Tonga: A Paradise On Earth

By

Chandrasekharan Kunnath

Introduction

I lived 6 years in Tonga. I was selected by the Commonwealth Fund for Technical Cooperation (CFTC), London as an expert to work as the Staff Training Officer, Tonga Development Bank on a 4 year assignment. After completing the assignment, I continued to live in Tonga for 2 years practicing privately as an accountant registered by the Tonga Society of Accountants.

The Friendly Islands

Tonga is popularly known as the Friendly Islands and for good reason: one of the first things that a foreigner notices is the Tongan smile. It is a warm, welcoming smile of a happy and guileless person. As you walk along the road, you find everyone smiling at and greeting everyone else. No one is a stranger: everyone is a friend. Such behaviour is extremely rare in the rest of the world. The Tongan smile is unconditional: it does not depend on status or rank or appearance.

Geography

Area: 747 sq. km. (288 sq. mi.).
Cities: Capital–Nuku’alofa (pop. 34,000).
Terrain: 171 islands, mainly raised coral but some volcanic; 48 inhabited.
Climate: Tropical, modified by trade winds. Warm season (December to May), cool season (May to December).

Tonga is an archipelago directly south of Western Samoa. Its 171 islands, 48 of them inhabited, are divided into three main groups–Vava’u, Ha’apai, and Tongatapu–and cover an 800-kilometer (500 mi.)-long north-south line. The largest island, Tongatapu, on which the capital city of Nuku’alofa is located, covers 257 square kilometers (99 sq. mi.). Geologically the Tongan islands are of two types: most have a limestone base formed from uplifted coral formations; others consist of limestone overlaying a volcanic base.

The climate is basically subtropical with a distinct warm period (December-April), during which the temperatures rise above 32oC (90oF), and a cooler period (May-November), with temperatures rarely rising above 27oC (80oF). The temperature increases from 23oC to 27oC (74oF to 80oF), and the annual rainfall is from 170 to 297 centimeters (67-117 in.) as one moves from Tongatapu in the south to the more northerly islands closer to the Equator. The mean daily humidity is 80%.

People

Nationality: Noun and adjective–Tongan(s).
Population (2010 est.): 103,365.
Age structure (2010 est.): 38% below 15; 8% over 60.
Annual population growth rate (2010): 0.3%.
Ethnic groups: Tongan 98%, other Polynesian, European.
Religions: Christian.
Languages: Tongan, English.
Education: Literacy (2006)–98%.
Health: Infant mortality rate (2006)–19/1,000. Life expectancy at birth: 68.56 years (female 73 years; male 67.3 years).
Work force (2006): 35,670; Agriculture–65%.
Unemployment (2006): 4.9%.

Tongans, a Polynesian group with a very small mixture of Melanesian, represent more than 98% of the inhabitants. The rest are European, mixed European, and other Pacific Islanders. There also are about 500 Chinese.

More than two-thirds of the population of the Kingdom of Tonga lives on its main island, Tongatapu. An increasing number of Tongans have moved into Nuku’alofa, Tonga’s capital and only urban and commercial center, where increasingly Western and indigenous Polynesian cultural and living patterns have blended. For instance, the extended family lifestyle is declining, with young couples choosing to live on their own. Nonetheless, village life and kinship ties continue to be important throughout the country. The Christian faith that has dominated Tongan life for almost two centuries is still influential. All commerce and entertainment activities cease on Saturday from midnight, and the constitution declares the Sabbath to be sacred, forever. Attempts to amend the Sunday law in recent years have been unsuccessful.

Primary education between ages 6 and 14 is compulsory and free in state schools. The state owns and operates 99% of the primary schools and 44% of secondary schools. Higher education includes teacher training, nursing and medical training, a small private university, a women’s business college, and a number of private agricultural schools. Most higher education is pursued overseas.

