Tiki Bar, Tiki Bars and Tiki Bar Ideas

Tiki Bars are drinking establishments with a distinctive, kitschy South Pacific theme for their decor and drinks menus. They specialize in tropical cocktails and often also serve food with a tropical flavor.

Decor

Tiki bars are decorated with an array of Hawaiian fabrics, woven grasses, glass floats, fish traps, South Pacific murals tiki torches and beach paraphernalia.

Motifs

Tiki motifs that are featured in Tiki Bars include tiki masks, hula dancing girls in grass skirts, ukuleles palm trees and bamboo.

Drinks

Tiki bars usually serve a variety of rum and tropical fruit based cocktails such as daiquiris, mai-tais, mojitos, piña coladas and zombies. They are often served in decorative tiki mugs with paper umbrellas, plastic animals and tropical fruit.

Origin

The first tiki bar was called Don the Beachcomber. It opened in Los Angeles, California, in 1933, served Cantonese food and rum-based cocktails, and was decorated with artifacts from the owner’s travels in the South Pacific.

Fun Fact

Tiki means “first man.”

A thatched roof is an important part of any tiki bar plans for reasons other than appearance. While they are waterproof, thatched roofs still provide good ventilation, due to the nature of their construction. This helps to keep you cool by providing shade and necessary ventilation in the summer. In addition, thatched roofing will also provide good sound dampening qualities, reflecting less noise than traditional materials, and helping your tiki bar to have a quiet, relaxing atmosphere. If you’re planning on building an outdoor tiki bar and a thatched roof is not currently part of your tiki bar plans, you should seriously consider adding one on. It will give your bar a much better appearance, create the right ambiance, and provide your guests protection from the elements. No tiki bar is really complete without one.

About A Tiki Bar And Tiki Hut Bars

The ever popular tiki bar has a long history. Introduced to this country in the mid-1930s, a man by the name of Donn Beach opened a legendary Hollywood hotspot named Don the Beachcomber based on his experience with Polynesian culture. The idea spread like wildfire and by the mid to late 1950s, a number of restauranteurs began to copy the tropical drinks and cuisine adopted by Beach. Tiki huts and tiki bars began to spring up around the country and some business owners even experienced a fair

Cruise vacations are revered the world over for being some of the most luxurious, fun filled and relaxation-centric vacations available. However, the notion that cruises are one size fits all excursions is simply not true. With more cruises than ever leaving ports around the world, your options are limited only by the amount of navigable water in the world.

Although a getaway to the Caribbean with its white sand beaches, warm ocean waters and perfect weather may sound ideal to some, it’s not for everyone. Before you cross the potential for cruising off your list of possible vacations, consider some of these more exotic, or at least less thought of, destinations.

The Nile

The world’s longest river and perhaps the most famous for the last 5000 years or so, the Nile offers adventure filled river cruises, providing a unique and quite historical vantage point for some of Egypt’s most ancient treasures. Nile cruises tend to follow the river’s northward flow, beginning at Aswan and the temples of Abu Simbel, and continuing on past some of the world’s largest and impressive dams.

Typical Nile cruises also feature a stop at Luxor and the Valley of Kings, where Tutankhamen’s tomb was discovered, before culminating at Cairo where you’ll be able to tour the great pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx. This amazing cruise is a dream come true for anyone interested in the ancient world.

The Danube

For another historically packed river cruise, nothing beats a trip along the blue Danube in Central Europe. Cruises along the Danube rarely miss beautiful Vienna, the city of music that inspired Mozart, Beethoven and Strauss where you can find world class performances from each composer on a nearly daily basis today.

Other common destinations where river cruises dock include Slovakia’s capital of Bratislava, situated at the foot of the majestic Carpathian Mountains. Be sure to book a trip that ends at exotic and historic Budapest, Hungary for a glimpse at one of the oldest and most culturally important cities in Central Europe.

Alaska

If adventure is your cup of tea, you certainly won’t regret a cruise getaway to North American’s final frontier—Alaska. Alaskan cruise give you a close up view of the wilderness from the comfort and safety of your cabin or deck and offer a few unique chances to explore it all first hand.

Popular Alaskan cruise excursion include learning to mush a dog sled, taking helicopter and plane tours of active glaciers or even trekking across one on foot with a guided tour. And if it gets a little too chilly for your taste, you can always take a break in the ship’s sauna!

