One Of The Best Tropical Beach Locations Is The Sandy Beach Resort Tonga Islands

]]>

It is situated on Foa Island, Ha’apai Group, and can be reached from the international airport on Tongatapu in 35 minutes followed by a ten minute car ride.

That in actual point of fact is the theory, but it doesn’t always work that way, but the owner meets you at the airport, so if you are even several hours later than expected, don’t worry.

Life at Sandy Beach Resort has its own timetable, and things do happen slowly in the South Pacific, but we didn’t go there for 21st century facilities.

We wanted an escape from the cocoon that 5* hotels have become, increasingly the same, no matter where in the world you have travelled to. What you will find at the Sandy Beach Resort is no pollution, no blaring radios, TV, or for that matter people!!

Boris and his father will look after you very well indeed, and the food in the restaurant is good if a little repetitive, in that it is mainly seafood based, although it suited us fine. You need to remember that there isn’t much agriculture on Tonga, and corned beef appears to be a staple!!

Life here is different, things don’t turn up, like aeroplanes, supplies, so just chill!!

The beach, which is almost on the doorstep of your fale, [chalet, bure ] are whatever you want to call it, is quite the most beautiful beach we have ever seen anywhere. It is very private here, indeed you could walk a few yards and never see another soul.

The water is the kind of turquoise colour you can only dream about, and you can snorkel almost off the beach, and see beautiful fish. Neither of us scuba dive, but I gather that was pretty good if you did.

This a real south pacific vacation. You do get one of the best white beaches, in fact one of the worlds best beaches, what you don’t get is an international hotel and five star service, but who wants it anyway.

Fiji Islands is perhaps the most popular tourist spot in the South Pacific. Situated in the South West Pacific and located about 3000 kilometers east of Australia and about 2000 kilometers south of the Equator, the archipelagic nation of Fiji is made up of more than 300 islands as well as about 500 islets. Each of the islands in Fiji is noted for its magical landscape comprising stupendous beaches, isolated beaches, rugged highlands, magnificent coral reefs, cool warm waters, astounding marine life, lush rain forest areas, and scenic cocoa and sugarcane plantations.

Further, Fiji is noted for its ethnicity, and is home to a unique culture, which in turn is an interesting mix of Polynesian, Melanesian, Micronesian, European, Indian, and Chinese cultures. Once referred to as the ‘Cannibal Isles,’ Fiji has now become one of the friendliest destinations in the world, which welcome people from across the world with open arms and beautiful smiles. In short, Fiji is truly an island paradise, offering a range of options to cater to all types of visitors, no matter you are honeymooners, family vacationers, or lovers who are here to celebrate such special occasions as Valentines Day.

Sprawling over an area of about 10500 square kilometers, Viti Levu is the largest as well as the most populous of all islands in Fiji. Beautiful cities, incredible resorts, tropical mountains, meandering rivers, scintillating waterfalls, traditional villages, and best dive sites- all sum up the island of Viti Levu.

In addition, it is also home to the capital city of Suva. The political as well as the commercial center of the Fiji Islands, Suva boasts of attractions such as Fiji Museum, which has some interesting artifacts; the Government House, which once served as the residence of colonial governors and presently the residence of the president of Fiji; Fiji Spice Gardens, where a range of spices can be seen such as cardamom, nutmeg, and vanilla; Colo-I-Suva Forest Park, a beautiful forest park; and Thurston Gardens – the nation’s first botanical garden.

Situated about 70 kilometers north of the Viti Levu is another much popular island in the Fiji, namely, Vanua Levu. This island provides great opportunity to experience the real life of the Fijians. Among the prominent town in the island are Labasa, which is on the north coast and Savusavu to the south.

Popular spots in Fiji also include Taveuni, which is alternatively known as the Garden Island, due to aplenty of exotic as well as colorful tropical flowers and plants. Just few among many of the attractions in the island is Bouma National Heritage Park, whose highlight is the Bouma falls; Lavena Nature Reserve, where you can see some of the most magnificent waterfalls as well as pristine rainforests of Fiji; Waitavala Waterslide, which is a great destination for seeking fun.

