French Polynesia Some Helpful Facts For The Visitor

Tahiti is south of the Equator, mid way between Los Angeles California, and Sydney Australia. It is in the same time zone as Hawaii.

The main languages spoken through French Polynesia are Tahitian and French.

You will find in the hotels and restaurants that English is spoken, however the local people do appreciate it when their guests at least make an attempt to learn a few of their words. They are very willing to teach anyone who is willing to learn, and they will do it with lots of smiles and big laughs.

In terms of entry requirements to French Polynesia, every visitor must have a return airline ticket to their home country or at least two more following destinations. In addition if required they must show evidence of sufficient funds to support themselves in French Polynesia.

For most visitors, who are tourists, you will need a passport that has six months to run, except US, Canadian, Australian, and New Zealanders where three months is sufficient.

The only exceptions to this, where visas are obligatory are tourists from Israel, Brazil, Venezuela, and Panama. In some other cases visas are required for stays of over one month, and in other cases over three months. To be safe you should make enquiries from your travel agent, or the French Consular office in your country. Always bear in mind that entry requirements are subject to change without notice, and it is the passenger’s responsibility to make sure that all documents needed are complete and current.

There are few health requirements for French Polynesia, and it is not a malaria area, but you should ensure your vaccination program is up to date, ensuring you visit your doctor at least five weeks before travelling. You are strongly advised to take out comprehensive travel insurance before leaving home. There are some outbreaks of dengue fever in Tahiti, so don’t travel without Deet, or some other mosquito repellent, and cover up at dawn and dusk.

The Law in French Polynesia is French law, so be aware that it is a criminal offence if you fail to offer assistance to a person in danger. This includes motor accidents, and any other occasion when a person is in danger, except if you would endanger yourself by offering assistance. If guilty you could be fined or be given a suspended prison sentence.

You must carry your passport at all times.

There are no sales taxes or hidden service charges in French Polynesia.

The currency is the Pacific French Franc[CFP], but bring traveller’s cheques rather than cash. Amex, Mastercard, and Visa are all accepted at all major establishments.

Finally prepare yourself for high costs as French Polynesia is 30 to 50% more expensive than most of the rest of the South Pacific

Romantic Wedding Destination in French Polynesia

Wedding is once in a lifetime event for couples and hence should be celebrated in a unique way. A variety of options are open to you in order to make your wedding truly special. One of the best options would be to conduct your wedding in any of the incredible destinations outside your home country.

Among the wedding destinations, probably the best would be the French Polynesian Islands in the South Pacific. Better known by the name of its main island, Tahiti, French Polynesia is truly an amazing destination to exchange your marriage vows.

French Polynesia is an archipelago consisting of 118 islands, which are categorized into five island groups, such as, Society Islands, Tuamotu Islands, Marquisas Islands, Gambier Islands, and Austral Islands. Each of the islands found here is unique, and is especially noted for its picturesque surroundings consisting of palm fringed beaches, sparkling blue lagoons, rich flora and fauna, and the breathtaking turquoise sea. In short, Tahiti and its island are among the most romantic destinations on the planet.

The biggest as well as the main island in the French Polynesia, Tahiti in the Society group of islands is one of the most popular wedding destinations in the South Pacific. With its lush world consisting of dazzling waterfalls, soaring mountains, amazing plateaus, and pools, Tahiti provides a perfect base for weddings and honeymoons.

Bora Bora is yet another popular destination for weddings in French Polynesia, which is bestowed with towering volcanic peaks, lush green vegetation, and beautiful lagoons filled with rare as well as colorful fish and corals. To enjoy an authentic Polynesian wedding ceremony, a best destination would be Moorea, which is home to the much famed Tiki Village Cultural Center, a favored spot to perform traditional Polynesian royal weddings.

The Tiki Village provides options for three types of wedding ceremonies including the Princess Wedding, the Royal Wedding, and the Royal Deluxe Wedding. The Princess Wedding is complete with an exotic Tahitian village, the service of the village chief as well as the High priest to conduct the wedding ceremony, local musicians and dancers, beautiful crowns and garlands made of exotic flowers, photos of the ceremony, and a marriage certificate made of Tapa.

