If you fly directly east from northern Queensland for 2500 kilometres, you will be over Fiji. Looking down, you would see more than 800 islands – some large enough to hold thousands of people, others are very small. About 100 of these island are inhabited. If you flew down to 1323 metres while over the island of Viti Levu, you might hit the top of Tomanivi, Fiji’s highest peak. South-east of Tomanivi is Suva, the capital of Fiji. Main cities include Nadi, Sigatoka and Lautoka on Viti Levu and Labasa and Savusavu on Vanua Levu.

Fiji was populated for more than 3000 years before contact with white people. Most people living in Fiji had come from other islands in Melanesia, although some came from Polynesia and Micronesia. Villages developed their own traditions and language. Although the Dutch visited Fiji in the 1600s, regular visits from Europeans did not begin until traders and missionaries made contact with the Fijians in the early eighteenth century. This delay was partly due to the reputation of Fijians as ruthless cannibals.

In 1874, Fiji was declared a British colony. The British brought to Fiji many thousands of Indian labourers to work on the sugar cane. Indigenous Fijians resented so many non-Fijians settling in their land, and the British government introduced laws that banned non-Fijians from owning land. Fiji became an independent country on 10 October 1970 with a system of government based on that of Britain.

About 800 000 people live in Fiji. The nearest Australian city in size is Adelaide, with a population of 1050 000 people. Three-quarters of the population live on the island of Viti Levu. Indigenous Fijians make up about 50 per cent of the population, with Indian Fijians accounting for 45 percent. The remaining five per cent are of European or Chinese or people from other Pacific Islands.

Most Fijians live in rural areas, but the number of people migrating to the cities has increased. Life for indigenous Fijians in rural areas revolves around their village. Each village has a chief, who is usually a man. The way of life in the villages is communal, with everybody helping everyone else. Indigenous Fijians speak Fijian and English.

Indian Fijians speak Fijian Hindi and English. Although most Indian Fijian families have lived in Fiji for many generations, their culture remains similar to families in India. Women wear saris, and most marriages are organised by parents when their children are young.

Fiji, like Australia, has a high literacy rate. About 90 per cent of Fijians can read and write (in Australia, it is 98 per cent). However, unlike Australia, education is not compulsory in Fiji, but it is encouraged. The government pays for children to attend, school until year nine, then fees must be paid by students’ families. Most schools are run by religious or community organisations. Fiji also has the University of the South Pacific and the Fiji School of Medicine.

Most Fijians work on the land, and the main crops are sugar and coconuts. Fishing is a large part of Fiji’s agricultural sector. Gold mines also provide work and much-needed income for the country. Fiji’s most important industry is tourism, and many of Fiji’s tourists are Australian. In 1987 and 2000, military coups discouraged foreigners from visiting Fiji, which resulted in economic hardship.

Fiji’s major attractions are its natural attributes: the sea, the highlands and the islands. Most visitors to Fiji go to enjoy the beaches, with diving and snorkelling being popular pastimes. The Mamanuca group of islands, off the west coast of Viti Levu, have some of the country’s most beautiful beaches. The Abaca Cultural and Recreational Park, north-east of Nadi, contains waterfalls, rainforests and walking tracks that guide visitors through unimaginable beauty.

In 2000, George Spejght, an indigenous Fijian, led a coup against the Fijian Government. Speight and his followers kept Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry and other Politicians captive for more than three weeks before releasing them and forming their own government. Chaudhry is of Indian Fijian descent. Speight claimed he was representing indigenous Fijians who did not want Indian Fijians to have political rights. Speight was arrested, and power was given to a newly elected president.

To Go to an Expert Travel Agent or Directly to the Operator?

In our lifetimes we hopefully spend more on our travel wants and needs than on any other professional or expert in their chosen fields such as lawyers, accountants, plumbers, electricians, builders, dentists, doctors and we certainly choose them very carefully, so why not use the same quality control when choosing a travel agent. Also, as with our other experts, there may be different agents needed for different destinations and activities, so do not necessariy stay with one agent for all of your travel requirements unless of course the agency has different experts for different products and services.

Tuvalu, consisted of 9 circular coral islands, is located in the South Pacific. The land area of Tuvalu is only 26 square kilometers and the highest point is only 4.5 meters above sea level. As the global warming, Tuvalu will be submerged in 50 years and therefore the nation will be the first one to migrate the whole country because of global warming.