Government

Type: Constitutional hereditary monarchy.
Constitution: 1875 (revised 1970).
Independence: June 4, 1970.
Branches: Executive–monarch, prime minister, and cabinet. Legislative–unicameral Legislative Assembly. Judiciary (Privy Council, Court of Appeal, Supreme Court, Land Court and Magistrates’ Court)
Administrative subdivisions: Three main island groups–Ha’apai, Tongatapu, and Vava’u.
Political parties: People’s Democratic Party, Friendly Islands Human Rights and Democratic Movement, Paati Langafonua Tu’uloa, Tonga Democratic Labour Party.
Suffrage: Universal at age 21.
Central government budget (2009-2010 est.): 0.1 million.

Tonga is the South Pacific’s last Polynesian kingdom. Its executive branch includes the prime minister and the cabinet, which becomes the Privy Council when presided over by the monarch. In intervals between legislative sessions, the Privy Council makes ordinances, which become law if confirmed by the legislature. The unicameral Legislative Assembly is dominated by the royal family and nobles. It consists of nine nobles who are elected by the 33 hereditary nobles of Tonga; nine people’s representatives elected by universal adult suffrage for 3-year terms; and the cabinet of 12-14 ministers, appointed by the monarch. The governors of Ha’apai and Vava’u are appointed to their offices and serve as ex officio members of the cabinet. The Legislative Assembly sits for 4 or 5 months a year.

The only form of local government is through town and district officials who have been popularly elected since 1965. The town official represents the central government in the villages; the district official has authority over a group of villages.

Zero Crime, Zero Poverty, Zero Pollution & Zero Corruption

When I left Tonga in 1993, Tonga had hardly any crime, poverty or pollution. I have since heard disturbing reports of rioting and violence after His Majesty King Taufa’ahau Tupou IV, a truly benevolent monarch, passed away in 2006.  He was an extraordinarily great man with his vision for modern Tonga. He was a big man with a big heart. He holds the Guinness record for the heaviest monarch in history. His passing was a tremendous loss to Tonga and Tongans. I understand that corruption has since crept into the administration leading to violence and riots in Tonga. Such events were unheard of in the history of Tonga. On his seventy-fifth birthday, the people of Tonga celebrated with prolonged festivities, traditional ceremonies and cultural events for several days.

The people

What does Tonga have that other countries do not have? Why do I call it a paradise on earth? The answer is: the people of Tonga. They are unique. Every year, numerous tourists visit Tonga. Tonga has almost no industries and the agriculture is mainly of a subsistence type. Most of the trade consists of goods imported by multi-national trading houses (e.g. Burns Philp & Morris Hedstrom). How does Tonga pay for all these imports without producing anything?  The answer is: partly through receipts from tourism but mainly out of remittances from Tongans living in America, Australia and New Zealand. Also, Tonga receives aid from Australia and New Zealand and many other countries regardless of their political affiliations.

A curiosity: the gold tooth

Anyone who has lived in Tonga has noticed that almost all the women have one gold tooth. This is not due to poor dental health! It is purely decorative! When a girl becomes a woman and decides that she has to decorate herself and has a gold ring or other ornament, she goes to a dental specialist asks him to melt down the ornament and use the gold to install a gold tooth! The gold tooth may also be a present from parents or elders on a girl’s graduating or securing employment.

A flower worn behind the ear

In Tonga as in the rest of Polynesia, a flower worn behind a person’s (especially a woman’s) ear has a special significance. It is both an ornament and a signal. It signals to the world that the wearer has been taken (married or affianced). Tongans meticulously heed the signal and avoid embarrassment to themselves and to others.

Raised eyebrows

When you ask a Tongan a question expecting ‘yes’ for an answer or when you make a statement inviting assent or agreement, you do not usually get a verbal response. Instead, the Tongan raises his eyebrows signifying ‘yes’ or assent or agreement. This is not peculiar to Tonga. I have come across this behavior in Tanzania where I lived for 13 years but this behaviour is rare in other parts of the world.

Smoking women

A large proportion of Tonga women are addicted to cigarette smoking although most Tonga women do not drink. Society seems to condone smoking in women unlike many other countries in the Orient.

Bread straight from the oven

Among the many pleasant memories that I have of life in Tonga is the Sunday queue for hot bread straight from the oven. Sitani Mafi was baker by appointment to the King and the Royal Family. He was exempted from the rule that Sunday should be observed as the sacred Sabbath and no industrial or commercial activity was permitted on Sunday. Late in the afternoon on Sunday, long queues would form in front of a special retail outlet at the bread factory and people would buy fresh bread and eat it without any spread or with ice-cream that was also sold at the same outlet! I can assure the reader that the bread tasted simply wonderful!