Included in the Royal Wedding packages are arrival of bride and groom from the hotel in a canoe, carrying of the couples by the Polynesian warriors in a royal chair on completion of the marriage ceremony, a romantic cruise on a royal canoe accompanied by musicians, and honeymoon night on a royal floating house. When comes to the Royal Deluxe Wedding, it combines all of the above, apart from a choir of Tahitian people singing during the wedding ceremony and a fabulous Tahitian dance show.

Popular wedding destinations in French Polynesia also include Rangiroa – the second largest atoll in the world. Situated in the Tuamotu Archipelago, Rangiroa boasts of stunning views comprising vast lagoon with stunning marine life. Qamea, Yasawa Islands, and Rarotonga, are the other great islands ideal for wedding functions, among many others are the sought after destinations for weddings.

No matter you have chosen which French Polynesian destination for your wedding, a traditional Polynesian ceremony is wonderful, unforgettable, and is considered a dream comes true. On the wedding day, the bride to be is treated like a princess, and the women of the village pamper her with aromatic flowers and Tahitian Monoi oils. Then dress her in Tahitian clothing. On the other hand, the groom is taken to a nearby beach to get tattooed. He is then dressed like a High Chief. After this, he returns the wedding spot. Mostly, the wedding ceremony is conducted in the Tahitian language, and there would be an interpreter to translate it to the couples. On the completion of the ceremony, champagne is served, which is followed by a wonderful Tahitian dance show.

However, weddings conducted in Tahiti are not legally recognized in the US. Hence, the United States residents interested in getting married here are recommended to have a legal ceremony in the US, and then come here to renew your marriage vows with a traditional Polynesian wedding ceremony. Further, there are certain requirements in order to get married in the Tahitian islands, such as at least one month of residency in French Polynesia prior to the marriage, birth certificates of both bride and groom, a copy of the notarized marriage contract, and celibacy certificate.

Many upscale resorts and hotels in French Polynesia offer superb packages for a memorable wedding. In most cases, the wedding packages are inclusive of assistance of a wedding planner to plan your wedding, traditional Tahitian wedding ceremony, a bottle of champagne, a sunset cruise, romantic dinner, and pictures of wedding ceremony taken by a professional photographer. These packages are also customized according to your specifications.

The Pearl of French Polynesia

Edit Article |

French Polynesia is a French overseas collectivity located in the South Pacific Ocean. An astounding vacation spot, this mid-ocean archipelago is made up of five unique island groups such as Society Islands, the Marquesas Islands, the Austral Islands, the Tuamotu Archipelago, and the Gambier Islands.

In other words, French Polynesia consists of its main island Tahiti and 117 other islands and atolls. Each of the French Polynesian Islands, better known as Tahitian Islands, is truly a paradise on the earth and is endowed with unspoilt beaches, soaring mountain peaks, extensive coral reefs, and distinct natural history. About 85% of the French Polynesian population is constituted by the Maohi – the native people of French Polynesia and the Demis, inhabitants that are blend of European and Polynesian descent. 10% of the population is European and the remaining is Asians, mainly the Chinese.

Of the French Polynesian Islands, perhaps the most sought after is Society Islands, containing Tahiti, Tetiaroa, Bora Bora, Moorea, Huahine, and Raiatea. The main as well as the largest of the French Polynesian islands, Tahiti is one of the most romantic places on the earth, bestowed with lush tropical region, deep green valleys, cool streams and rivers, wonderful beaches, and magnificent forest areas. While your stay at Tahiti, take excursion to such destinations as the Harrison Smith Botanical Gardens, the Museum of Tahiti, and Gauguin Museum. Further, an array of activities can be enjoyed here from golf and deep sea fishing to island adventure tours and helicopter excursions.