Australia

Adventure seekers and partiers alike will have a tough time passing up a trip to Australia. The home of the wallaby and koala offers incredible night life at the port of Sydney where you can catch a performance at their world famous opera house.

Later, cruises may head north, giving you a chance to experience amazing scuba diving along the teeming colorful barrier reef. Cruises also commonly offer excursions on Tasmania, giving you a personal view of some truly unique flora and fauna, and perhaps a stop at Wellington, New Zealand for good measure.

The South Pacific

Few places in the world have a reputation for being a veritable paradise like the islands of the south Pacific. Cruises to this land of sunshine and tropical beauty typically offer stops in gorgeous Fiji, French Polynesia’s Bora Bora and the legendary Tahiti. The perfect spot for a honeymoon or other romantic getaway, you can spend time relaxing on private palm lined beaches, take a dip in waterfall fed lagoons or get a look at the scenery beneath the waves with some world class snorkeling.

South America

Even though the Caribbean Sea just to the north is one of the most heavily cruised bodies of water in the world, few people think of exploring the exotic cultures and landscapes of South America by ship. Cruises to South America let you experience the bustling nightlife and packed beaches of Rio De Janeiro in Brazil or dance the tango and sip yerba mate in Argentina.

Other cruise itineraries often include trips through the busy Panama Canal and stops at Lima in Peru, Manta in Ecuador, and Valparaiso in Chile, also known as the Jewel of the Pacific, where indigenous and European cultures meld to create one of the world’s most exciting and unique cities.

Cruising is one of the fastest growing vacation industries in the world, and growing fleets mean you’ll have tons of destination options for your big getaway. Although the classic Caribbean cruise is an experience not to be missed, more exotic destinations are just the ticket for some travelers. Book your unorthodox cruise today and have the time of your life!

Prom Themes Ideas

There are many prom themes ideas for your committee to choose. Deciding on a theme is one of the more important decisions your High School planning committee will make. Just keep in mind with prom themes there is room to add or subtract details. If you remember this, then you should easily be able to pick out prom themes ideas that a majority of the Junior Class students can agree on.

Prom Ideas

Are you trying to go for something out of the ordinary or keep it more relaxed? Your budget, resources, and creativity will establish the boundaries for any prom ideas. The budget can give you a sense of the location for the venue since these facilities will vary with price. If you are planning a Michigan prom, I recommend choosing a banquet hall that is close in you area to reduce driving time (25 minutes or less). Some venues might make decorating more challenging, while others might spark your creative sense. The more resources your decorating committee has, the better. If you can make a majority of the decorations, or rent pieces at a discounted rate, this will save money and you will be able to allocate funds elsewhere. The disadvantage is that usually hand making decorations takes time and people. Usually this is feasible for high school prom themes that average 500 students.

Prom Themes

Now if you are brainstorming prom themes where the guest list is in excess of 1,000, then you will have to choose a bigger facility as well as one exceptional prom theme. Below are a couple of quick things to consider before we rattle off a list of prom themes ideas.

Are looking for something romantic?
Are you trying to match it with current trends?
Do you want something mysterious?
How much fun can you incorporate into the prom theme?

High School Prom Colors

There are many colors for you to choose from. You can either have them slightly offset, match your school colors, or have them be completely different. I recommend having your high school prom colors match the theme. This will give you dance more balance and keep things consistent with what students will be expecting. A couple of events based just on colors:

All White Party Prom Theme
Black and White Ball Prom Theme

How to Choose a Prom Theme

Which one should you go with? Do you need more help with how to choose a prom theme? Well, it is important that you avoid doing the same prom theme two years in a row. Also you should check with local high schools to make sure that you do not accidentally duplicate their ideas (this might create bitter feelings). Make sure you prom theme is achievable with the banquet facility you have chosen, and that resources for decorating can be found easily. Also order a variety of prom catalogs to give you an idea of what you have to work with. Lastly hyping your high school prom is extremely important (this will help improve ticket sales). Make sure to play the song, and remind students of the theme with any school announcements/pep-rallies. Working with you budget is important for planning a high school prom dance, but you also have to give the students what they want. What is that…. a great send off for the seniors and something that makes your freshmen and sophomores anticipation next years’ prom!