Tapa

No account of life in Tonga would be complete without a mention of Tapa. Thisis bark cloth made in the islands of the Pacific Ocean, primarily in Tonga, Samoa and Fiji, but as far afield as Java,  New Zealand, Vanuatu,  Papua New Guinea (particularly in Oro Province around Tufi) and Hawai’i (where it is called kapa).

As Tonga is the country where tapa is still a part of daily life, the following description is given for that country. Although on other islands the overall process is about the same, there still might be several smaller or larger differences.

In Tonga hiapo is the name given to the paper-mulberry tree. People have bunches of them growing in a corner of their plantations. They are cut and brought home where the first task is to strip the bark from the trees. The strips are about hand wide and person long. The wood so left over is named mokofute. The bark consists of 2 layers. In the next step the outer bark is to be scraped or split off from the inner bark. This work is called ha?alo. The outer bark is discarded, the innerbark, named tutu or loututu, is left over. It is first dried in the sun before being soaked.

After this, the bark is beaten on a wooden tutua anvil using wooden mallets called ike. In the beating the bark is made thinner and spread out to a width of about 25 cm. This phase of the work is called tutu (or tutua). The mallets are flat on one side and have coarse and fine grooves on the other sides. First the coarse sides are used, and towards the end of the work the flat side (t?-tu?a). The continuous “thonk” beats of the tapa mallet is still a normal sound in the Tongan villages. If several women work together they can make a concert out of it. In that case there might be one who tukipotu, beats the end of the tutua to set the rhythm.

When the strips are thin enough, several strips are taken together and beaten together into a large sheet. Some starch from the kumala, or manioke may be rubbed on places which are unwilling to stick. This part of the work is called ?opo?opo, the glue is called tou and the resulting sheet of tapa is called feta?aki. It then consists of two layers of strips in perpendicular direction, the upper one called lau?olunga and the lower one laulalo. A knife or sharp shell named mutu is used to trim the edges, and the pieces fallen off in this process are called papanaki. When the white feta?aki is smoked brown, it is called sala.

Often the women of a whole village work together on a huge sheet of tapa fabricated as a donation to the church or their chief at an important occasion. Such sheets are about 3 meters wide and 15, or 30, or sometimes even 60 meters long. The 15 meter pieces are called launima (meaning: five-sheet, because the sheet is 5 squares), and the 30 meter pieces are called lautefuhi.

Conclusion

Tonga was a paradise on earth to me as long as I lived there. If things have changed for the worse since my leaving Tonga, I do hope they will change again for the better and Tonga will remain the paradise on earth it used to be!

This article overlays the lessons outlined in Robert Fulghum’s book, “All I Really Need To Know I Learned In Kindergarten with the recent behavior and actions of the American political class. Unfortunately, the article concludes that our politicians did not learn much in kindergarten as they continue to prove ineffective in solving this nation’s problems or even behaving in a mature manner.

Tonga: A Paradise On Earth

Tonga is a tiny Polynesian country of big people with a population of about 100000 in the deepest part of the South Pacific. It is the last hereditary monarchy in the Pacific region. Managing Depression: the Role of Medication and Hope

Many people have suffered from Depression at some time or other in their lives. Depression may be triggered by any kind of event. Once it sets in, allopathic medication and hope are the only way out; alternative medicine like ayurveda and homeopathy are unsuitable. Counselling is a waste of time too. A relapse of depression in a person who has recovered through medication may occur due to stress caused by a sudden or drastic change in the environment.

On 23 October, 2001, Apple released the first ever iPod. It appeared after less than a year’s development, and was Apple’s response to what it saw as a gap in the personal digital market. Until this point, digital music players were too large to be practical or too small to work properly. Apple changed this situation overnight with a 5GB device of modest size that held up to a 1,000 songs.