Located about 150 km north-west of Tahiti, Bora Bora is truly an oasis of romance and beauty, with emerald-like green hills and chameleon-shaped lagoons. Bora Bora’s attractions, among many others, are lagoonarium, enclosed by coral reef, Matira Beach, Marae Temples, and Tetiaroa Atoll & Bird Sanctuary. Also, a great destination in Society Islands is Moorea, which is much famed for its saw-toothed emerald views. Equally worth mentioning are Huahine, bounded by mountainous reef and consisting of two volcanic ranges, and Raiatea with its sister island Taha’a.

Above all, many of the islands in Society Archipelago such as Tahiti and Bora Bora are considered a great destination for conducting weddings as well as for a memorable honeymoon.

About 1500 km north-east of Tahiti is the Marquesas Islands, consisting of twelve volcanic islands, of which only six are inhabited. With the town of Taiohae as its economic and administrative region, Nuku Hiva is the main island in this archipelago. Hiva Oa, with a museum dedicated to the renowned French artist Paul Gauguin; Ua Poa, with impressive jagged cliffs; Ua Huka, which is much favored for its wood carvings; Tahuta, whose attractions are Archaeologic site in Hanamiai valley and Stone petroglyphs in Hanatehau valley; and Fatu Hiva, blessed with exotic flowers and herbs.

Sprawling over 1,200 km of the South Pacific, the Austral Islands are located to the south Tahiti. Among the spectacular islands in this group are Rurutu, Tubuai, Rimatara, Raivavae, and Tapa.

With more than 75 coral atolls, the Taumotu archipelago is truly picturesque. Additionally, interior lagoons in this island group are a haven for water sport activities such as scuba diving and snorkelling. Most popular among the islands in this group are Rangiroa, Manihi, and Fakarava. Gambier Islands are about 1800 km southeast of Tahiti, and comprise 14 small beautiful islands, of which the most populated and largest is the Mangareva.

Today, options are endless to explore the unparalleled beauty of the French Polynesian islands. One of the best ways is through unique yacht cruises. Almost all yacht and boat charter providers render superb choices for an enjoyable cruising in French Polynesian. For luxury lovers, yacht coupled with most sophisticated facilities are available. Even many of them offer options to enjoy a variety of water sport activities.

When comes to accommodation, choices are aplenty. Majority of the resorts and hotels in French Polynesia are replete with stylish as well as high end facilities and amenities. Some hotels also provide packages for a memorable wedding in Tahiti and Bora Bora islands. They also deal with all the legal procedures with regard to weddings in these islands. Apart from these, many hotels and resorts offer excellent options to enjoy an array of activities. There also hotels arranging for sightseeing in these islands. Much favored among the hotels in French Polynesia are Sofitel Tahiti Resort, Novotel Bora Bora Beach Resort, and Novotel Rangiroa Lagoon Resort.

French Polynesia – A Heavenly Destination

Sprawling over an area that is roughly about the size of the Western Europe, French Polynesia is an astounding destination in the southern Pacific Ocean. Boasting of mind blowing scenery, stupendous mountain peaks, dazzling waterfalls, magnificent valleys filled with aromatic flowers, isolated beaches and islands, incredible lagoons, and turquoise waters, French Polynesia is an overseas nation within the French Republic, and is made up of five archipelagos such as the Society Island, the Austral Island, the Gambier Islands, the Marquesas Islands, and the Tuamotu Island groups.

French Polynesia is better known by the name of its main island, Tahiti, which is in Society Archipelago. Each of the island groups in French Polynesia has its own significance, and is noted for its unique culture as well as ethnicity. Further, all of the 118 islands are much popular among the holidaymakers from across the world.

Most popular among the island groups in French Polynesia is the Society Archipelago, which covers such incredible destinations as Tahiti, Bora Bora, Moorea, Huahine, and Tahaa and Raiatea. Crystal-like clear water, breathtaking beaches as well as coral reefs, soaring volcanic peaks, and beautiful waterfalls – all sum up the island of Tahiti, which is not only the most prominent island in Society Group but also in whole of French Polynesia.

