A couple without cellphones is more connected than a couple *with* cellphones

Looking back on some old photos from 40-50 years ago, I was struck by how visible the differences were between the culture of then, versus the culture of now. In some cases, it was evident from the things people wore, or carried, or did, back then which they no longer do today. But sometimes it was the opposite: things that didn’t exist back in the 1960s and 1970s have become a pervasive part of today’s culture.

A good example is the cellphone: 20 years ago, it simply didn’t exist. Even ten years ago, it was a relatively uncommon sight, and usually only on major streets of big cities. Today, of course, cell phones are everywhere, and everyone is using them in a variety of culture contexts.

However, I don’t think this is a permanent phenomenon; after all, if you think back to the early 1980s, you probably would have seen a lot of people carrying Sony Walkmans, or "boom-box" portable radios — all of which have disappeared…

If Moore’s Law (which basically says that computers double in power every 18 months) holds up for another decade, then we’ll have computerized gadgets approximately 100 times smaller, faster, cheaper, and better — which means far better integration of music, camera, messaging, and phone, but also the possibility of the devices being so tiny that they’re embedded into our eyeglasses, our earrings, or a tattoo on our forehead.

So the point of this album is to provide a frame of reference — so that we can (hopefully) look back 10-20 years from now, and say, "Wasn’t it really weird that we behaved in such bizarre ways while we interacted with those primitive devices?"

Note: this photo was published, cropped down to just the couple on the left, in a Nov 6, 2009 blog titled "Salesman Calling!: Where People Answer Their Cell Phones." It was also published in a Nov 25, 2009 blog with the same title as the one I put on the Flickr image, i.e., "A couple without cellphones is more connected than a couple *with* cellphones." It was also published in a Dec 3, 2009 blog titled "Which is best? Who knows?"

Moving into 2010, the photo was published in an Apr 26, 2010 blog titled "Cellphone: go prepaid or contract?" And it was published in an Aug 26, 2010 blog titled "What’s So Wrong With Facebook Places?

We *really* don’t pay attention to crazy old guys with a camera when we’re concentrating on our cellphone messages

This woman was walking up Broadway, at 81st Street. I think I could have walked right into her, and knocked her flat on the ground, before she would have noticed me…

Note: this photo was published in a Jun 23, 2010 "Technologeek blog, with the same title as the caption I used on this Flickr page. And it was published in an Aug 26, 2010 blog titled "What’s So Wrong With Facebook Places?", as well as an Aug 26, 2010 blog titled "Three mobile web marketing tips for the holiday shopping season."

Robo Livo, may not be able to attend his wedding ceremony due to the actions of one very upset swordfish.

The 31-year-old man, living on one of the tropical islands of Vanuatu, in the South Pacific, had his left hand amputated, following a vicious swordfish attack.Though swordfish attacks are very rare, it is a serious business when a human being is attacked, as Robo found out while swimming with his friends.

The deep waters between the main island of Santo and Tangoa were known to be dangerous, but recently the area had been declared safe. The villagers believed the curse had been lifted.

Robo was rushed to the Northern District hospital where microsurgery is in the same sphere as cyber space – unattainable.

Mr. Jeffrey Vutilolo explained, “Rob is lucky to have survived the attack. We believe that when fish escapes from the bait, it will one day return and attack the person that once tried to catch it. The attack was a sign, meant for Rob.”

Swordfish do not like company, keeping a distance of 10 metres away from others, attacking only when provoked. Once aroused, it becomes very dangerous, slashing is long sharp beak from side to side, to destroy its enemy, or render its victims senseless.

The villagers will once again live in fear of the deep stretch of waters between the two islands. Rob may miss his long awaited wedding ceremony. An occasion that only happens after the bride has proven she is capable of bearing at least two children and the groom has managed to scrape together the bride price. 80,000 vatu or three month’s wages.

For just a moment put yourself in a tiny dug-out canoe, crossing deep ocean water between the tropical islands of Tangoa and Santo. Imagine believing, like the rest of your village, that the fish you failed to catch and kill is going to attack you and seek its revenge.

