The Facebook Phenomenon – 8 Simple Tips for Making Friends & Customers

Once a social platform for college students, the 40 million active membership site facebook is the latest buzzword in social media marketing. However, most members are extremely online savvy and they smell blatant advertisements from miles away. It is important to know some basics and gain experiences in utilizing the site and interacting with its members before you start planning your facebook marketing adventure.

1. Create a profile. The first step is to create a profile. Sign up using your real name and upload some pictures. If you do not have an email with a top-level edu domain, by default you join a regional network based on your zip code or international address. Later, you have the option to join your company’s network and change your regional networks. You can change your networks twice in a 60-day period.

Always upload a profile picture. If you don’t upload a picture, facebook places a default question mark icon. It is a good strategy to show your face in facebook. Don’t use group pictures for your profile because others may have difficulty identifying you in the group pictures. Don’t use logos, your cute cat or dogs’ pictures, or a picture of your expensive car and boat.

You don’t have to fill all the profile information. Fill only the information you are comfortable sharing with others. If you want to find dates using facebook, fill up the relationship status feature of your profile accordingly. Don’t change the status often because others will notice it and doubt your trustworthiness.

2. Make friends. The site can find active facebook friends for you using emails in your address books of a few free web email providers like yahoo, hotmail, gmail, etc. Once you get a few friends, new friend requests will pour in from your friends of friends. You can also search for friends and send requests. Work on creating a network of 100 to 200 friends. Don’t make friends with celebrities because in most cases these are fake profiles setup for marketing purposes.

3. Upload pictures and videos. Start uploading some interesting pictures and group them in albums of travel pictures, baby shower photos, bachelor party scenes, etc. Pictures help people connect with your life without meeting you face to face. Always upload a number of related pictures or themes.

Create a random albums and put all your random pictures in the random album. Tag your pictures to identify people on the pictures. When you tag your friends in your pictures, they show up in their wall. You can also share your albums with others outside facebook. 4. Use friends’ walls and never post on your own wall. You have a wall in facebook for others to write notes. Don’t write in your own wall. Write in your friends’ walls. Your friends will write notes, share videos or links in your wall. You do the same in your friends’ walls. When a friend posts something on your wall, reply to the post. If you find the posting annoying, politely ask them to back off and clean up your wall.

5. Join a few groups. There are all sorts of organic groups in facebook. These are groups of people with similar interests. Find a few that interest you and join them. You can create your own group but first find out if one exists on the same topic. This is an excellent place to be creative and get support from a bunch of people for your cause.

6. Create events and invite people. If you want to host a party, this is the feature you will use. Create your events and invite others to join. You can make an event public for your friends to see or private for the invitees to browse. Under my event, you can browse your friends’ public events. You will immediately know who are your fake friends because they did not invite you to their gala dinner they are hosting.

7. Send notes and share links. You send notes to your friends. Depending on the topic, you can send a note to a few friends or to all friends in your network. Don’t send chain letter notes because people find these repulsive. Your notes show up in your friends’ news feeds or on their walls. A tagged note shows up on the wall, otherwise, it is found in the homepage news feed. Use share for sharing links, even though you can use this feature for sharing notes. Share that link of a cheap travel-booking site you have found while surfing the net with friends planning their upcoming vacations.

8. Visit your homepage everyday. Besides your profile page in facebook, you also have a homepage. You homepage displays collaborative news feeds of all your friends, event and group invitations, friendship requests, friends’ birthdays, etc. If you want to know what is going on in your facebook friend circle, visit your homepage everyday.

Taylor Swift: Grammy’s Golden Child

If anything, the recent Grammy Awards ceremony held last January 31, 2010 at Staples Center in Los Angeles, California proved the fact that a fresh-faced, twenty-something from Wyomissing, Pennsylvania has really dominated the scene with her brand of country love songs, marking off a new era in country music. With four major awards that she had won that night-edging out more experienced fellow country singers such as Carrie Underwood, LeAnn Womack, Keith Urban and the like, Taylor Swift proved that she is really Grammy’s golden child.

Bursting into the scene in 2006 with her self-titled debut album, Swift steadily acquired a solid fan base as she continued to win fans’ and critics’ approval for her songs, which she mostly wrote herself. In her early days, Swift was initially likened to fellow country singers such as Carrie Underwood and LeAnn Rimes. That is until late November of 2008, when Swift released her phenomenal studio album which debuted at the #1 spot on the Billboard 200 Album Charts, cementing her crossover appeal to both pop and country music fans and effectively stepping out of Underwood’s and Rimes’ shadows. More hit country love songs followed, along with various awards from the CMA, the VMAs, the AMAs, the Billboard Music Awards, the People’s Choice Awards and the Grammys, among many others.

Although she seems like an overnight success to most, things have not always been peachy for the young artist. She did languish for many years before asking popular songwriter Liz Rose to co-write with her when she was an unknown talent at that time. Fortunately, her risks paid off, and from a virtual nobody, she metamorphosed into one of the most bankable artists of the year, crossing over from country to pop and dominating both charts throughout 2009.