When a small propeller plane is at the 1500 meters high altitude, a Crescent Moon shaped island are displayed in the endless expanses of the South Pacific. As the plane falling, Crescent Moon gradually became a touch of the plains, narrow, long land into the sea like the one “rope.” Along the “rope”, the aircraft slowly landed in the capital, Funafuti airport runway, which is Tuvalu’s only a small airport. Tuvalu is an isolated island, where is only a group of ships one month and a flight one week. Walking in the only one street in Tuvalu, your heart would be up and down because the left is the choppy sea, turn right to see, it is still the sea. In the middle of the low-lying land where the road will emerge pool of water from time to time and you will feel it will sink together with the road. With an average width of only twenty to thirty meters, a bath can be given a thorough wash from head to toe just by 23 meters high waves. “Do not come running after dark, it will go to the sea without careful,” A local resident told, “Tuvalu is too small and topography also is flat, high tide will be sea water in many places and even the center road of the island.” He also advised us not to wear leather shoes because a wave which crossed the entire island will directly flow to the other side when a casual tide happened.

Tavala Katea provides a set of test data which show that 16 years from 1993, a total of Tuvalu’s sea levels rose 9.12 centimeters, according to this figure, 50 years later, the sea level will rise by 37.6 centimeters, which means that plans Tuvalu at least 60% of the country completely sink into the sea.

The Happiest Country on Earth, in the South Pacific, has a Special Role for Pigs in the Local Genera

In the United States, Hilary Clinton is the woman pioneer of the 21st Century. Ms Clinton has paved the way for women to enter the higher echelons of the political arena. Battle for Vice-President could well be fought in the female arena.
The female hand rocks the nation. Once again this may be proven to be true in the 21st Century political arena, where more and more women are mobilizing behind female candidates. In order to succeed in the polls, Obama should consider electing a female for the Vice-presidency, according to political writer Douglas Drenkow. This should lessen the impact should McCain choose to follow suit.

Undeterred by the rising trends of the 21st Century, lying to the South West Pacific is the secluded tropical island paradise of Vanuatu. One time voted in 2006 as the “Happiest Country on the Earth”. This small tropical island thrives on heavily male dominant society, whereby it is rare for a woman to achieve high ranking chiefly or political status.

In one traditional community found in a group of small islands known as Shepherds, it is acknowledged through the matrilineal hierarchy that by birth or matrimonial right a woman may be bestowed this prestigious status. It was therefore an unprecedented move, when the National Council of Chiefs acknowledged the late Grace Molisa, from the island of Ambae, as a personage of high status, both in the cultural and political arenas. Especially where on Ambae this is never heard of.

Following in her aunt’s footsteps, Jenny Ligo, also from Ambae, has become the second woman to have been bestowed with this high status by the Chairman of the Vanuatu National Council of Chiefs, Chief Paul Tahi. Previously CEO for the Vanuatu National Council of Women, Jenny was, bestowed this prestigious status after performing a grueling 11 pig clubbing ceremony to commemorate her marriage to her husband, Joe Ligo, in 2007.

A mirror image to the Hilary legacy, Ms Ligo does not only have the Ambae chiefs to back her, but has gained the support of the women of Ambae and other islands.

In 2006 Vanuatu was voted the “Happiest Country on Earth’. Vanuatu people with their deep cultural and traditional societies rely on three basic elements for healthy living. Romance, Adventure and the Security of Freedom of Choice.

The first two are easily achieved in this adventure travel paradise, yet there is uncertainty in the lives of today’s younger female population with regards to the Security of Freedom of Choice.

Free education is but a dream in Vanuatu, and the lack of government recognition by way of social welfare programs, means that the meager income generated is invested in the education of the boys.

The harsh reality then is a woman’s destiny lies in her own hands. Etched deep within is their rich cultural norms and value, yet a vast majority lack any formal qualifications.

Where many of the islanders live on under per day, young girls miss out on the opportunity to become educated. As peer pressure of the 21st Century escalates around them, young girls find themselves in a life scarring situation, as was the case of the 16 year old girl, who was attacked by two youths as she was walking home from work.

Under age employment is illegal under the Labor Laws of Vanuatu. Without proper education, most rural communities are ignorant of the legal ramifications.

There is a growing restlessness in the younger generation, who are demanding the right to an education. The right to become qualified leaders for their country.

In late 2007, the government admitted that it does not have the finances to provide free education. Statistics have changed little since 1999.

The horrendous consequences of this are:

• only 55.8% of Vanuatu kids will get to grade 6;

• of those only 18.2% will go to high school;

• 26% will never go to school at all.