This whole idea might sound crazy when you are driving in a fast car along a six lane highway, or flying 30,000 feet in the air in a comfortable, pressurized aircraft. But what if:

• You have never ridden in a car?
• Planes are nothing more than a silver streak in the sky.
• You have never had the opportunity to have an education because you have lived all your life on one of the remote tropical islands in the South Pacific.?

What if the fishermen of the world believed that every fish that got away, would come back and ‘get them’? The ever stretching tale of the ‘big one that got away,’ would suddenly wither-up and disappear.

The ancient myths and beliefs die hard in an oral society, in spite of having embraced Christianity for several generations. Good fear is healthy, but we have all experienced groundless fears. Most of us have learned to overcome them through education.

Vanuatu, a Lesser Developed Nation, has received a lot of donor aid from more affluent nations. Yet the statistics reveal a horror story of epic proportion:

• Only 55.8% of kids will get to year 6;
• Only 18.2 % will go to high school;
• 26% never go to school at all.

Dedicated primary school teachers introduce children to the exciting world of learning. Yet for the most part, the kids will never know what it is to go to high school.

The opportunity to take an active role in the 21st century will bypass most of the them. Custom lessons will be all they have.

You may ask the question, “Why not leave these children to their ancient customs. Why do they need to enter the rush and bustle of the 21st century?”

Would you still feel that way if you had to sit helplessly by and watch you child die from ‘nothing?’ Many times a loved family member dies of ‘nothing’. Or was that black magic?

Things happen from time to time in the villages, which modern knowledge could have prevented. In the world of the villager there is no such thing as a brain tumor, or burst appendix.

Do we have the right to stop high achieving students progressing forward? Do we have the right to condemn them to an island way of life and ignorance of modern technologies, if we could help them improve their way of life?

What would you say if you were told that your child could no longer go to school, just because you could not pay the fees?

Humans have three major needs for a full and rich life.
• Security;
• Adventure;
• Freedom of Choice.

The extended village family provides all the security the children could want. The beautiful untouched wilderness and surrounding ocean, provides the children with adventure. However, the freedom of choice dwindles, when high school education is unattainable.

Do we have the right to walk away from people like Robo, because we live in a more affluent society? We can help Robo and his children understand that swordfish do not take revenge. Had Robo lived in a modern environment, he would probably have still had his hand. He would have arrived at his wedding ceremony as pre-arranged and would not be condemned to live the rest of his life with a disability .

Rick and Wendy Tendys are raffling Seachange Lodge, (a private holiday home, plus 6 luxury holiday apartments) on the Internet, to raise funds for non-repayable high school education grants for the children of the outer islands of Vanuatu.

You can help them through a Blue Moon Opportunity. Your donation can make a difference in the lives of these people and YOU might WIN the boutique resort, in Port Vila.

“Lasting change comes only through change on the inside. Change through education,” Anonymous Quote

Did Jesus say: Peace be unto you or Assalaamu alaykum?

The interesting question is that what if the Arabic version of the Bible is the correct one? In this case, the Lord Jesus used the Islamic form of greetings; that is “Peace be unto you” which is pronounced as “Assalaamu alaykum” in Arabic. Remember that Jesus spoke Aramaic language that is very close to Arabic.

I think we can all agree that it would be great IF Adobe offered a ‘lite’ version of this reader, or better yet, a version where you may pick and choose installation options. I don’t like the humungous size either, since I view a PDF file once in a blue moon, but those who state it is the best reader make a valid point. Foxit’s rendering quality (compared to Adobe) simply doesn’t match up. If you are willing to sacrifice a bit of screen quality for smaller size, go Foxit. It’s really that simple.

Today, most online forms sent to us for completion come as PDFs. Adobe Reader will allow you to fill in those forms, as well as print them out, provided the security settings assigned to the document allow for it. In earlier versions, you did not have the option of creating a PDF file using Adobe Reader – you need to purchase Acrobat for that. With this latest version, you have a menu option that takes you directly to Acrobat.com, a web-based service that allows you to create up to five PDF files free of charge.

With Adobe Reader, you can easily add your own input into a PDF document by adding annotations with the help of the comment and mark-up tools bundled with it. Besides, you can also approve or reject a PDF file whenever you are asked to, and ensure the security of the document by signing or certifying it with a Digital ID. This will add extra security and validity to it when transferred through the Internet.

