Using Cheap Flights to Get to a Great Fiji Vacation

]]>

Paradise doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Cheap flights can take you the island paradise known as Fiji where visitors will enjoy a true island getaway. When you think of Fiji you think of white sand, cloudless skies and palm trees. And that is exactly what you find in Fiji.

A Tropical Getaway Dedicated To Tourism

Tourism is the top focus of the economy of Fiji, as is the case for most tropical islands. The best time to visit Fiji is generally between March and November. During this time the weather is almost always guaranteed to be warm and sunny. The “soft coral capital of the world” has been a mecca for tourism for decades. Yasawa Islands are the most popular of the nation’s islands, formed by volcanic activity over 150 million years ago. It is easy to see why Fiji is the most popular South Pacific tourist destination.

Best Fiji Islands For Cheap Flights

When looking for cheap flights to Fiji it helps to choose an island offering a wide selection of activities and accommodation. You can find a cheap flight and end up on an island with a limited choice of hotels and have to travel to other islands for the activities you want to enjoy. The end results is spending more on getting to do what you want to do once you are there.

If you choose an island that has all of the accommodation and activities you are interested in, you will get the most out of your vacation at a reasonable price. Denarau, 20-minutes from the Nadi International Airport, is the most popular destination among the Fiji islands. Visitors will find a fully-integrated resort area accessed by a brief walk or drive over a small bridge. Travelers will find numerous holiday activities including deep sea fishing, diving, swimming, a premier golf course and over 670 acres of beautifully landscaped tropical gardens.

Couples, Family And Group Deals

Fiji can be a great destination for couples, families or groups traveling on a business vacation. Another way to save money on flights to Fiji is to get a package deal. Some deals are especially made for couples or families. Group rates can be found for business travelers looking for a tropical retreat to get the creative juices flowing.

Explore The Culture, Save More

Avoiding the popular tourist destinations is another way when looking for cheap flights. Those looking to experience local flavor can find it on Viti Levu, home to the countries two major cities Suva and the port-town of Lautoka, the nation’s capital. Local tours are available and there are a number of dining and shopping choices to keep visitors occupied.

Cheap Flights Any Time Of Year

Those looking to get away for a Fiji vacation do not have to just settle for the off-season to find travel deals. Fiji has a tropical climate and moderate trade winds year round. The humidity is not really a factor. Temperatures remain fairly constant, only fluctuating about four degrees between summer and winter. April, May, June and October are the driest months in Fiji. Christmas tends to be the busiest travel time in Fiji, but cheap flights can be found out of most major cities any time of the year.

Online travel and airline websites are your best bet for a cheap flight to Fiji. In some cases the accommodation such as hotel and travel arrangements can be made fom there as well once there. It is best to plan ahead of time to get the best deal and best selection of travel dates. If you are planning to go to Fiji as part of a holiday you should plan at least 3-4 months in advance to get the best prices. The closer to the date, the less flexible prices are.

Fiji Travel information – What You Need To Know!

]]>

Fiji is located in the South Pacific approximately 4,450 km (2,775 mi) southwest of Honolulu and 1,770 km (1,100 mi) north of New Zealand. Flight time to Fiji is 10 hours from Los Angeles; four hours from Sydney; 3 hours from Auckland; and about six hours from Honolulu. A lot of airlines that travel to New Zealand and Australia stop over in Fiji, as it’s the busiest stopover port of all the many surrounding South Pacific Islands.

Visas

You must have a valid, ongoing or return airline ticket and your passport must be valid for six months beyond your intended stay. New Zealand and Australians don’t require visas, nor do visitors from most developed countries. However, be sure to check your country’s passport requirements well before arrival.

Weather and Climate

Fiji’s wet season is from November to April. Fiji has a mild average temperature of 25°C, however it can climb to 30+°C in summer from December until January, and then sink to 20°C in winter from July until August.

Best time to visit is the so-called Fijian winter or ‘dry season’, from May to October, with lower rainfall and humidity, milder temperatures and less risk of tropical cyclones. These 6 months make up the high season when airfare and accommodation costs are at their highest, peaking in June and July. In wet season it’s best to head to drier regions such as the Mamanuca and Yasawa island groups. December and January are busy, as they coincide with school holidays in Australia and New Zealand, and Fijians visiting relatives. November, February and March are low season, the best time to get deals on flights and accommodation.

Clothing requirements – Light weight and casual clothing, smart travellers pack open-toe shoes, tee-shirts, sarongs, loose dresses, skirts, shorts and shirts, umbrella or thin waterproof jacket, and one sweater.

General Information

Fiji provides some good shopping, in particular Nadi, Suva and Lautoka have plenty of gift shops. These range from duty free shops to cheap clothing and souvenirs.