Sometimes acknowledged as the ‘Island of Love,’ Tahiti includes two island masses such as Tahiti-Nui and Tahiti-Iti, both of which are connected by an isthmus, namely, the Plateau of Taravao. Further, Tahiti is also home to the capital as well as the bustling port of Papeete, which in turn houses an array of police headquarters, government offices, airline and travel agencies, banks, and telecommunications center.

Al though Tahiti is the main island in French Polynesia, Bora Bora is the most beautiful as well as romantic of all islands in the South Pacific. One of its specialties is brilliant multicolored lagoon, which contains an array of rare as well as beautiful marine species.

The beauty of the island is further enhanced by two majestic mountains that dominate the island, such as, the Mount Otemanu and the Mount Pahia. Bora Bora is also much famed for its mythical and mysterious legends. Hence, it is not a wonder why the island is much sought after among the honeymooners, newly weds, and couples celebrating their anniversaries.

When Tahiti is bestowed with the title ‘The Island of Love,’ and Bora Bora acknowledged as the most beautiful destination on the earth, Moorea is referred to as the magical island, with its jagged volcanic peak, beautiful crystalline lagoons, and isolated small motus. Located just ten miles from Tahiti, Moorea’s focal point is Tiki Village, which is frequented by couples who want to celebrate their marriage or renew their wedding vows in a special way.

When comes to the Huahine, it is popular among the vacationers as the Garden Island. Located about 120 miles north-west of Tahiti, Huahine is easily accessible from Bora Bora, Tahaa, and Raiatea. Other not to miss destinations in Society Archipelago is Tahaa, also known as the Vanilla Island, and Raiatea, otherwise called the Sacred Island.

With more than 75 coral atolls spread across more than 100 miles in the eastern Pacific, Taumotu Islands is made up of such magnificent islands as Rangiroa – the largest atoll in the archipelago; Manihi, noted for its clear lagoon; and Fakarava – a rectangular shaped atoll. Located about 1500 kilometers north-east of Tahiti is the Marquesas Islands, which consists of 12 volcanic islands, of which only six are inhabited. Gambier Archipelago is situated about 1500 kilometers south-east of Tahiti, and is home is to about 14 tiny mountainous islands, among which the largest as well as the most populated is Mangareva. Above all, Austral Islands is located south of Tahiti, and is well-known for its unique art and culture.

All of these island groups provide a spectrum of options for visitors to indulge in a myriad of activities, from land and water sport activities to fun-filled and adventure activities. Just few among them are deep sea fishing, parasailing, kayaking, diving, 4×4 safari tours, hiking, climbing, and much more. Likewise, for sightseers, a plethora of options are available. For instance, Bora Bora in Society Archipelago provides a continuum of attractions in the form of ancient Maraes and remnants of World War II.

With these scores of attractions and activities to enjoy, French Polynesia draws vacationers from every nook and corner of the world. Hence, it has accommodation to cater to every taste and budget. Perhaps the most popular choice among the honeymooners and newly weds is over water bungalows, which are complete with most sophisticated amenities and facilities.

French Polynesia is perhaps the most beautiful as well as romantic destinations on the planet. Located halfway between Australia and South America, French Polynesia is a French overseas collectivity in the South Pacific Ocean.

Popularly known by the name of its core island, Tahiti – French Polynesia is a constellation of more than 115 volcanic as well as coral islands and atolls. The islands in French Polynesia are grouped into five groups, such as, the Society Islands, the Tuamotu Archipelago, the Gambier Islands, the Marquesas Islands, and the Tubuai islands.

Blessed with majestic mountain peaks, lush vegetation, and clear sparkling water, French Polynesia’s each island has its own unique flavor and charm. An amazing blend of beauty and tranquility, French Polynesia is a safe destination, with awe-inspiring attractions and amicable traditional Tahitian people.