In one of the most touching moments of the night, in her acceptance speech for winning the Best Country Album award for “Fearless,” said, ‘“This is my first time walking up those stairs to accept a Grammy on national television. I just keep thinking back to like when you’re in second grade and you sing at your talent show for the first time. People joke around and they say, ‘Oh maybe we’ll see you at the Grammys someday.’ But that seems like an impossible dream,” she enthused, “And I just feel like I’m standing here accepting an impossible dream right now and I just thank you so much for that.”

Of course, throughout the night, her acceptance speeches remained uninterrupted unlike last year’s MTV VMA fiasco, during which she was rudely interrupted by Kanye West. As the rest of the Awards ceremony unfolded, Swift dazzled and shined, winning a total of four awards including trophies for Album Of The Year, Best Female Country Vocal Performance, Best Country Song, and Best Country Album. Her wins were no easy achievements as she beat out more experienced country singers such as Miranda Lambert, Martina McBride, Underwood and Lee Ann Womack for Best Female Country Vocal Performance; as well as Trace Adkins, Jamey Johnson, Lady Antebellum and Billy Currington for Best Country Song; Zac Brown Band, George Strait and Keith Urban for Best Country Album; and Beyoncé Knowles, The Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga and the Dave Matthews Band for the most important award for the night, Album of the Year.

Social Media Marketing and Facebook

Why You Need A Facebook “Profile” (If You Don’t Have One Already)

Over the past few years, social networking sites enabled by Web 2.0 technologies have dramatically changed the way we use the Internet. What was once a one-way connection has transformed into a dynamic connective medium, allowing users to share a wide range of content including blogs, photos, videos, and much more.

Yet how have social networking sites like Facebook changed the way online marketers advertise online? For one, they’ve made our jobs much easier. Facebook is the ideal medium for advertising within an environment that’s viral by nature. These online social directories use an interactive format that allows users to create a personal profile, connect to other users, and share content.

In a sense, these users have already effectively segmented themselves, coming together through like interest groups and connecting through content. These behaviors, which are inherent to social media and enabled by Web 2.0, create valuable networks of targeted and specific demographic groups. Now more than ever, the “Net Generation” is becoming involved in social media and presenting online marketers with the chance to market to predefined segments of online users, positioning branded messages on sites where these users spend time online.

Moreover, these social networking sites are growing at an exponential rate, adding more and more users from more diverse backgrounds. Initially, Facebook was created only for college students, but last year, it was opened to anyone with an email address. According to Microsoft, Facebook is the sixth most trafficked site in the U.S., and now has over 73 million registered users in 40,000 different collegiate, high school, work-related, and geographic networks. This represents a 530% growth rate over one year alone.

The tactic through which advertisers communicate with these segmented online audiences is known as Social Media Marketing (SMM). SMM has become a popular tool for search engine optimization (SEO) thanks to its unique ability to improve website visibility, name recognition, and brand awareness among specific online audiences through the acquisition of a network of relevant links.

So what opportunities does Facebook present for targeted online marketing efforts? Among Internet users ages 18-24, Facebook placed first on the list of favorite sites in Youth Trends most recent survey. Over 70% of females ages 17-25 indicated that Facebook was their favorite site in terms of time spent online. For males, this figure was still a powerful 56%. These demographic is clearly technology-driven, thanks to their growing up in a culture that considers time online an integral aspect of daily life. More than half of those surveyed visited Facebook at least once a day, logging an average of 35 minutes on the site.

Furthermore, these users are familiar with online environments and are adept at seeking out and finding specific pieces of content they’re interested in. Thus, social networking sites, especially Facebook, present online marketers with the opportunity to engage users with advertising messages at critical moments of relevance.

So how can we utilize social media marketing to effectively engage these elusive audiences of young adults? Below are several ideas on how to utilize social media marketing on Facebook.

Connect Through Groups:

Facebook has an infinite number of shared interest groups which users join for a myriad of reasons. These groups cover an unlimited number of subjects and interests, from marine biology to snowboarding to politics to rap music to Italian food. No matter what your interest or target market, there is a group for you. Take it from me. I’ve been a registered Facebook user, or “Facebooker” since 2003, and I’ve seen a group for everything, literally. Many even have a local focus, like Denver Broncos fan groups or Denver Chinese Students Group. Each of these groups has its own page with a forum, discussion board, photo gallery, etc. This is the best place to position messages meant for specific niche audiences, as you’re almost guaranteed everyone who sees it fits your target profile. In the past, when I was trying to drive traffic to a video site I was working for, I placed descriptive and enticing links to relevant videos on the group’s “wall,” or discussion board. I saw great results as many of the members of this particular group, which was devoted to skiing, followed these links to watch videos about their favorite sport, skiing.

Connect Through Applications:

Recently, Facebook has opened up its platform to outside developers who have created innumerable applications, ranging from fantasy stock picking simulators to video games of “beer pong” to world maps marking desired travel destinations. Users can add as many of these applications as they like to their profiles, creating opportunities for marketers and developers alike to subtly integrate marketing messages into these applications and their functions. Many developers have already done so and are not doubt reaping some major benefits, not only through increased brand awareness but through traffic driven from Facebook, which many have bridged to their own sites.