Des Voeux Peak, providing spectacular views; and Lake Tagimoucia, which is a crater lake at the center of Taveuni. In addition, Taveuni is also a popular spot for an active vacation, with superb options to enjoy an array of activities such as bird watching, snorkelling, and scuba diving, boasting of options including the Rainbow Reef and Vuna Reef.

A trip to Fiji would not be complete without taking a tour to Kadavu, which is located to the south of the main island of Viti Levu. Majority of this island is covered by rainforests, and contains several towering mountains, beautiful waterfalls, and incredible beaches. The key attraction of Kadavu is undoubtedly its pristine natural beauty. Among the highlights of the island are Daku Beach, Waisalima Beach, Great Astrolabe Reef, and Vunisea. Further, a range of activities can be enjoyed here, such as, scuba diving, kayaking, trekking, bird watching, and surfing.

Other not to miss attractions in Fiji are Lautoka, which is renowned for its sugarcane cultivations, and Nadi – a religious center whose focal point is Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple, which is the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere.

In short, Fiji Islands has everything to make your vacation enjoyable as well as memorable. It is therefore not a wonder why people from every nook and corner of the world visit here. Hence, Fiji has all types of accommodation options to cater to the growing number of tourists touring the place.

From upscale resorts and high-end hotels to boutique accommodations to budget resorts, accommodation options available in Fiji are truly endless. Some of the most sophisticated hotels in the destinations come with rooms coupled with leading edge amenities and facilities. Likewise, there are also hotels providing excellent value packages for celebrating such special occasions as Valentines Day, wedding anniversaries, and honeymoons.

Costa Rica lies between Panama and Nicaragua and it is bordered by the Caribbean Sea to the east and the North Pacific Ocean to the west. It is comprised of 51,100 square kilometers and the territorial waters take up about 589 square kilometers. The beaches extend to more than 1100 miles of sheer beauty with the Pacific Ocean on the western side and the Caribbean Sea on the eastern side.

At the Costa Rican beaches you can engage yourself in various kinds of activities. Among the numerous activities you can spend time in snorkeling, scuba diving, yachting, kayaking, surfing, water-skiing, deep-sea fishing, sports fishing, diving, swimming and many such water sports.

Surfing is perhaps the most popular activity. The Playa Avellana, Nicoya Peninsula’s Playa Santa Teresa, Santa Rosa National Park’s Playa Naranjo, Playa Negra, Playa Hermosa, Playa Grande, Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, Dominical and Playa Pavones are considered as the best options among the Costa Rica beaches for surfing with regards to the breaks and swells.

Fishing in this country, is also a popular most satisfying water sport. Costa Rica has a vast resource of fish in its huge stretches of lakes, seas and ocean. Be it deep sea fishing or fresh water fishing, Costa Rica has it all. Due to the large scale in which fishing is carried out there are several formal units of Costa Rica fishing. There is a wide variety of fish that are available, like the Sailfish, Wahoo, Billfish, Roosterfish, Marlin, Dolphins, Tuna, Cubera, Snapper, Blue runners, Snook and various other unusual fish. One can fish in various places with a lot of success.

The primary center for fishing is the stretch between Gulf of Papagayo Flamingo Beach and Cabo Blanca that has a complete marina option.

Popular ports of the Pacific area that is used for fishing are Flamingo, Carrillo, Coco, Ocotal, Tamarindo, Golfito, Dominical, Punta Leona, Puntarenas, Zancudo, Quepos and Manuel Antonio, Drake Bay, Zancudo and Tambor.

Another popular area for fishing in the Central Pacific region is the stretch between Drake Bay Quepos and Cabo Blanco.

Golfito is probably the major juncture for fishing in the South Pacific region with two developed marinas.

The lodges that let you experience great fishing at the Caribbean are situated in Parismina, Barra del Colorado and Tortuguero.

In Costa Rica you can also enjoy Diving and Scuba Diving. Little discovered, and still uncrowded, Scuba divers travel here from all parts of the world to see thousands of hammerhead sharks and enormous schools of innumerable fish in our tropical, plankton rich water. The waters offshore also teem with marine life.

