needed to be sure AVG was keeping its edge as well,” said Groover. “So, we put it through its paces alongside Computer Associates, McAfee, Trend Micro, and Symantec.”

Groover was delighted to learn after the tests were complete that AVG was still head-and-shoulders above the rest of the pack.

“AVG wasn’t the cheapest solution, nor was it the most expensive, but the combination of the overall performance, strength, value for money, and ease of use proved that it was still the best anti-virus product for our school system,” he concluded.

One area in particular about the other products that concerned Groover about was the tendency towards incomprehensible and/or misplaced error messages.

“AVG software tells you when there is something wrong, and you can trust that when it raises a flag, there is something that needs to be looked at,” he noted. “AVG doesn’t give you error messages that are unwarranted, unlike other anti-virus products.”

Groover is also sold on the simplicity of AVG’s network management capabilities.

“AVG’s ease of management is a huge plus for us. It is such a benefit to be able to selectively target which workstations AVG will be pushed out to and then do so from one centralized location,” he added.

Walling Data Leads the Pack, Too

After deciding to renew their subscription to AVG Anti-Virus Network Edition, Groover contacted the distributor from whom they’d purchased their current licenses.

“Last time we renewed our subscription, we went with an overseas vendor,” said Groover. “But this time I was less than impressed. I placed several calls to their offices and never got a response. There was clearly little point in continuing to work with them, so I decided to look for another experienced AVG distributor.”

After a quick swing around the AVG website, Groover learned that Walling Data was the leading distributor of AVG solutions to the Education marketplace, so he gave them a call.

“We were delighted to find that Walling could not only give us a great discount on our educational license but would give us unlimited technical support at no extra cost,” recalled Groover. “A lot of companies offer free support for a certain time period, but with Walling there was no question about it – you call them anytime you need help and they are there for you.”

Walling Data is the longest-standing and highest-volume distributor of AVG Technologies solutions in North America. The company is also the only distributor to offer all its customers – resellers and end-users – free, unlimited, U.S.-based pre- and post-sales support.

Groover and his team is currently deploying the AVG upgrade across their networks

“We had some initial questions about setting up the software and rolling it out, but after talking to the Walling support team, everything is moving along just fine,” said Groover. “We like the new version – and our new supplier – a whole lot better.”