The first iPod was white with a monochrome screen. Users navigated it with a mechanical scroll wheel and a centre button. Other features included a FireWire rather than a USB connection, and a battery that held a charge for about ten hours of music playback.

The iPod made its mark instantly. Although it was only compatible with Mac computers, Windows users employed third party software to get round this problem. It was clear Apple could fill the gap in the market that the company had identified.

iTunes
iTunes became available in January 2001, nine months before the first iPod. iTunes formed part of Apple’s iLife software, and enabled users to transfer the content of CDs to their Macs, organise the music, and play it through their computers. The arrival of the iPod, together with iTunes 2.0, meant that everyone could now go one step further and copy their music from computers to portable players.

Since iTunes 2.0, Apple has introduced regular iTunes updates. The iTunes Store came online in April 2003, and six months later iTunes 4.1 made iTunes compatible with Windows. Further developments include access to music videos; podcasts; audiobooks; films; TV programmes; games; and applications. Apple has complemented these improvements with features such as Album Artwork; Cover Flow; and, most recently, Genius.

Technology
The first iPod stored music on a hard drive, a medium that the iPod classic continues using to this day. iPod minis (January 2004 – September 2005) had one inch microdrives with either 4GB or 6GB capacities. The iPod nano, shuffle, and touch have always had flash memories.

Colour screens arrived with the fourth generation iPod, also known as the iPod photo, in October 2004. From June the following year, all iPods dropped the black and white screens and had colour displays. These developed further into the two inch, two and a half inch, and three and a half inch screens that are now part of the nano, classic, and touch respectively.

The iPod’s controls began with the mechanical scroll wheel. A touch-sensitive wheel, and then the Click Wheel, followed this. The third generation iPod, however, combined a wheel with four horizontal buttons beneath the screen from April 2003. Apple changed this layout to just a touch-sensitive wheel in July 2004.

The most significant departure from the wheel arrangement appears on the iPod touch. Released in September 2007, the iPod touch has a Multi-Touch screen that users tap and run their fingers across to control the iPod’s functions.

The Click Wheel remains, though, as one of the distinctive features of the iPod classic and iPod nano ranges. The iPod shuffle, first released in January 2005, has a five button arrangement in the shape of a circle.

Connectivity for iPods has also changed. To begin with, Apple maintained exclusive use of FireWire, the original connection for iPods. In April 2003, with the advent of the third generation iPod, Apple included USB connectivity for the first time. In September 2005, all iPod models became USB only. This move confirmed iPods as the leading portable music player, and reflected the need to link to all computers.

Storage capacity
Apple began the iPod range with 5GB of storage. Within six months, a 10GB model appeared, followed by a 20GB second generation iPod in July 2002. Storage capacity hit its peak in September 2007 with the 160GB model of the sixth generation iPod (the “classic”), although this has since been dropped. The highest capacity, with the potential to hold 30,000 songs or 150 hours of video on a 1.8 inch hard drive, is the current 120GB iPod classic.

The latest iPod shuffle offers 1GB and 2GB options for 240 or 500 songs. The nano has 8GB and 16GB, and the iPod touch gives you a choice of 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB. iPod owners also have the ability to store digital media in their iTunes libraries.

Windows
Windows users who bought first generation iPods had to obtain software such as XPlay because they couldn’t download iTunes. To ease this problem, Apple released two versions of second generation iPods in October 2002. One came with iTunes for Mac owners; the other had Musicmatch Jukebox for Windows users.

In October 2003, Apple launched iTunes for Windows, and from then on all iPods were suitable for Mac and Windows users. Today, iPods no longer come with iTunes: the software is available to everyone as a free download.

Video
One of the most significant boosts for iPods was the introduction of video. This came with the fifth generation iPod in October 2005. Originally available in 30GB and 60GB versions, the fifth generation was slimmer than its predecessor and with a larger screen.

Battery support for video playback was two hours for the 30GB model, and three hours for the 60GB. This jumped to six and half hours, however, with the arrival of the 80GB fifth generation upgrade in September 2006.

Video playback is now a standard feature on the iPod classic, the touch and the nano.

Sales
iPods are the most popular type of digital music player in the world. Their share of the market is more than 70%, and total sales have exceeded 160 million. Apple has sold around a quarter of this figure within the last year.