You can dive in calm transparent waters on the Caribbean coast or opt for the wilder and more spectacular Pacific side. Most good diving is on the Pacific side. The Caribbean reefs were decimated some years ago due to pesticide runoff from the banana plantations although the last two or three years have seen a definite return of life to the region. The best months are in September-November.

There are three main areas for diving on the Pacific Ocean side. The first area is Isla del Cano, located on the Osa Peninsula in southern Costa Rica. The other two lie in the northern province of Guanacaste.

Canoeing and kayaking is one of best low impact ways to enjoy this amazing area and sea kayak and canoe tours are designed with an educative emphasis that seeks to assure preservation of the environment for years to come. The warm, rushing rivers which sweep through Costa Rica’s lush countryside offer world class white water rafting and kayaking opportunities. Rafting enthusiasts from around the world try their skills against these wild and turbulent rivers.

River Rafting is also great. If you’re trying river rafting for the first time, there are gentle rapids and lovely places to just float through. Whichever type of experience you have, you will be paddling through prime nature viewing areas, and so you will likely see otters, herons, parrots and iguanas too.

Most of the rivers in Costa Rica flow towards the Caribbean. After a heavy rain they come to life, going from being a reasonable river to become a place to enjoy the best whitewater rafting. The waters of these rivers are fairly warm so you are not at all uncomfortable unless you are nervous about trying Costa Rica rafting. Experienced water goers can also try their hand at kayaking the rivers as well.

Boating in Costa Rica is the ultimate experience. There are several boat trips that are well worth doing and are perhaps the most interesting way to get from one region to another. Traveling by boat across the eastern end of Lake Arenal is expensive, but by far the fastest and most beautiful way to travel between Arenal and Monteverde. There is a fascinating four-hour boat trip from Puerto Viejo on the Sarapiqui River into Nicaragua on the San Juan and on the Tortuguero. The boat trip from Cano Blanco to Tortuguero is also worth doing.

This a small list of the water fum you can have in Costa Rica. A country blessed with beautiful beaches, tropical waters and peacefull energy, has a lot to offer, especially for the water sports lovers!

]]>

Hilary Clinton, through her untiring efforts and fortitude, has become an icon for women to enter the higher echelons of politics in the United States.

It is evident that the battle for Vice-President could well be fought in the female arena.

Long has it been said that that ‘the female hand that rocks the cradle rocks the nation’. Once again this may be proven to be true in the 21st Century political arena. More and more women are mobilizing in favor for female candidates in the USA presidential election.

According to political writer Douglas Drenkow, for Obama to succeed in the polls, he should consider electing a woman for Vice-President. This should lessen the impact should McCain choose to follow suit.

A world apart, the South Pacific Island Paradise of Vanuatu, is undeterred by the 21st Century trends.

One time voted in 2006 as the “Happiest Country on the Earth”. This small tropical island thrives on a heavily male dominant society, whereby it is a rarity for women to acquire the high rankings of chiefly, or political status.

The Shepherds group is a small group of islands in Vanuatu archipelago of 83, that acknowledges the female acquisition of chiefly status through the matrilineal lineage system, either by birth or matrimonial rights.

Therefore, the unprecedented move by the Vanuatu Council of Chiefs to acknowledge the late Grace Molisa, from the island of Ambae as a personage of high status in the cultural and political arena has elevated women high up the cultural and political ladder, is a stepping stone for women entering into the political sphere.

The only other woman to receive high chiefly status, from Paul Tahi, the Chairman to the Vanuatu National Council of Chiefs, is Ms Jenny Ligo from Ambae. Jenny is the niece of the late Grace Molisa.

As former CEO of the Vanuatu National Council of Women, Jenny was, in 2007, bestowed this prestigious status after performing a grueling pig clubbing ceremony, to commemorate her marriage to her husband, Joe Ligo. Jenny had to club eleven pigs to their death.

Jenny is the South Pacific mirror of the Hilary Clinton legacy. Not only does Ms Ligo have the support of the Chiefs, but Ambaean women are mobilizing for her candidature in the upcoming Vanuatu general election. This came only after Jenny ceremoniously clubbed another eleven pigs to their death, in order to have the right to enter the arena of politics.