Currency is the Fiji dollar. Notes are in denominations of F, F, F, F, F and F. Traveller’s cheques can be cashed in any Fiji bank, most hotels, and duty-free shops. ATM machines are in all towns.

Tipping- Tipping is not customary but a bit of bargaining is acceptable.

Food – supermarket food is more expensive than in New Zealand and Australia, but cheaper than you’ll pay at the resort! If you are self-catering at a holiday home rental, buy fresh local produce from a local farmers market. These open every day except Sunday and provide an opportunity to buy local crafts, fresh fruit, vegetables, breads, local made meals, shells, beads, necklaces and clothing.

Total Population – Around 900,000

Time Zone – – GMT/UTC +12.

Communication – official languages are English, Fijian, and Hindustani, with English the most common.

Religious views – Christianity 52.9%, Hinduism 38.1% and Islam 7.8%.

Medical – Visitors do not need vaccinations, and there are private doctors and hospitals in the main towns.

Safety – no poisonous spiders, nothing to be scared of out the water. The ocean has sharks and a poisonous docile snake, but overall nothing to worry about.

Police – The police are relaxed and appear when you need them to help you, or resolve issues.

Land transport – Fiji’s larger islands have extensive and inexpensive bus networks, a great way to mix with the locals. There are bus stops but you can often just hail buses, especially in rural areas. About 90% of Fiji’s 5100km of roads are on Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Both of these islands are fun to explore by car, 4WD or on motorcycles.

Electricity – 230V 50HzHz, plugs from New Zealand and Australia work.

Geography

Of the 300+ islands and 522 smaller islets, approximately 106 are permanently inhabited. The largest island is Viti Levu, with the two biggest metropolitan areas – Suva, the capital city and Lautoka. The second largest island, Vanua Levu, is 64 km to the north of Viti Levu and the two main towns there are Labasa and Savusavu.

Other islands include Taveuni and Kadavu, the Mamanuca Group, and Yasawa Group, the Lomaiviti Group and the distant Lau Group, seldom visited by tourists. The only major town on any of the smaller islands is Fiji’s former capital Levuka, located on the island of Ovalau.

What Lonely Planet Thinks

Lonely Planet said – “Fiji has been in the tourism business for decades and has proven a winning formula. Those that arrive with notions of cocktails on alabaster beaches are seldom disappointed. The underwater scenery is spectacular and some of the finest, and most accessible, dives in the Pacific can be found here. The Mamanuca and Yasawa islands are Fiji’s movie stars, dangled in front of the world as idyllic South Sea Edens – their reefs and cobalt blue waters providing cinematic eye candy for films such as Tom Hanks’ Cast Away and Brooke Shields’ vehicle to stardom, The Blue Lagoon.”

Nanuya Resort Yasawa Island Fiji Is An Elegant Small Beach Hotel

Edit Article |

]]>

Nanuya Resort Yasawa Island Fiji is situated on the Blue Lagoon, and we stayed there just after a week at the Octopus resort.

We thought Nanuva was one of the most elegant small beach hotels we have stayed in as far as the South Pacific is concerned.
What really impressed us during our stay was the small touches, such as the plug in insect repellents in the room, especially as we had left ours at home!!
Another thing we love are nice toiletries in our room, and we were not disappointed at Nanuya, as the bures were modern, well equipped with ensuite facilities, towels, in fact all you would expect from a good resort. This of course included towels for the beach, and free water, which you can get from the bar.

The resort had everything needed for a great vacation, starting with the open air restaurant, serving superb food, and big platefuls. Fiji is not noted for its cuisine, but the food at Nanuya is delicious, with a simple continental breakfast to start the day. The breakfast is included, and then the menu for lunch is always the same, but the food is so good, you’ll have no difficulty finding something you like every day. The dinner menu changes daily, and there is a good selection of starters and main courses for you to look forward to.

If you want to see photographs of the Nanuya Resort then go to http://www.worldwidevacationspots.com/articles/127/1/Nanuya-Resort-Yasawa-Island-Fiji–is-an-Elegant-Small-Beach-Hotel/Page1.html

The biggest drawback was the invasion of backpacking daytrippers, who arrived on the beach, took the sunbeds, used the internet, and generally turned one of the best elegant small beach hotels that is Nanuya into a rugby scrum. Fortunately this only happened once, and we were mercifully free from too many daytrippers.

The beach as you would expect is quite out of this world, everything a South pacific beach should be, with wonderful blue/turquoise/green shades, and it was possible to swim out a little way for some quite good snorkelling.

Nanuya Resort is very well staffed, by cheerful smiling helpful people, who were never too obtrusive.

