Depending on the age of your travelers and whether you’re planning a romantic getaway or a family fun free-for-all is going to have a defining impact on the type of cruise you choose.

By determining well in advance who will be going, you can really narrow down the choices.

2. What’s Your Budget?

Setting a budget in advance will help you plan how much you spend and the type of cruise vacation that you can afford. A typical cruise vacation costs about 0-0 per day per person, excluding airfare. If your budget only allows a cruise on the lower end of the expense spectrum, this will eliminate many available options and likely make your search process faster.

Booking early, booking last minute or being willing to take an inside cabin are ways you can save money on your cruise. Inside cabins do not have a window view of the ocean.

3. How Much Time do You Have?

Knowing how much vacation you have will help you narrow down your cruise choices. For example, if you only have 5 vacation days available, you won’t be indulging in that 3-week adventure up the coast of East Africa.

Typically, a week’s vacation allows for a solid 5-7 day cruise in the Caribbean. It can also work depending where you are in North America, Hawaii, Alaska, Europe and even the South Pacific.

On the other hand, a 3 or 4 day cruise will likely only allow for one stop on land. If you love your time on the ship, however, you may not care.

4. When Do You Want to Travel?

Having a rough idea of when you want to go will help you focus on specific sailing times and even destinations. For example, Alaska cruises only operate during the five summer months. And if time in the water is important to you, traveling during the warmer months will be more enjoyable.

5. Where Do You Want to Go?

From Africa to the Caribbean to the South Pacific, cruises travel all over the world. If you know, for example, you want to explore the cities of the Mediterranean, you’ll be able to focus your search on Mediterranean cruises.

6. What Activities Do You Like?

For every taste, there’s a cruise ship that caters to it. From wine tasters to extreme athletes, there are cruises designed specifically for you – you just have to determine your interest.

7. Do You Like Structure?

Some cruise ships have set dining times, ranging from as early as 6:00 p.m. to as late as 9:00 p.m. Others offer freestyle service which allows you to eat when you please.

8. Do You Enjoy Formal Wear?

Before you book a luxury cruise that offers formal dining every night, ask yourself if you’re ready to pack your tuxedo. Whether you want to dress up for dinner every night, just a few nights or not at all, there’s a cruise for you. Just be sure to research your options before you purchase.

Even though Juanita Hall sang in close to 900 performances of “South Pacific” on Broadway, according to vocal arranger Ken Darby her voice had taken on a much heavier tone by 1957 and she was having trouble sustaining high notes. Music director Alfred Newman thought that it was unnecessary to dub her and asked Ken to work with Hall on smoothing out her voice to a level and vocal style that Richard Rodgers would approve. By the time of the recording sessions she was singing better than she had in the original 1949 stage production, but even though she achieved a vocal quality closer to what Rodgers preferred, Rodgers was enamored with and always preferred Muriel Smith’s voice (Smith played Bloody Mary in the London production). It was at his insistence that Hall’s vocals were dubbed. No prerecordings were ever made of Hall since by the time of the recording sessions it had already been decided that she would be dubbed. Hall was a good sport about it and was grateful to have the opportunity to preserve her Tony Award-winning performance as Bloody Mary in the film. Ken Darby said that she was one of the nicest and hardest working performers with whom he was ever privileged to work. Director Joshua Logan, in his book “Movie Stars, Real People, and Me” wrote: “Juanita Hall had her own style of singing and it seemed a shame to miss its special quality in our picture. Still, they were the experts on music and, more than that, my bosses, so in spite of my misgivings, I was forced …

If you are looking for a true surfer’s paradise, you need to jog on round to New Zealand. This remote island is blessed with all the things that make for the perfect surf. Strong winds, the force of the Pacific Ocean, currents to liven things up a little and surf shops in abundance supplying every type of wetsuit, surf board, sex wax and surfing paraphernalia you could possibly wish for.

New Zealand is one of the most beautiful countries you could possibly wish to live in or visit. Life is as laid back as any surfer could possibly dream for. The scenery is absolutely breathtaking and every road leads to a beach with breaks that will challenge you and beg to be conquered.

However, underlying the serenity of New Zealand there still simmers a debate about land ownership between New Zealanders that originate from the West and Maoris. This will still come up from time to time and surfers have encountered this exact thing. Donned with wetsuits and boards, they have recently found themselves turned away from two of the favourite surfing beaches, Sky Williams and Mangahume at Taranaki. This, some say, is because the Maoris want to reclaim this land but even the surfers themselves believe it is not so.

The land is privately owned and is home to three cemeteries that restricted access is protecting. Maoris hold a lot of store by their ancestors and even by Western standards it is only right to respect burial grounds. Taranaki is on the Western coast of New Zealand, near New Plymouth, and surfers from all over the world will head there in the summer to catch a few waves. There is concern that shutting two of the favourite hotspots will affect the tourist industry but having been there myself, I doubt this very much. New Zealand has vast amounts of coastline, all ideal for surfers to dip their wetsuits.