Voted the “Happiest Country on the Earth” in 2006, Vanuatu people with their deep cultural and traditional societies rely on three basic elements to ensure healthy living. Namely, Romance, Adventure and the sense of Security in their Freedom of Choice.

Romance and Adventure are the easiest achievable elements, in the ‘must see’ travel adventure destination of Vanuatu. Yet there is uncertainty in the lives of today’s younger female generation with regards to the Security of Freedom of Choice.

Free education is but a dream in Vanuatu and in the absence of a government social welfare program, what little money is generated, is invested in educating the boys.

The harsh reality is, a woman’s destiny lies in her own hands. Etched deep within, is their rich cultural norms and value, yet a vast majority lack any form of qualification.

As islanders living under per day, young girls miss out on the precious opportunity to become educated. As peer pressure of the 21st Century escalates around them, young girls may find themselves in a life scarring situation. This was the case recently, when a 16 year old girl was attacked by two youths, as she was walking home from work.

The Vanuatu Labor Law prohibits underage employments. Without proper education most rural communities are ignorant of the legal ramifications.

Younger generations are demanding the right to an education and to prove that they too can become future leaders of their Lesser Developed Country. Vanuatu has one of the fastest growing birth rates in the South Pacific.

The statistics have changes little since 1999. The government admitted in late 2007 that it does not have the finances to provide free education for the country.

The terrifying consequences of this are:

· only 55.8% of Vanuatu kids will get to grade 6

· of those only 18.2% will go to high school

· 26% will never go to school at all.

YouMe Support Foundation is one of the few charities raising funds for these educationally challenged youths. This Child Trust Fund provides non-repayable high school education grants to the children of the Outer Islands. Children who will never have the opportunity to see the inside of a high school classroom.

Through her courageous performance of the pig clubbing ceremony and the acquisition of a recognized prestigious status, Jenny Ligo has become the icon of change in the lives of these far flung communities.

You can find out more about these beautiful people and this fascinating Happiest Country on Earth. You too can make a difference in their lives, through a Blue Moon Opportunity.

Through a combined effort, young girls will be safely educated and given the opportunity to take their rightful place in their emerging world.

The Happiest Country on Earth, in the South Pacific, has a Special Role for Pigs in the Local Genera

In the United States, Hilary Clinton is the woman pioneer of the 21st Century. Ms Clinton has paved the way for women to enter the higher echelons of the political arena. Battle for Vice-President could well be fought in the female arena.
The female hand rocks the nation. Once again this may be proven to be true in the 21st Century political arena, where more and more women are mobilizing behind female candidates.

Situated in the South-West Pacific Ocean in the Australia Continent, Fiji is one of the most beautiful archipelagic destinations in the world. Officially the Republic of the Fiji Islands, Fiji is located to the north of the Tropic of Cancer, and is about 1850 miles east of Australia and about 1200 miles south of the Equator.

Further, via air, Fiji is about three hours from Brisbane and Auckland, about four hours from Sydney, and about ten hours from Los Angeles. Sprawling over an area of about 240000 square kilometers, Fiji is made up of more than 300 islands and more than 500 smaller islets, of which about only 100 is inhabited. Fiji’s two largest islands are Vitu Levu and northern Vanua Levu, both of which together occupies about 85% of the overall land mass.

Once served as a British colony for more than 100 years, Fiji has now become the hub of trade in the South Pacific as well as the prominent stopover for flights between the USA and New Zealand. With its incomparable sheer natural splendor and unspoiled serene environment comprising a variety of unique flora and fauna, glorious beaches, lush rain forests, coral islands, salubrious tropical climate, and sparkling waters, Fiji is truly a paradise for nature lovers. Above all, Fiji is much favored for its rich culture as well as the presence of amicable Fijian people.

Fiji Islands are highly famed as a romantic destination. Let it be for an enjoyable vacation or to celebrate honeymoon or wedding anniversary, or to indulge in an array of fun filled activities, Fiji is an ideal destination. The archipelago of Fiji has been categorized into three island groups such as the Central Islands covering the two major islands: Viti Levu and Vanua Levu; the Ra Islands, with islands such as the Yasawas and Mamanucas; and the Lau Islands.