Situated in the South-West Pacific Ocean in the Australia Continent, Fiji is one of the most beautiful archipelagic destinations in the world. Officially the Republic of the Fiji Islands, Fiji is located to the north of the Tropic of Cancer, and is about 1850 miles east of Australia and about 1200 miles south of the Equator.

Further, via air, Fiji is about three hours from Brisbane and Auckland, about four hours from Sydney, and about ten hours from Los Angeles. Sprawling over an area of about 240000 square kilometers, Fiji is made up of more than 300 islands and more than 500 smaller islets, of which about only 100 is inhabited. Fiji’s two largest islands are Vitu Levu and northern Vanua Levu, both of which together occupies about 85% of the overall land mass.

Once served as a British colony for more than 100 years, Fiji has now become the hub of trade in the South Pacific as well as the prominent stopover for flights between the USA and New Zealand. With its incomparable sheer natural splendor and unspoiled serene environment comprising a variety of unique flora and fauna, glorious beaches, lush rain forests, coral islands, salubrious tropical climate, and sparkling waters, Fiji is truly a paradise for nature lovers. Above all, Fiji is much favored for its rich culture as well as the presence of amicable Fijian people.

Fiji Islands are highly famed as a romantic destination. Let it be for an enjoyable vacation or to celebrate honeymoon or wedding anniversary, or to indulge in an array of fun filled activities, Fiji is an ideal destination. The archipelago of Fiji has been categorized into three island groups such as the Central Islands covering the two major islands: Viti Levu and Vanua Levu; the Ra Islands, with islands such as the Yasawas and Mamanucas; and the Lau Islands.

As mentioned earlier, Viti Levu is the most prominent island in the country, and is home to the capital city, Suva. Boasting of highly sophisticated cities, verdant areas, dazzling waterfalls, and magnificent as well as secluded beaches, Viti Levu indeed has everything to make your vacation in Fiji memorable as well as fun filled.

Situated about 65 kilometers north of the Viti Levu, Vanua Levu is the most popular island in Fiji, after the Viti Levu. With such well maintained town as Savusavu and Labasa, Vanua Levu is a perfect destination for those interested in exploring the country’s indigenous life. If you are a nature lover or a traveler seeking peace and tranquility, then one of the most suitable options would be to take a tour to Taveuni, which is sometimes acknowledged as the Garden Island, due to its plentiful of magnificent, exotic flowers. Most popular among the attractions in this region are Lake Tagimaucia with a volcanic crater and Bouma Falls. Apart from these, Taveuni has to its credit some of the best diving spots in the world, such as, the Rainbow Reef and the Vuna Reef.

Popular island destinations in the country also include Kadavu, which is situated to the south of Viti Levu. Majority of its land mass is covered with rainforest, apart from several soaring mountains, beautiful waterfalls, and gorgeous beaches. It is also an area to spot some rare species of birds. Apart from these, Kadavu is home to one of the scuba diving resorts in the country, Great Astrolabe Reef.

Attractions in Fiji are not just confined to majestic volcanic mountains, secluded mountains, scintillating waterfalls, and stupendous beaches. But, it is beyond all these things. People touring Fiji can also come through a range of museums, art galleries, historic shrines and monuments, and cultural centers. For instance, the Fiji Museum in Suva is one of the not to miss attractions in Fiji.

On display here is an amazing collection of artifacts hat throw light on the interesting past of the region. A gallery housing prehistory-related items can also be found within the museum. Aside this, the museum provides opportunities for the visitors to take a ride in Vitian drua, a traditional type double hulled canoe.

Likewise, for devotees, Fiji has some superb options in the form of Sri Siva-Subramaniya Temple, which is in Nadi. The shrine is the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. Dedicated to the Lord Muruga, the temple is much famed for its exquisite architectural styles. Attractions in Fiji also include Orchid Island Fijian Cultural Centre in Suva and Suva Municipal Market, the South Pacific’s largest as well as liveliest market.

Additionally, Fiji is a mecca for water sport lovers, and provides opportunities to enjoy a range of attractions from scuba diving, swimming, and snorkeling to fishing, surfing, and sailing.