YouMe Support Foundation is one of the few charities raising funds for these educationally challenged youths. Their Child Trust Fund provides non-repayable high school education grants to the children of the Outer Islands. Children who will never have the opportunity to see the inside of a high school classroom.

Through her courageous performance of the pig clubbing ceremony and the acquisition of a recognized prestigious status, Jenny Ligo has become the icon of HOPE in the lives of these far fetched communities.

Cross Country – Why Country Music Isn’t Just Country Music

Once upon a time, Country was Country, it was easily discernable for other genres and it did not cross openly into other genres, or so Music Purists like to believe. Today it is not unusual to see several “cross-genres” of Country Music, bringing in elements of pop, rock and folk, but then again it is not easy to forget that Music has its roots in folk, gospel and has often crossed the genre lines throughout its history. So here are some subgenres you might see.

Pop
To some this is the ultimate blasphemy, after all ‘pop’ is all about upbeat tunes and positive lyrics, the opposite of Country, how then can they be crossed? It is hard to define Pop as there are no ‘rules’ as to what makes a Pop artist. It has its roots in the 1960s, with some artists introducing more ‘popular’ music into their songs to sell more music and to get into the charts. Example artists are Shania Twain, Oliver-Newton John, John Denver, with mixed results and causing great controversy among purists of either side. True singers of this music were troubled by this trend of cross-genre artists, preferring to stick to their traditions; hackles were raised when Music Awards were handed to Pop singers, rather than ‘true’ singers.

Kenny Rogers was a big hit in 1977 with his Country Pop “Lucille” and many other artists followed, in more recent times, the likes of Shania Twain and LeAnn Rimes have gained fame as Country Pop singers, and pop singers have even crossed over. But although the lines between Pop and it have certainly become more relaxed, there are many more that would happily see an end to this subgenre of this, which to some sounds too pop and not enough.

Bluegrass
A descendant of Country Music, with cousins in traditional English, Scottish and Welsh Music, the Bluegrass phenomenon is an ever growing one. Unlike, Bluegrass relies on often technically demanding instrumental solos, while it has its heart in simple chords, Bluegrass players will use any stringed instrument to perform improvised musical solos as other accompany. They can sing, although there is no rules as to what, anything from Gospel to this,
The Founder of Bluegrass Bill Monroe, created a band he named the Blue Grass Boys in 1939, created the model of sound and instruments Bluegrass players uses today in their music. Some people say Bluegrass has lost it in its rhythm, but others appreciate the mixed genre sound of Bluegrass and understand its complex roots.

Blues
A cross between Country and Blues, C. Blues usually refers to acoustic blues,. While C. Blues have roots in folk, the followers prefer to separate themselves from this, claiming individualism and a more deeply, personalized feel to the music. Like this, the C. Blues tell a story and the messages are often heartfelt and it is a genre that stylized the African-American culture of the early 1900s. While it may be hard to distinguish C. Blues from Country on paper, listening to it makes it easy to tell the difference; C. Blues has a rhythm of its own and has certainly become a genre to itself.

These are only a tiny handful of the many sub-genres out there, some are still recognizable as others have long since diverged, and if you listen to C. radio stations you will certainly hear music from many of the subgenres. It has diverged into many other musical genres, and many are enjoyed by it lovers around the world.

Country Guitar Lessons ? Discover A Popular Way To Learn How To Play The Guitar

For years, country music has been a very popular form enjoyed by countless millions of people. Historically, there have been performers from Roy Orbison, Patsy Cline, Glen Campbell, and Johnny Cash in the late 50’s and 60; to some of today’s stars: Tim McGraw, Kenny Chesney, Leann Rimes, and Carrie Underwood. All of these musicians have thrilled fans for decades through the passion and emotion heard in their songs. Throughout history, many country legends have also been excellent guitar players. Are you the person who has always wanted to learn how to play the instrument? Interactive, online country guitar lessons today are probably the best way in which to learn how to play the instrument.

There is no easy way to learn how to play any instrument. You must be willing to put in the time and effort whether you are learning how to play the drums, cello, or trombone. Learning how to play the guitar is absolutely no exception to this rule. Besides mastering the technique required for you to improve on the guitar, it is also necessary for you to learn how to read music. Guitar is the one instrument where instead of reading notes on a music staff; (like you would on the piano, saxophone, trumpet, or violin) you must learn how to read the tabs or tablature. Chords on the guitar, (G, D, A7, etc.), are written on the tablature. This is much easier in comparison to reading the musical notes on the staves written for a Chopin Piano Etude, as example. Still, it requires dedication and practice on your part to learn how to master reading the tablature, in order for you to really excel on the guitar.