As mentioned earlier, Viti Levu is the most prominent island in the country, and is home to the capital city, Suva. Boasting of highly sophisticated cities, verdant areas, dazzling waterfalls, and magnificent as well as secluded beaches, Viti Levu indeed has everything to make your vacation in Fiji memorable as well as fun filled.

Situated about 65 kilometers north of the Viti Levu, Vanua Levu is the most popular island in Fiji, after the Viti Levu. With such well maintained town as Savusavu and Labasa, Vanua Levu is a perfect destination for those interested in exploring the country’s indigenous life. If you are a nature lover or a traveler seeking peace and tranquility, then one of the most suitable options would be to take a tour to Taveuni, which is sometimes acknowledged as the Garden Island, due to its plentiful of magnificent, exotic flowers. Most popular among the attractions in this region are Lake Tagimaucia with a volcanic crater and Bouma Falls. Apart from these, Taveuni has to its credit some of the best diving spots in the world, such as, the Rainbow Reef and the Vuna Reef.

Popular island destinations in the country also include Kadavu, which is situated to the south of Viti Levu. Majority of its land mass is covered with rainforest, apart from several soaring mountains, beautiful waterfalls, and gorgeous beaches. It is also an area to spot some rare species of birds. Apart from these, Kadavu is home to one of the scuba diving resorts in the country, Great Astrolabe Reef.

Attractions in Fiji are not just confined to majestic volcanic mountains, secluded mountains, scintillating waterfalls, and stupendous beaches. But, it is beyond all these things. People touring Fiji can also come through a range of museums, art galleries, historic shrines and monuments, and cultural centers. For instance, the Fiji Museum in Suva is one of the not to miss attractions in Fiji.

On display here is an amazing collection of artifacts hat throw light on the interesting past of the region. A gallery housing prehistory-related items can also be found within the museum. Aside this, the museum provides opportunities for the visitors to take a ride in Vitian drua, a traditional type double hulled canoe.

Likewise, for devotees, Fiji has some superb options in the form of Sri Siva-Subramaniya Temple, which is in Nadi. The shrine is the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. Dedicated to the Lord Muruga, the temple is much famed for its exquisite architectural styles. Attractions in Fiji also include Orchid Island Fijian Cultural Centre in Suva and Suva Municipal Market, the South Pacific’s largest as well as liveliest market.

Additionally, Fiji is a mecca for water sport lovers, and provides opportunities to enjoy a range of attractions from scuba diving, swimming, and snorkeling to fishing, surfing, and sailing.

When comes to accommodation, Fiji boasts of some of the best choices in the world. Some of the most sophisticated hotels in the area come with excellent rooms replete with high end amenities such as air conditioning, comfortable beds, and superb bath area. There are also some resorts that provide services via packages covering accommodation, dining, and facilities to enjoy a myriad of water based as well as land based activities.

What Other Secrets Remain Hidden in the Tropical Island Jewel, Vanuatu?

Vanuatu with its 83 pristine tropical islands is the birth place of Extreme Sport. The Pentecost land dive was born in the mists of time in Vanuatu.

Vanuatu was also the inspiration for the book by James A Michener, which in turn inspired the classic musical Rodgers and Hammerstein’s 1958 film South Pacific. The Television version of the original classic, in 2001, never really found favor with the viewing public.

In 2006, the tiny archipelago South Pacific nation of Vanuatu, made famous by A Michener’s ‘Tales of the South Pacific’, was voted the Happiest Country on Earth by the British New Economics Foundation’s (NEF), Happy Planet Index according to Adrienne Wilson, writing for Gadling.com.

Recently the grave of the last Paramount Chief of Vanuatu, Chief Roi Mata, was granted the status of a world heritage site. It is said more than 20 wives and some of his men were buried live with the king. In the outer islands men drink a local calming drink, kava, which the women were not permitted. It’s believed that the men drank Kava before being buried alive with their king.