When comes to accommodation, Fiji boasts of some of the best choices in the world. Some of the most sophisticated hotels in the area come with excellent rooms replete with high end amenities such as air conditioning, comfortable beds, and superb bath area. There are also some resorts that provide services via packages covering accommodation, dining, and facilities to enjoy a myriad of water based as well as land based activities.

The Cook Islands are just northeast of New Zealand in the South Pacific Ocean. The islands control 2.2 million square kilometers of ocean and consist of fifteen major islands. The major islands are divided into two distinct groups: the Southern Cook Islands and the Northern Cook Islands. The Northern groups of islands are the oldest ones, but all of the islands were formed by volcanic activity. Any New Zealand travel would not be complete with out a visit to these majestic islands.

It is easy to fall in love with the Islands with their gorgeous white-sand beaches lined with palm trees, beautiful coral reefs and the most breath-taking lagoons you have ever seen. It truly is one of the most beautiful places in the world. The most defining thing about the Cook Islands is that there are no huge hotels, high-end resorts or overcrowded tourist attractions. It is unlike any other tropical vacation spot you can imagine which makes it the perfect retreat from your normal life. This is the best place to just kick back and relax and forget all of your everyday stressors.

All of the islands create a population of only 14,000 inhabitants and everyone knows one another by name. The community is very close and they like to create a living environment that is peaceful, relaxing and everyone enjoys one anothers company. As a vacationer, you will love the friendly nature of all the natives and will feel right at home among them. This type of atmosphere is what makes it so hard to ever leave there once you make the journey across the Pacific in your New Zealand travels.

While in the South Pacific, there are so many things to see and do. Not everyone wants to just simply relax for an entire vacation; the Islands can satisfy your adventurous side as well. Some things you must do on these beautiful beaches are: snorkeling, scuba diving, fishing in the beautiful aqua blue lagoons and hiking on the Island tracks of Rarotonga. The Cook Islands also offer some wonderful culture trips as well as golfing and bowling clubs on the island of Rarotonga. These Islands are ideal for any type of person, whether you are looking for the ultimate escape from your high stress, everyday life or for some adventure that you cannot find anywhere else. The Islands are a once in a lifetime chance to experience the South Pacific at its best. Planning a New Zealand travel vacation here for yourself or your entire family is an extraordinary opportunity for any traveler.

Top Deals & Destinations of the Week!

I would usually put this one last – but it is so good, I have to make sure all eyes see it. If anyone has tried to travel over the holidays, you know the prices can double/triple during our days off! However, Funjet is offering flights from 9, yes 9 roundtrip to the Caribbean during the Holiday season – and that is just the beginning of these amazing deals. Yes, I’m a total Caribbean bum. The warm salty air, the miles and miles of sand that give way to some of the most gorgeous turquoise water anywhere is enough motivation than I need. That image coupled with the fact that its now cheaper then ever before to go, makes the Caribbean the bonus destination this week! Fly into the Caribbean and stay for 3 nights during this Holiday Sale for 9 and you save 0 per person! You say you want added value? Alright, how about bring the kiddies along and they will stay, play and eat free! You have to love the Holidays!

Now that I got the holiday excitement out of the way, here are the best deals and destinations of the week!

Hawaii.  Although this might sound like an automatic for most people, it must fall on any list of places to go. Comprised of hundreds of islands spread over 1500 miles, the state of Hawaii has been a sod after spot for families, honeymooners and everyone else looking to enjoy its acclimate weather and its lush beaches, not to mention their bewildering gold, red, green and black sands. With breast cancer awareness month upon us, you can battle two issues with one preverbal stone.  You can visit the amazing island of Oahu for 5 nights including air for 9, while helping out a very important cause.  The “Travel Pink, Travel Oahu” makes donations to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure.  Travel during this time will save you close to 0; as oppose to traveling there during the high season.