We’d definitely visit again, but next time we’d use Turtle airways and fly, turning a four and a half hour transfer into 30 minutes, so well worth the money!!
Nanuya Resort gave us one of the best tropical beach vacations possible

Cruising Towards Adventure In Fiji

Edit Article |

]]>

Fiji has a very unique geography and is situated in the South Pacific Ocean. This country occupies an archipelago of over 300 islands, but only abut 100 of them are even inhabited. There are two major islands which account for 87% of the population, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. There are many new and exciting things to do in Fiji, but if you are planning a trip for the first time, you should definitely consider some Adventure cruises.

Adventure Cruises are an expedition trip of a lifetime and cannot be compared to anything else you can imagine. These travel experiences are brought to you through Active Fiji/Tui Tai Adventure Cruises and will provide you with the most unique Fiji experience possible. These excursions are designed for someone who seeks adventure and a wild ride while on a vacation.

First, there is Fiji Adventure, the Waterfalls and Walls package which takes you sea kayaking through closely spaced small coral islands, whitewater rafting through unbelievable rainforest canyons and snorkeling in beautiful, impeccable reefs. This is the perfect way to immerse yourself in all of the culture and beauty that Fiji has to offer. Tui Tai Adventure Cruises is a sea expedition that takes place aboard a 140 foot motorized sailing schooner called the A/S Tui Tai. The Tui Tai is a small ship with the elegance of large cruise ship. It consists of air conditioned cabins and staterooms to make you as comfortable as possible when having some downtime on your adventure. All of the rooms were renovated in 2006 to maintain its reputation as the premier expedition vessel in the South Pacific. The Tui Tai ship carries all its own equipment which includes, but is not limited to, kayaks, mountain bikes, snorkel gear, scuba gear and dive boats.

Arguably the most attractive thing about the Fiji Adventure Cruises is that they are a true Ecotourism which fosters partnership and development with native groups. This operation allows local villages to benefit economically as well. Funds, based on a percentage of the revenue from Fiji Adventures, are distributed to local villages to build new schools, buy medical supplies and fund any other community project that may be needed at that time.

The itinerary for the Fiji Adventures is jam packed with adventure and will never leave you without something to do. So, if you are someone who likes to think outside the box for a vacation idea or activity, then Cruise Adventures is the perfect solution.

If you fly directly east from northern Queensland for 2500 kilometres, you will be over Fiji. Looking down, you would see more than 800 islands – some large enough to hold thousands of people, others are very small. About 100 of these island are inhabited. If you flew down to 1323 metres while over the island of Viti Levu, you might hit the top of Tomanivi, Fiji’s highest peak. South-east of Tomanivi is Suva, the capital of Fiji. Main cities include Nadi, Sigatoka and Lautoka on Viti Levu and Labasa and Savusavu on Vanua Levu.

Fiji was populated for more than 3000 years before contact with white people. Most people living in Fiji had come from other islands in Melanesia, although some came from Polynesia and Micronesia. Villages developed their own traditions and language. Although the Dutch visited Fiji in the 1600s, regular visits from Europeans did not begin until traders and missionaries made contact with the Fijians in the early eighteenth century. This delay was partly due to the reputation of Fijians as ruthless cannibals.

In 1874, Fiji was declared a British colony. The British brought to Fiji many thousands of Indian labourers to work on the sugar cane. Indigenous Fijians resented so many non-Fijians settling in their land, and the British government introduced laws that banned non-Fijians from owning land. Fiji became an independent country on 10 October 1970 with a system of government based on that of Britain.

About 800 000 people live in Fiji. The nearest Australian city in size is Adelaide, with a population of 1050 000 people. Three-quarters of the population live on the island of Viti Levu. Indigenous Fijians make up about 50 per cent of the population, with Indian Fijians accounting for 45 percent. The remaining five per cent are of European or Chinese or people from other Pacific Islands.

Most Fijians live in rural areas, but the number of people migrating to the cities has increased. Life for indigenous Fijians in rural areas revolves around their village. Each village has a chief, who is usually a man. The way of life in the villages is communal, with everybody helping everyone else. Indigenous Fijians speak Fijian and English.

Indian Fijians speak Fijian Hindi and English. Although most Indian Fijian families have lived in Fiji for many generations, their culture remains similar to families in India. Women wear saris, and most marriages are organised by parents when their children are young.

Fiji, like Australia, has a high literacy rate. About 90 per cent of Fijians can read and write (in Australia, it is 98 per cent). However, unlike Australia, education is not compulsory in Fiji, but it is encouraged. The government pays for children to attend, school until year nine, then fees must be paid by students’ families. Most schools are run by religious or community organisations. Fiji also has the University of the South Pacific and the Fiji School of Medicine.