Island hopping is the quintessential way to explore the magical beauty as well as interesting folklores associated with French Polynesian Islands. In other words, island hopping in French Polynesia is a great way to experience the unparalleled beauty of islands while enjoying a variety of recreational as well as adventure activities.

The glory of French Polynesia undoubtedly lies in Tahiti, its main island. Just few among many of its attractions are Tahiti lagoonarium with more than 1000 species of marine life; James Norman Hall Home; which served as residence of the renowned author, James Norman Hall; Point Venus, a historic site; and Paul Gauguin Museum, with an array of artifacts such as sculptures and wood carvings. Situated about 150 miles northwest of Tahiti and about 2500 miles south of Hawaii, Bora Bora is another much famed French Polynesian island. Bounded by verdant tropical flora, white sandy beaches, crystal clear lagoons, and turquoise water, Bora Bora is indeed an island paradise.

Magnificent islands in Society Island group also include Moorea, which is about 16 km Tahiti. As in the case of other Tahitian islands, Moorea is enriched with several myths. According to legends, a lizard with golden skin was abandoned by its human parents. As a result, it got stranded on Emeho reef. But, the gods turned this lizard into this Island. Indeed, Moorea is truly a jewel of French Polynesia.

Above all, many of the islands in Society Island such as Tahiti and Bora Bora are popular venues for weddings.

Situated more than 1500 km south-east of Tahiti, the Gambier group of islands includes 14 beautiful mountainous islands. These islands together are home to a myriad of stone buildings in the form of churches, presbyteries, convents, schools, weaving workshops, bakers’ ovens and watch towers.

The islands in the Marquesas group are about 1200 km north-east of Tahiti. Marquesas consists of six inhabited islands and six unpopulated islands.

When comes to Taumotu, it is an archipelago of over 75 low islands, spread across more than several hundred miles of the eastern Pacific. Taumotu’s highlights, among many others, are Rangiroa – the second largest atoll in the world, Manihi – where the South Seas gem was first farmed; and Fakarava, which is much famed for its various black pearl farms and tranquil white sandy beaches.

Also known as Austral Islands – Tubuai group islands are spread over 1200 km of the South Pacific. Included in this group are such incredible islands as Rurutu, Tapa, Raivavae, and Rimatara.

With five island groups and more than 115 incredible atolls, island hopping in French Polynesia would be really enjoyable. What you will need to make your island hopping a memorable experience are one whole week, leisurely mood, and an expert travel consultant. Island hopping in French Polynesia can be done in several ways.

One of the classic ways to perform island hopping in French Polynesia is through yacht cruise, with itineraries ranging from two to seven days. Usually, yacht cruises are mostly offered in the form of packages covering superb onboard facilities, sumptuous meals, and basic provisioning such as beverages and snacks. For those who want to do island hopping in an adventurous way, then one of the best options would be via rowing boats. In addition to yacht cruises, other popular ways for island hopping are through plane and helicopter.

When you choose travel consultants for island hopping, it must be checked whether the packages offered by them cover trips to much famed islands of Polynesia. There are some service providers that customize island hopping packages. Many hotels and resorts also now provide excellent opportunities for island hopping in French Polynesia, along with other activities such as hiking, canoeing, and kayaking.

Since the age of explorers Wallis, Bougainville, and Cook, legendary Tahiti has tickled imaginations worldwide. More recently, Tahiti became the most famous Polynesian island of all when Clark Gable (1935), Marlon Brando (1962), and Mel Gibson (1984) played the role of Fletcher Christian in three blockbuster Mutiny on the Bounty films. Even the horrendous French nuclear testing program from 1966-1996 did little to dampen this image.

For the modern traveler, there’s no getting around the fact that French Polynesia is expensive. Bora Bora is easily the most upscale tourist destination in the South Pacific with 17 resorts charging over US0 double a night without meals. Yet it’s also true that you can greatly reduce your costs if you book your top end hotel rooms as part of a package tour. Another option is to stay in small locally-operated pensions. Bora Bora has seven hostels and pensions in the US-100 range and Moorea has 11. On Moorea you can also camp.