Vanuatu is also setting the world on edge, with its recent release of unique and traditionally well hidden art. Recent exhibitions from the northern island of Ambrym have received critical acclaim with reviewers saying the figurines could easily be mistaken for contemporary works of art. Collectors and critics are in a spin over the carvings, never before seen outside Vanuatu.

There is nothing like it in the museums of Europe and America. Only one similar piece has been found in a museum in Britain.

A towering four or five headed slit wooden gong from Ambrym, is one of the largest free standing musical instruments in the world. They are so commonly used as decoration in Vanuatu; they are rarely noticed by visitors.

Most people admiring the gongs, sometimes up to four meters high have no understanding of the connection to the secrets of Vanuatu society.

The stylized form of the wooden gong symbolizes the people’s ancestors. The eyes representing the morning star of a society which has traditionally kept its secrets well hidden from the rest of the world.

The gongs were a vital part of sacred ceremonies, such as funerals, initiations and dances. Carefully coordinated actions by multiple drummers, beat the lip of the gongs with a small wooden club. The informal village orchestras performed rhythmical ensembles of immense variety and complexity.

The gongs were also used as a form of bush telegraph to communicate between neighbouring villages. The use of a unique gong language allowed the villagers to send complex messages over long distances and sometimes if the atmospherics were right, messages could be sent to neighbouring islands.

Many tourists to these tropical islands carry home hand carved smaller samples of the large musical instrument as a memento although most are totally unaware of their deep cultural significance.

By releasing some of their secret and sacred artifacts to the world, the Chiefs of Vanuatu hope to bring about a renewed awareness of their ancient culture. They are aware that education of the younger generation is the only way to preserve their ancient ways. Very few young people have any knowledge of the art of the intricate language of the gong.

Hopefully the sharing of their secrets will bring about the desperately needed change in the education of the next generation of this tiny South Pacific archipelago.

Although Vanuatu has a deep and rich cultural heritage, there is a desperate need for formal education, if the younger generation is to take its rightful place in the 21st century.

As a lesser developed country where there is no free education, the government freely admits it is unable to meet the educational needs of the country.

• 26% of the children will never go to school.

• 18% will never go to high school.

• Only 56% will go over year 6

Although it is called the Happiest Country on Earth, many villagers still struggle to survive on under a day. Paying school fees is totally out of the question and many of the high achieving students will be condemned to finish study at the end of primary school. Many gifted and highly intelligent students will never have the chance to see the inside of a high school classroom.

It was once quoted: ‘If you refuse to build schools you will have to build jails.’ What a strange tragedy if the Happiest Country on Earth went this way.

Why Are Tropical Honeymoon Destinations in the South Pacific So Very Popular Now?

As people in general become more stressed in a society that focuses so much on being financially successful, the option of opting out of it all becomes highly desirable. Just using the imagination of putting oneself on to an island with sunshine, sea breezes, tropical palms swinging in the gentle zephyrs aloft – all conjours up a scene so inviting and desirable that people are prepared to knuckle down to the demands of the system we live in and work hard to achieve things that otherwise would not be possible. So when one is getting married, a tropical honeymoon destination in the South Pacific is grabbed with both hands.

There are not many people who would not agree that this would represent a dream honeymoon, but due to the constraints of finance, it is not always possible to live the dream or to make it a reality. However there are many locations where it does not cost a fortune to have an amazing holiday – little chalets inland which are surrounded by lush tropical planting may not be the absolute beachfront location, but are often very close to the beach, and still provide a getaway which is what a honeymoon is all about. These often have very interesting aspects which make holidays in them very appealing as a tropical honeymoon destination in the South Pacific.

While there are many islands in the Pacific, most people tend to stick to the more well known ones such as Fiji, The Cook Islands, Samoa, Tonga – especially the outer islands in the northern group of Vava’u which have amazing beauty and are very unpopulated and unspoiled with clear waters of deep turquoise and where a vacation on either on a skippered or bareboat yacht is offered, not a sound to be heard when cruising under a sail into a sheltered anchorage. Truly a tropical honeymoon destination in the South Pacific that becomes amazingly appealing to those who are boat lovers and enjoy cruising.