Most Fijians work on the land, and the main crops are sugar and coconuts. Fishing is a large part of Fiji’s agricultural sector. Gold mines also provide work and much-needed income for the country. Fiji’s most important industry is tourism, and many of Fiji’s tourists are Australian. In 1987 and 2000, military coups discouraged foreigners from visiting Fiji, which resulted in economic hardship.

Fiji’s major attractions are its natural attributes: the sea, the highlands and the islands. Most visitors to Fiji go to enjoy the beaches, with diving and snorkelling being popular pastimes. The Mamanuca group of islands, off the west coast of Viti Levu, have some of the country’s most beautiful beaches. The Abaca Cultural and Recreational Park, north-east of Nadi, contains waterfalls, rainforests and walking tracks that guide visitors through unimaginable beauty.

In 2000, George Spejght, an indigenous Fijian, led a coup against the Fijian Government. Speight and his followers kept Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry and other Politicians captive for more than three weeks before releasing them and forming their own government. Chaudhry is of Indian Fijian descent. Speight claimed he was representing indigenous Fijians who did not want Indian Fijians to have political rights. Speight was arrested, and power was given to a newly elected president.

In our lifetimes we hopefully spend more on our travel wants and needs than on any other professional or expert in their chosen fields such as lawyers, accountants, plumbers, electricians, builders, dentists, doctors and we certainly choose them very carefully, so why not use the same quality control when choosing a travel agent. Also, as with our other experts, there may be different agents needed for different destinations and activities, so do not necessariy stay with one agent for all of your travel requirements unless of course the agency has different experts for different products and services.

Surfing – riding the waves

Man has always enjoyed grappling with and subduing the forces of nature. In most cases, such an encounter with the full force of rampaging nature leads to total destruction and chaos for humans, such as in the case of hurricanes and tsunamis. In some cases however, man has actually been able to control nature and use it for his own enjoyment and recreation; the prime example of this being surfing.

The award-winning, five-star Jean-Michel Cousteau Fiji Islands Resort is one of the most renowned vacation destinations in the South Pacific. Located on the island of Vanua Levu on 17 acres of a coconut plantation, the accommodations overlook the peaceful waters of Savusavu Bay. The acclaimed resort is an international favorite for romance, honeymoons and weddings; scuba diving; and families, who want to combine heavenly surroundings and exceptional dining with an unsurpassed range of eco-friendly activities.

Jean-Michel Cousteau Fiji Islands resort is the only resort that employs a full-time marine biologist to help visitors appreciate the underwater world of Fiji.

The Jean-Michel Cousteau Fiji Islands Resort is an island resort, which means there are no televisions, phones, wireless internet access, etc.

If you need these things to have a great vacation then choose another resort.

On the other hand if you are happy in the company of friends and the wonderful people of Fiji, then this is the place for you.

The layout and the accommodation at the resort were both upscale and luxurious, much better than the photographs led us to believe.

We stayed in a garden bure, which was 30ft behind the Beach-front bure. The bure was large and breezy with an overhead fan. If you need air conditioning then you are in the wrong resort!! You will find a number of bug repellents in the bure, and you will need them for there is a mosquito problem.

The bathroom was quite spacious and well supplied with thick towels. There was a mini-bar and all sorts of drinks that were replenished daily. There were also a coffee and tea makers with different varieties of tea.

I’d opt for a Garden Bure, if only because there isn’t much of a beach at the beachfront, and it is a lot windier.

If you’re into beaches then go somewhere else.

The beach is poor, in fact all you will find are rock pools and mangroves, and significantly the small beach there is did not have any sunbathers on it. It is more of a sandy strip full of shells that leads into a coral tide area. This tide pools are great for studying local wild life. The best entry into the water is from the pier.

The staff were some of the best I’ve encountered and everyone was very friendly and accommodating.

The food was exquisite and gourmet with lots of fresh fish, probably best described as light island fare.

One could order a second helping of anything.

Everyday brought a new menu both at lunch and dinner.

There is a good wine list, but the wines by the glass were not so good.

There was a wide choice at breakfast.

There are two major shortfalls here, apart from the lack of beach in a Pacific Ocean Island paradise!!

The facilities for small children are superb, with the all encompassing Bula Club, however if your children are slightly older but not old enough to scuba dive, there are all sorts of rules and regulations for them to keep them out of adult vision and hearing.

The Children’s food was somewhat of the fast food variety, and I found it intolerable that children could not use the adult salt water pool at certain times.

In addition the scuba diving was not all it might have been.

Finally – beware falling coconuts, you will be asked to sign a waiver clause in case you get hit!!