Regarding the Accessibility options, Adobe Reader allows you to use either a screen magnifier or a screen reader to access the content of the document, provided it has been correctly tagged.

uTorrent is an efficient and feature rich BitTorrent client for Windows sporting a very small footprint. It was designed to use as little cpu, memory and space as possible while offering all the functionality expected from advanced clients. µTorrent was written with efficiency in mind. Unlike many torrent clients, it does not hog valuable system resources – typically using less than 6MB of memory, allowing you to use the computer as if it weren’t there at all.

Taboos, or prohibitions, can cover many different aspects of life. They can come in many different shapes and sizes and are frequently an unconscious phenomenon, passes down from generation to generation. They are basically the unwritten rules and regulations of a society, or group and usually spoken of in terms of: ‘When in polite society you…’

Taboos can cover:
·    Sexual activities
·    Diet
·    Offensive language
·    Body functions
·    Relationships
·    Death
·    Birth
·    Marriage
·    Gestures
·    Health
·    Forms of greeting
·    Work ethics
·    Circumcision
·    Exposure of body parts
·    Illicit drugs

It appears some taboos began simply through a fear of a demonic force. Yet, it is over a period of time that taboos evolve, either socially, legally or through religious authority. Some are logical and serve a real purpose, while others are totally illogical. Many people react with a gob-smacking reaction of disgust when observing a taboo they are not familiar with. More often than not it is through the enforcement of taboos that the safety of the rest of the group is protected.

Tuesday16th September, in the tropical islands of Vanuatu in the South Pacific, was a holiday for anyone from the Penama province of Vanuatu, a peace ceremony was performed between the Vanuatu Agricultural and Technical Centre and Chief Molbarab. The chief had been counting on votes from the Centre to put him back into office in the general election. When the promised votes failed to materialize, emotions quickly ran high between the chief’s family and the Centre. It was alleged the Chief would close the Centre down, by placing namele leaves at the entrance to the Centre.

Namele leaves from the Chief’s Palm, are the perfect deterrent. In Vanuatu’s ancient culture, if two leaves are crossed and placed at the entrance to a business, the staff will adamantly refuse to enter the property. The business will be ground to a resounding halt, until such time as the dispute is cleared up.

Namele leaves and pig tusks are both seen on the Vanuatu flag. Pig tusks for the symbol of wealth and namele leaves for peace. However, the namele leaves have a double purpose. They are a sign of peace, as well as a taboo. If a senior village family, or person, feels they have an ownership to a particular fruiting tree, all they have only to tie a namele leaf on the trunk. Should anyone dare to partake of the forbidden fruit, they will be liable to a fine, imposed on them by the chief of the village.

Namele leaves were placed across a dental clinic, in Vanuatu, as a result of a dispute. Even though patients walked for miles and were booked in for appointments, the clinic was compelled to keep its doors closed until the dispute was settled.
In another incident in the Vanuatu islands, a dispute erupted over the illegal use by six persons, of a piece of land as their village garden, The owner, a chief, placed several sets of crossed namele leaves around the edge of the property. To make the taboo of the leaves even stronger, the chief killed a pig over the top of the crossed leaves. The offenders, who had illegally used the land, were ordered by the chief to pay one pig each. When the six offenders dared to refuse to yield to custom law, they were dragged away to be judged under white man’s law. The court ruled that the men were banned from use of the land, forced to pay full court costs for the defendant and still have to pay the chief one pig each.

The namele leaves are only example of the many taboos that run through the exotic and vibrant society of the ancient culture of Vanuatu, the ‘Must See’ adventure travel destination of the South Pacific.

Tuvalu, consisted of 9 circular coral islands, is located in the South Pacific. The land area of Tuvalu is only 26 square kilometers and the highest point is only 4.5 meters above sea level. As the global warming, Tuvalu will be submerged in 50 years and therefore the nation will be the first one to migrate the whole country because of global warming.