The advantages to learning how to play the guitar online should be obvious you. Even 10 years ago, if you wanted to learn how to play country guitar it would have been necessary to find an instructor in your area who worked out of a music studio. If you lived in a remote, sparsely populated area this would have presented a problem. It might have been necessary for you to travel 20-25 miles, one way, just to find a studio that provided lessons. Not all studios specialized in country music, unfortunately. You might find a teacher, but he/she might specialize in acoustic rock, or jazz guitar. You’re simply not going to learn the style and technique necessary for country guitar if the instructor was more familiar with a Jimmy Page or Jimi Hendrix. Both Page and Hendrix are all-time great rock guitarists, and are not at all associated with country guitar.

If you are serious in wanted to take lessons in country guitar, you must do your research and homework on the Internet. Find a suitable program that provides instruction in the style of country music that you are seeking. Read the recommendations, which should be posted on the site’s home page of students who have taken lessons and invested money into the online program. Pay particular attention to those testimonials stating that former students were able to learn different styles of music; particularly those students who were able to successfully learn how to play the country guitar.

Online country guitar lessons have lately been considered both practical and a popular way in which you could successfully learn how to play the instrument. You would still need to do your due diligence by completing research online before you invest your money into a program. I hope that I have piqued your interest enough in wanting to seek much more information, which is available. Please visit this site: http://theplayguitarlessons.info.

I have always been a life-long lover of music. I majored in music while in college, and earned both my Bachelors’ and Masters’ Degrees.  Learning how to play an instrument should be something that any person would want to pursue.  Whether you have an interest in learning how to play the drums, guitar, trumpet, or cello; the instrument that you choose should be a representation of your inner self.  Playing an instrument has been proven to medically lower stress in the body.   Playing an instrument well would improve your self-esteem.  It requires dedication, effort, and desire to really excel on any instrument.  It is my hope to make you aware on the importance that music can be within your life.  Every person should not let the opportunity pass by, as being able to play an instrument can prove itself rewarding throughout a lifetime.

The Top 5 Best Country Love Songs

It is all about pain and frequently about love, whether it’s loss of love, or unrequited love, just like many pop songs, but the Country songs tell a story, and the heartfelt words are often enough to bring a tear to even the strongest eye. But with all the Country Love songs you can listen to, which are the best and which ones should you choose to listen to.

5: “I Fall to Pieces” Patsy Cline
Patsy Cline was born September 8th 1932 and enjoyed success as a Country Music singer, crossing over into Pop, and is considered one of the most successful artists. “I Fall to Pieces,” was released in 1961, and climbed to number 1 in the Country charts.

4: I can’t help it (If I’m still in love with you) Hank Williams
Hank Williams Hank was born Hiram King in 1923, and is considered one of the best if not the best C. Music singer, his legendary status was only reinforced when he died at only 29. He released “I can’t help it” in 1951 with Howling at the moon. Hank had 11 number 1 hits and his influence over this genre is widespread and still growing. Hank can be considered the backbone.

3: “How Do I Live” LeAnn Rimes
LeAnn Rimes born 1982, is a cross genre artist, and although not considered by everyone to be a true Country singer, her single “how do I live” became very successful and the longest running single in the top 100 billboard, although the single is not necessarily considered pure Country by Country purists, her cross genre songs are very commercial, enjoyed even by those who don’t enjoy Country.

2: “You Were Always on my Mind” Willie Nelson
Willie Nelson was born in 1933 and is an iconic C. Music singer, and has remained successful throughout his life. “You Were Always on my Mind” was written by Johnny Christopher, but Willie Nelson recorded a version in 1982 and become number one on the Country singles chart. The song has been covered before and since, although this version is popular among Country enthusiasts.

1: “I Will Always Love You” Dolly Parton
Dolly Parton was born in 1946, and is one of the most famous female Country singers, over 25 number one hits. She wrote “I Will Always Love You,” and in 1974 it went to number one in the charts, but more famously Whitney Houston covered the song in 1992 and it became an instant number 1 hit, as a soundtrack for The Bodyguard. It was a massive international hit and is considered the biggest selling single of all time.

There are many other Country Music love songs, others perhaps that sold more singles but didn’t have quite the same influence over the genre, crossing the great divide into popular music, as well as impressing diehard fans – something that is notoriously hard to achieve.