Australia. Fall asleep on the plan and wake up in this beautiful and diverse English speaking country With its over 2.9 million square miles of land, this country is filled with history, underwater treasures and, for the nature lover, some of the most amazing creatures to ever roam the wild. If you’re a wine lover, or one that occasionally enjoys a nice glass, Australia, with its average temperature of 67F (19C), has some of the world’s best Chardonnay. Take a journey through the extraordinary history and architecture of the Iconic Sydney Opera House. With dimensions of 605 feet long and about 388 feet wide, this UNESCO World Heritage Site has held some of the most sought after venues in the world. Constructed in 3 stages, this structure holds 5 different venues that make up the main performance facilities; The Concert Hall, The Opera Theatre, The Drama Theatre, The Playhouse and the Studio. If Australia is your idea of a true getaway, and with all there is to experience you are not alone, then take advantage of this terrific offer. Air and a 6 night stay, with a tour of this amazing attraction is yours for 99. This rate is for travel from Los Angeles, usually with advertising if you are traveling from any where but the place they give you the price for, the price goes way up – but in this case, the reason this deal is so amazing and much more affordable than in the past, is because there is only a 0 flight add-on regardless of where your origin in the United States!

Affordable Cruising w/ Low Deposits. With the dollar these days, a lot of our dreams of visiting exotic destinations like Europe/South America/Alaska may be put off for years later, “when things get better”. However, the cruise lines are very aware of our economic situation and are making our way around the Globe more affordable. Princess Cruises, one of the most respected names in the Cruise industry has is offering rates as low as 6/nt. Pick a place on the globe, Denmark, Italy, Mexico, Brazil, Alaska and my personal favorite St. Petersburg, Russia are all well within your reach. Princess is offering a worldwide sale including coupon booklets for the cruise that will certainly save you money on board. The best part is if you want to plan ahead and reserve the space for 2009 plus take advantage of the deep discounts now, you only have to give a 0 deposit. If you have not cruised before, I can tell you the deposits are usually much higher! Plus they guarantee these low prices – so you don’t have to think that the price may get lower later. Many of the sailings are offering cabin upgrades and other amenities. A new look at an old way of spending your vacation is what you might be looking for, and Princess Cruises makes your search a little less congested.

Jamaica. As Jack Frost is getting ready to nip on your nose, what better way to fight back then heading to the Caribbean? The need for Hot Chocolate as an anti-freeze is absolutely not needed here; and proper footwear while on the beach is no required. I have been to Jamaica six times- I guess I like it there. Lately, I hear some negative talk, fear in some cities – however these are not the places the tourists frequent and the myths should be squashed. Jamaica has some of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen, and truly gives you that “island, I am way from it all” feeling. Jamaica is known for its all inclusives, where you never have to leave the resort except for a dip in the ocean and perhaps an excursion to hear some reggae. The deals to Jamaica – especially these all inclusive resorts are outstanding. One deal I found with Air Jamaica Vacations is with The Holiday Inn SunSpree Resort. Relax to the sounds of Calypso music for 3 magical nights at the All-Inclusive Montego Bay resort. That’s right; everything is included for your vacation. Not convinced yet of this great deal…well, how about round trip airfare, two checked bags free (can you believe that they are charging to your luggage!), transfers and use of land and water sports and entertainment. Also, flying Air Jamaica has been one of the best airline experiences I have ever had. Got kids? Bring them along with you. Not only do you save up to a whopping 60% off, your kids get to stay free! I’m sure that Mr. Frost will be waiting for you when you get back, but nothing like prolonging the inevitable!

Fiji.  Yes the South Pacific has been on my table of places to go for quite some time now. I have found deals to this side of the world, I never thought could exist. Go to sleep on the plane – wake up in paradise. The Republic of the Fiji Islands is an island nation in the South Pacific.  East of Vanuatu, west of Tonga and Tuvalu to the south, it occupies about 322 islands.  One spot in Fiji that I have paid close attention too is Nadi.  The third largest conurbation in Fiji, it is located on the western side of the main island. The scuba, snorkeling is outstanding — the color of the water is like no other, and the culture, interesting and colorful – yes, you are really on the other side of the world. You can take ferries to the Mamanuca Group of islands along with experiencing the mud-flat beaches.  Other exciting sites to take in are the Waqadra Botanical Gardens and the Sleeping Giant Gardens, which house Raymond Burr’s magnificent orchid collection.  If Europe and Hawaii have become the everyday talk as to where your vacation travels will lead you, this might be a nice change; and with prices starting at 9 per person including air to Nadi, you can start telling your friends “I’m finally going to the South Pacific!”