When a small propeller plane is at the 1500 meters high altitude, a Crescent Moon shaped island are displayed in the endless expanses of the South Pacific. As the plane falling, Crescent Moon gradually became a touch of the plains, narrow, long land into the sea like the one “rope.” Along the “rope”, the aircraft slowly landed in the capital, Funafuti airport runway, which is Tuvalu’s only a small airport. Tuvalu is an isolated island, where is only a group of ships one month and a flight one week. Walking in the only one street in Tuvalu, your heart would be up and down because the left is the choppy sea, turn right to see, it is still the sea. In the middle of the low-lying land where the road will emerge pool of water from time to time and you will feel it will sink together with the road. With an average width of only twenty to thirty meters, a bath can be given a thorough wash from head to toe just by 23 meters high waves. “Do not come running after dark, it will go to the sea without careful,” A local resident told, “Tuvalu is too small and topography also is flat, high tide will be sea water in many places and even the center road of the island.” He also advised us not to wear leather shoes because a wave which crossed the entire island will directly flow to the other side when a casual tide happened.

Tavala Katea provides a set of test data which show that 16 years from 1993, a total of Tuvalu’s sea levels rose 9.12 centimeters, according to this figure, 50 years later, the sea level will rise by 37.6 centimeters, which means that plans Tuvalu at least 60% of the country completely sink into the sea.

Have you ever asked “How to protect my computer against Avast Trojan Horse”? If you have searched this question on the Internet, I believe you will get different suggestions to protect your computer. But which one is the best to prevent Avast Trojan Horse? Do worry! You will get the answers here!

First, let’s have a look at what Avast Trojan Horse really is.

Avast Trojan Horse will secretly install on users’ computer without letting them know or installation requirements. Once it installs on the computer, some ruinous problems will come on the neck of others such as:

1. The computer runs slower than ever before or takes forever to start up/ shut down or run large programs.

2. You browser or other account settings have been modified without your permission even though you have changed it back several times.

3. Your programs don’t work properly for Avast Trojan Horse will attack the programs installed on the computer which resulting in missing/corrupt items. These items will stop you from successfully running the program that you exactly want.

So how does Avast Trojan Horse get on the computer?

After chatting with one of my friends who dedicates on computer technology, I know that Avast Trojan Horse always gets on users’ computer through the below channels.

1. Bundled with other programs downloads. This is the most common ways for Avast Trojan Horse to get on the computer.

2. Avast Trojan Horse will slow com onto your computer when you are browsing unsafe websites. These websites will be plated with some malicious codes. When the PC users visit the website, it will make use of the vulnerabilities in your browser to infect the computer without permission.

3. Most of the time, Avast Trojan Horse will disguise themselves as an useful utility and user will sometimes download and install them directly on the computer without realizing them it will do harm to the computer.

4. Avast Trojan Horse is also contained in email attachments. Please note it is very easy to fake email address. Even though the email address is not faked, your friends, co-workers, or other members will also unsuspectingly send you an infected file which contains Avast Trojan Horse. So it if highly recommended that you should first scan the received email attachments before opening them.

From the above discussion, we know that it is very easy for Avast Trojan Horse to get onto your computer from aspects which has no way of guarding against that manually. But with powerful anti-spyware software installed on your computer, you can protect your computer against Avast Trojan Horse effectively.

Anti-Avast Trojan Horse programs are designed to realtime protect computers against kinds of PC threats. So if wanting to protect your computer against Avast Trojan Horse, it is highly recommended that you should install an Instant Spyware Removal on your computer.