Connect Through Content:

Because Facebook allows users to post videos, images, links, photos, and more, advertisers can seamlessly utilize social media marketing strategies to connect with these groups through content. By positioning your content where your target audience is, you can be assured your brand will be right in front of their eyes as they interact with your message. Facebook is a repository for an endless amount of consumer data, what many experts have dubbed “a community in a box.” So why not leverage this data by getting involved? Connect through content.

Connect Through Events:

As Facebook has grown, it has added an “Events” section where users can post information about upcoming events and then invite their Facebook friends to attend. The entire section of events is searchable, and users can quickly locate events they’re interested in, find the host’s name, location, time, and even a description of the event. What’s more, Facebook gives each event its own page, where users can RSVP, decline to attend, or even post information on the event page’s public discussion wall, like what to wear, what to bring, etc. This presents social media marketers with a valuable opportunity to post events and then invite people that are most likely interested in attending. In my own experience with this medium, I’ve created events for clients and then posted information and invites within groups that align. For example, when promoting an upcoming reggae concert or college football game, find as many groups related to reggae music, college football, music and sports that you can, and post the event information on their group discussion boards to ensure that anyone who’s interested now knows and attends.

Connect Through Mobile Devices:

Just this week, Facebook announced that it has partnered with RIM, or Research In Motion, and their BlackBerry device. In addition to BlackBerrys, Facebook is accessible to a wide range of other mobile devices. This presents valuable opportunities for advertisers to reach potential customers on a local level, positioning their company presence at the moment of relevance.

Still, Facebook’s explosive growth hasn’t been without challenges. In response to criticism from a plethora of groups, Facebook recently added additional security measures in an effort to better protect private information. In addition to assuaging privacy fears, this is sure to encourage more users to join the site and share more information about themselves. Yet this will also force social media marketers to be more innovative and creative when identifying and locating target audiences.

As you can see, Facebook users have taken care of the segmentation process, connecting themselves through content and shared interests.

The company I work for, Fusionbox, uses social media marketing to combine the objectives of Internet marketing with the capabilities of social media sites and Web 2.0 technologies. Click here for more information on social media marketing.

Essentially, our SMM services create powerful forms of viral marketing that leverage the large audiences and user communities of social media sites. Whether on MySpace, YouTube, Digg, Facebook, Del.icio.us, Flickr, or any number of others, SMM revolves around the creation and connection of users to companies through unique content.

For this reason, SMM can be utilized to build a network of links, spread brand messages, increase visibility and awareness, and even manage your company’s reputation online. After all, these social media sites each have millions of registered users, grouped into like-interest communities. Now all you have to do is discern where your target audience is congregating online. What more could a marketer ask for? No other channel allows companies to declare their identity, service offerings, value proposition and location within such a targeted environment.

VIPRE Antivirus + Antispyware

Despite still being relatively new in the competitive field of antivirus software, VIPRE AntiVirus + AntiSpyware comes out swinging this year with what our team of reviewers found to be the best, lightest-running antivirus software for 2010.

The balancing act with antivirus and anti-spyware is managing to be light-running while still providing PC protection.

This is one place where VIPRE delivers on its promise better than any of its competitors.

Our testing consistently showed VIPRE to be among the best performing software in every test we ran.

In fact, some of the older better known antivirus programs like McAfee and Norton didn’t do nearly as well as VIPRE this year.

In comparison, VIPRE’s light resource usage, strong antivirus and antispyware protection, and excellent customer service consistently pushed it to the front of the pack.

We really were impressed from start to finish.

Installation is a snap. The user interface is clean and easy-to-use. Email protection is reliable and solid.

Overall virus, spyware, and malware protection is equal to or better than we’ve seen in most any antivirus software–especially from software that’s a relative newcomer compared to the household names like McAfee, Norton, and Kaspersky.

We’re glad to see such a strong competitor like VIPRE Antivirus + Antispyware enter the field with such solid antivirus software.

VIPRE Antivirus + Antispyware Features

Real-time Antivirus Protection

Keeps your computer safe from viruses, spyware, and other malware 24/7. Stops malicious software from accessing your computer before they can do any harm.

Virus Removal

Easily removes even nasty viruses, worms, trojans, and other malware from PCs.

Spyware Removal

Email Protection

Instant Messaging Protection

Free Malware Removal

If a virus, trojan, worm, or other malware somehow gets through your defenses while you’re a VIPRE or VIPRE Premium antivirus subscriber, Sunbelt’s dedicated in-house team of malware removal specialists will remove the infection free.

If you’re looking for a solid, stand-alone antivirus software this year, VIPRE is an easy choice. We like its simple, powerful antivirus and antispyware combo.

Real-time antivirus protection performed much better than we expected for a newcomer like VIPRE, and we were equally impressed by its light footprint. (VIPRE has one of the lightest resource usage profiles we’ve seen this year).

Overall, VIPRE Antivirus + Antispyware is an easy choice for consumers or businesses who want a straightforward, solid antivirus software solution.

All-in-all it’s solid, complete PC protection worthy of our 2010 Editor’s Choice.