Add Additional Productivity To Your Company’s IT Development Team With Adobe Air Training

By: Wayne Hemrick

About the Author

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/Add Additional Productivity To Your Company’s IT Development Team With Adobe Air Training

In these tough economic times, every company is trying to make their IT budgets stretch as far as possible.  One of the best ways to do that is to invest in the knowledge base possessed by your IT team.  The more your current team of experts knows, the more productive and self-sufficient they can be.  For these reasons, it makes sense to utilize the professional Adobe Air training that is available from Adobe certified instructors.  This Adobe Air training can take place at the instructor’s state-of-the-art computer classroom.  Here your instructor has all the tools you will need in order to enhance your learning experience.  If it is more feasible for your IT team, your Adobe instructor can also come to you and work with you on-site for Adobe Air training.

A good learning experience with Adobe Air training for your IT team will be based upon a couple of different factors.  One is that your instructor is an expert with Adobe Air.  This you can easily determine by checking to see that they are certified by Adobe as an instructor.  Adobe instructors have been trained using a standards-based system, and your teacher will also offer to you the Adobe Authorized Curriculum.  Another is that you will also want an instructor that meets your specific on-the-job learning needs for Adobe Air training.  The best instructors also bring real-world experience to their teaching, and they understand the issues you face as you are trying to learn, so this will enable them to teach you more effectively.  Ultimately, your IT team will be prepared through the thorough Adobe Air training to become certified themselves, as a recognition of their proficiency with Adobe Air.

Adobe Air is a runtime engine.  Among many capabilities, it allows Adobe Flex to display web-like content on the desktop.  Adobe Air works with any computer and any operating system.  Adobe Air is also used to build rich Internet applications, which combine the best features of web-based and desktop-based applications.

When you sign up for Adobe Air training, you can expect to see several parts to that training.  They will usually include an introduction to Adobe Air and how to get started creating your own Adobe Air application and running it.  You should also receive instruction in how to create native windows, how to use the file system and connect applications.  Understanding Adobe Air security, as well as ways to customize the application deployment are topics that your certified instructor will go over over in your Adobe Air training.

Contact a certified Adobe Air instructor today for more details on Adobe Air training.

The Skin Miracle of the South Pacific

Have you ever heard of Tamanu oil? Don’t worry many haven’t, but this amazing skin product has some powerful properties, and smells like homemade pecan pie!

Tamanu oil boasts of anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and anti-oxidant properties. It has a soothing effect on the skin and can be used on mucous membranes. It also improves the skins elasticity and firmness. Tamanu oil can be used on scars, stretch marks and as pregnancy stretch mark prevention as it is completely natural. However, it is made from a nut so those with nut allergies should test it on their wrist before using. Other things that tamanu oil can be used for:

Sunburn Dry skin Rashes and allergies  Blemishes and acne Burns, cuts and wounds Psoriasis Dermatitis Rosacea Hemorrhoids

Tamanu oil comes from the plant species Calophyllum inophyllum. The tree is called many different things such as the “poon” in India, the “feta’u” in Tonga, the “bintangor” tree in Malaysia or the “ati” or “tamanu” tree in Tahiti. However this tree can be found in South East Asia, Australasia, Madagascar, East Africa, the Pacific Islands, the West Indes and South America. The tree is an evergreen hardwood which flowers twice a year and in time produces round fruit the size of an apricot. The fruit yields a large nut which is where the oil comes from. The nut is originally composed of whitish yellow kernel. The nut is then dried for a month or so and the kernel turns into greenish amber coloured oil. Tamanu oil be easily absorbed into the skin and has a rich nutty fragrance. Tamanu is an organically sustainable product as the trees themselves are not harvested and the nuts are quite plentiful. You can purchase Tamanu oil from www.pacifikaspirit.com or you can visit http://www.tamanuoil.co.uk/ for further information and pictures.