clever spammer found a fault in the system send a Facebook photo and used it to post one thousand unwanted messages this weeks Wall.
Facebook error confirmed Friday, after notifying the users concerned about this.
Andrew Jones was one of the victims. He thought that his Facebook account was hijacked on Sunday after a friend pointed out spam messages on the wall. Quickly changed his password, but I fear that some of his other e-mail may have been taken over too. There is no other visible signs of compromise, and came to the conclusion, the most likely scenario was a public computer, I recently used some types of malicious software on it, said IDG News Service via e-mail.
It turns out that the problem was all Facebook.
Earlier this week, we discovered a bug in the code that processes the images as they are uploaded. This error did not cause us to a proper control in determining whether the photo should be posted to the profile of the person, said Facebook Friday in an e-mail statement. Worked quickly to resolve the problem and fixed it immediately after discovering it. For a short period of time before it was fixed, a spammer can send pictures to the profiles of people that are not approved.
Most messages promised to Free iPhone, a common message spam on Facebook these days. free iPhone and IPAD message usually take users to pages on which they are instructed to complete marketing surveys, or register your subscription product. Victims reported that their phone numbers inundated with calls after completing these studies.
Facebook maintains that the spammer hit one thousand profiles before the company removed unwanted pictures and notified to interested users. No accounts have been compromised by error, Facebook said.
People, whose walls were hit spam I got a notice from the Facebook security team, reading:
For several hours on Sunday, it was not spam incident on Facebook. At that time, photographs mostly from the allegedly free iPhone have been placed on the walls of some people, including you. We have removed the image from the Wall and it was found that the problem spammers allowed to do so. Unfortunately, the photo, but I can assure you that it did not affect the security of your account in another way.
Spammers love Facebook because users are more likely to click on the Facebook wall posts and messages than on links in e-mail.
This week, Facebook introduced a new control , which allow users or unauthorized computers were used for logging into your account.
But spammers will try to use Facebook, according to Chris Boyd, a senior researcher with security vendor GFI Software.
Image spam is used by the Free iPod spammer can be very effective, he said. Image spam is a great way for scammers to promote the false conclusions and research, he said via instant messaging. An individual can fall for something like this will likely attract more than a pretty picture at random-link spam.

You could be getting more than you bargained for when you download a PDF or receive one as an email attachment. PDFs can run scripts upon opening them and could potentially compromise your system.

Adobe Systems Inc. confirmed the existence of two new vulnerabilities in their Adobe Acrobat Reader application. The news was announced May 4 by Trustwave and other security agencies which stated that Adobe expects to release patches by May 12, 2009. The vulnerabilities involve JavaScript functions that ‘getAnnots ()’ (CVE-2009-1492) and spell.customDictionaryOpen (CVE-2009-1493). According to Secunia.com the ‘getAnnots ()’ function is a JavaScript API in Acrobat Reader and Acrobat that allows remote assault to cause a denial of service through memory corruption or execute an arbitrary code via a PDF that contains that annotation. This is conducted through an OpenAction entry using JavaScript code that issues a series of crafted integer arguments or calls.

The customDictionaryOpen spell method is also a JavaScript API that affects Adobe Reader 8.x – 9.1 running primarily on Linux System. It allows remote hackers to deny services through a memory corruption and, similar to the ‘getAnnots’, may be executed through an arbitrary code via a PDF. Mac users don’t have to be too concerned about the customDictionaryOpen function as this is mainly something that will come up using Linux. The most troubling out of the two is the ‘getAnnots ()’.

These vulnerabilities cause a Macintosh-based Acrobat Reader versions 9.x – 8.x and Acrobat 9.x – 8.x to crash and have the potential to allow a hacker to attack and take control of a vulnerable system. Simply disabling JavaScript will not resolve anything; it only disables the vulnerable JavaScript component but does not reduce system compromise. The United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT) has recommended the following precautions for those that have or yet to encounter these PDFs.

Do not open unsolicited PDF files from distrusted or suspicious sources; switch your default PDF handler to Preview for the time being; and disable Adobe Reader JavaScript Preferences to prevent hackers from exploiting system vulnerabilities. To do this:

(1) Launch Adobe Acrobat Reader
(2) Select Edit from the Menu Bar
(3) Select Preferences
(4) Select the Internet Tab
(5) Uncheck the “Display PDF in Browser”

In addition, prevent your default browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, etc.) from automatically opening PDF documents. The installer that loads Adobe Reader and Acrobat configures any one of your browsers to open a PDF file without any user interaction. To disable the browser from displaying of PDF documents:

(1) Launch Adobe Acrobat Reader
(2) From the main Menu select Edit
(3) Select Preferences, Click on the Internet tab
(4) Uncheck “Display PDF in browser” checkbox.

Avoiding opening PDF documents in a web browser reduces the possibility of attack. The following workaround applied to the updated version of Adobe Reader should protect against future vulnerabilities.

If you have a PC, additional preventative measures are listed at the US-CERT site that further reduce your chances of attack. Currently Adobe recognizes this as a critical issue and recommends that you follow the above listed steps and exercise common sense when opening PDF files. Please visit the Adobe Product Security Incident Response Team blog for further updates on this issue.