Most visitors get around the islands by air, and Air Tahiti operates efficient services to 46 islands and atolls in French Polynesia. Here again, you can save money by purchasing one of Air Tahiti’s 28-day air passes. A Society Islands air pass will cost around US0, or US0 if you add on the Tuamotu Islands. The only interisland boat trip which is easy to do is Tahiti to Moorea which operates every two hours and costs US. Passenger-carrying cargo boats do ply from Tahiti to Bora Bora several times a week, but they’re basic and the overnight trip can be rough. If you want to experience the boat trip one way, you’re better off flying from Tahiti to Bora Bora and then returning to Tahiti by boat. I explain why in my guidebook, Moon Tahiti.

Car rentals in French Polynesia average US0 a day – expensive! Options include renting a bicycle instead of a car (on Moorea and Bora Bora) or traveling by le truck or public bus (on Tahiti). Four-wheel-drive safari tours are offered on all the main islands and these are also cheaper than renting a car. On Moorea, Huahine, Raiatea, and Bora Bora, there are sightseeing tours by outrigger canoe.

When to go? May to October is the cooler, less humid time, although prolonged rainfall is possible yearround. An optimum time to be there is for the Heiva festival on Tahiti, Huahine, and Bora Bora in early July. Whatever, don’t miss attending at least one Island Night at a fancy resort for the wild tamure dancing and drumming. These happen several times a week. You can often avoid the high cost of the buffet by settling for a drink at the bar.

One thing you won’t encounter in French Polynesia – unless you spend most of your time at a large resort – is a tourist glut. French Polynesia gets only 200,000 tourists a year compared to the six million who visit Hawaii. Geographically, Tahiti is actually east of Hawaii, and the flight from Los Angeles to Tahiti takes only 7.5 hours, just 2.5 hours more than it takes to fly to Hawaii. My most memorable experience in French Polynesia? The cruise to the Marquesas Islands on the Aranui, something I hope to do again very soon.

You can get to French Polynesia reasonably easily from most parts of the world. It appears inaccessible but that is simply the distances involved, and the length of the flight particularly if you are coming from Europe or the eastern Seaboard of the USA.

Airlines such Qantas, Air New Zealand, Air France, Hawaiian Air, all fly into Papeete to Faa Airport.

In terms of getting around the scattered island of French Polynesia, there are two ways, and that is by boat or by air.

Air Tahiti flies from Papeete to 42 airstrips in French Polynesia.

There are a number of inter island boats which run regularly between the main island groups, and this is an incredible way of getting around this part of the South Pacific. There are huge catamarans that run between Tahiti and Moorea, but of course with the pressures of modern life and the probability that your vacation will be two weeks only, then flying is the most likely option for most people.

On the other hand French Polynesia is probably a once in a lifetime vacation, and you will have been flying for around 24 hours if you have come from Europe, so at least a month would still not be long enough to see and do everything!! It would however give you the chance to travel around a little by boat.

On land in Tahiti and the more developed islands there is a local bus service which is cheap cheerful and pretty reliable. A much more expensive option are taxis, and you can rent cars scooters, and bicycles to explore the island you are on. Finally you can hire 4×4’s to explore inland.

The big question about any vacation destination is the weather, what is it like, and when is it best to go?

French Polynesia has warm tropical weather all twelve months of the year. The climate is sunny and pleasant. You need to realise that as the islands of French Polynesia are south of the Equator, the seasons are reversed compared to Europe.

There are effectively two seasons, the first from November through to May when the weather is warm and somewhat humid with the daily temperatures averaging about 85 degrees Fahrenheit. It is at this time that most of the rainfall occurs, but it’s still sunny, and there is a refreshing breeze. Between June and October it is drier and cooler, with a daily average temperature of about 82 degrees. The average sea temperature is in the low 80’s and it rarely gets lower than 70 degrees at night.

It may take you a lot of flying time, but if ever a place was worth the effort it is French Polynesia