Of course the islands do also provide a standard which is now becoming increasingly popular in latter years and that is 5 star accommodation. This is a market that is steadily growing and which people are more than happy to save up for so they can enjoy a special location for a special occasion. There are 5 star resorts in all of the main centres in the Pacific region. Increasingly popular are the self contained small boutique villa properties where a hotel standard of service is offered, but guests have the option of using not only the lagoon as their swimming spot, but also a private swimming pool in their own villa courtyard. This provides a real getaway situation for couples wanting to escape the masses when on holiday. What could provide a better option for a tropical honeymoon destination in the South Pacific paradises?

Tropical Islands of the South Pacific Ripped Off

Life has continued for thousands of years, in a simplistic form, in the tropical islands of the South Pacific. Culture and tradition have been the rule of the village, where the people live very much hand to mouth, as the necessity arises.

However, these ancient indigenous communities are not protected from the abuse of International Property Rights, in the ever expanding cut throat scene of global commerce. The only way to stop the highway robbery is to look urgently and seriously to the educational needs of the next generation.

The very simplistic way of life of these people has preserved unique pockets of areas, untouched by modern civilization, that are a unique experience for the tourist  and a delight to the scientist.

A library of genetic markers, which will be used as a unique resource for ecologists and evolutionary biologists around the world, is currently being produced through an ambitious research program, on the picturesque tropical island of French Polynesia. It is a combined program between a United States Californian university and a French research institute.

Once such projects turn into profit, it is usually very little profit that finds its way down to the islanders, whose homes have been violated. One has only to look at the large diamond fields of the world to ascertain this.

Co-editor of the book, ‘Pacific Genes and Life Patents’, speaks of a high profile situation  where medical anthropologist, Carol Jenkins, who allegedly stole leukemia curing genes from the Hagahai people in the highlands of Papua New Guinea. The United States, through its National Health Institute, patented the DNA cells, stamping ownership, without permission, upon something that belonged to a group of people and their unborn generations, with little recompense to the local people.

Neither the individuals, their communities, nor their government were informed of the project. When the Hagahai people objected, the US government said their claims were inconsequential.

The question, which is as old as commerce itself, is who should gain from the benefits of such projects? The company who found and researched the product, or the original owners of the source of the raw material?

History proves that such projects have not shown any kindness to Pacific islanders.

Mead says the indigenous people of the Pacific nations don’t own anything, because property is owned by everyone in the group.  Culturally, individuals own nothing. To start to claim Intellectual Property Rights is to deny what is owned by everyone. “They don’t own their bodies, the words they speak, their mind, the music they sing, or the myths and traditions they pass from generation. All these things form part of their heritage. Gifts and creativity belong to the next generation”.

If money is owed to a nephew, the uncle has full right to claim some of it. Let a Pacific islander borrow a shirt and it is usually not returned. Not because they are trying to steal the shirt, but because of their simplistic inherent belief that wealth is defined by what they can give away. Their ability to play host, to be generous and give to others is a measure of their riches.

The idea of amassing wealth is foreign to these people. When the price of local grown commodities rise, due to rising food prices globally, the local people produce less. Once a villager has earned enough money to pay the school fees, buy clothing and a few basic supplies, there is no need to sell any more of their crop. When they are able to earn the same amount of money for less effort, why do anything more? They have no lasting dependence on a cash economy, though they do enjoy the limited benefits it gives them.

The majority of the population, particularly in rural areas, are unable to recognize potential commercial opportunities within their culture and capitalize on them. From metaphysics to blood cells, cultural expression to mineral rich volcanic ash, unique flora or fauna, unknowingly the Pacific islanders sit on a gold mine.

Education is an absolute necessity, if the younger generation of island people, who stand as a link to the richness of their traditional culture and partaking of the benefits of the 21st century. Only through education will they come to an understanding of how to protect their custom rights and privileges as well as maintain their island way of life, before their tropical island paradise is lost forever.

The message is clear for countries like the still underdeveloped tropical island nation of Vanuatu. The days of poorly educated politicians leaping on the Government gravy train and blundering their way through a few years of pocket-lining public office are over. There is a rising swell of opinion, demanding better education and health facilities, for all members of the community.