Next best surfing opportunities after New Zealand have to be Hawaii, the true home of surfing. World famous competitions are held here due to the perfect waves. Any new producer of wetsuits would do well to have their product showcased in Hawaii, that’s one thing that will propel them straight into main stream surfing circles.

Originally, surfing was considered a sport of royalty who could afford to move around the world throughout the year, always having access to the best waves. It has now become a sport for all and is one that will keep you fit and strong and tanned.

For Hawaiian surfing, you are best to pack up your wetsuit and board and head north between November and March. Waves generated from Alaskan winter storms head into Hawaii creating a surfers paradise. The make-up of the ocean floor on Oahu’s north beaches are perfect for riding monster waves and endless barrels. For wind surfing, Hookipa Beach at Maui is where you need to be.

You would be wasting your time trying to surf north Hawaii during the summer months as the sea is as smooth as glass. It’s tropical storms in the south Pacific that send their shock waves in the form of surfing waves to the south of the island during summer months. Waikiki Beach at Oahu and Poipu Beach at Kauai are where you need to be for surfing and boogie boarding conditions.

There are surfing possibilities around the world all year round. True dedicated surfers will follow the waves and compete to be the best. For the rest of us it’s a seasonal past time that requires a dust off of the old surf board that’s been propped in the garage for the last six months and a deodorizing spray of the stinky wetsuit.

In this day of designer shoes, bags and clothing, the newest trend is “designer dogs”. There are Labradoodles, Goldendoodles, Pugles, Yorkipoos and many more. Did you know the Doberman was one of the first designer dogs?

The Doberman is a dog of German descent, developed by Karl Freidrich Louis Dobermann between 1864 and 1889. Herr Dobermann was a tax collector in Apolda, a German town in the state of Thuringia. He was also in charge of keeping local strays off the street and in the dog pound. Louis Dobermann carried money with him on his tax collecting rounds, and wanted a dog for protection.

Louis Dobermann had an idea for medium sized dog that would appear intimidating. His idea was to base his dog on a terrier since they were, and still are known for speed, coordination and tenacity. Herr Dobermann wanted a dog that was intelligent, easy to train and required little grooming. His position of dog catcher gave him easy access to stray dogs of many breeds. Unfortunately, he did not keep records of what he bred. It is generally thought based on the look and temperament that the Doberman (the spelling changed when the breed came to the states) was based on a combination of several different breeds of dogs.

The following is a list of breeds thought to contribute to the Doberman we know today:

Beauceron- A French breed known as “King of Sheepdogs”, popular in Europe. This breed is elegant, powerful and has a fierce hunting instinct. It is also known as an intelligent dog.

Rottweiler- This breed was included for its size, stamina and tracking ability.

The Old German Pinscher- (now extinct) Known for alertness, aggressiveness, and its black and rust coat.

Weimaraner- This breed is good a tracking, pointing and retrieving. Weimaraners have a stable, protective and affectionate temperament. Well bred Dobermans of today have similar temperaments.

Manchester Terrier- This breed was included for its coat, head shape and rust markings. Manchester Terriers are keenly observant, devoted and loving, but also determined and fearless.

English Greyhound- The Greyhound would have contributed height, stamina and speed.

After Louis Dobermann died, Otto Goeller took over development of the breed. He is credited with refining the Doberman and used the kennel name Thuringen. He also helped determine the standard for the breed in Germany. In 1889 he established the first Doberman Pinscher Club. Herr Goeller and another Doberman breeder, Herr Gorswin of the Groenland Kennel produced several of the most important Dobermans in the breeds history and are the ancestors of modern Dobermans.

The first Dobermans were brought to the United States in approximately 1908. After 1921, the Doberman became more well known as more dogs were brought over from Germany. Because of their loyalty, devotion, confidence and fearlessness, the United States Marine Corps used Dobermans during World War 2. When the United States Marines landed in the South Pacific in 1943, it was the first time the military used dogs in combat. The Doberman was the official war dog of the United States Marines. 2and courageously served in the jungles of the South Pacific alongside the troops. They warned the soldiers of the enemy waiting in ambush or hiding in caves. The Dobermans guarded troops while they slept in foxholes at night saving many lives. These dogs gave their lives protecting the Marines.

In 1993, Dr. William Putney contacted Ray Carlisle, of the United Doberman Club to discuss a War Memorial for the War Dog Cemetery in Guam. They worked together to raise money and commissioned a statue by Susan Bahary. It was erected as a tribute to the working heritage of the Doberman. The statue is a bronze life size replica of a Doberman with the words “Always Faithful” inscribed on the front along with the names of the dogs buried there.

Originally, the Doberman was bred for its aggressiveness as it was used almost exclusively as a working dog, for guarding and protection. Over time, more consideration was given to temperament as Dobermans became more popular as show dogs and family pets. Today the Doberman is frequently used in Search and Rescue and as therapy dogs. Although still true to their breeding as protection dogs, Dobermans are known by their people as “Velcro” dogs because of their desire to be as physically close as possible to family members. A properly trained and well bred Doberman puppy will grow up to be a loyal, loving family member with the ability to protect your family to the point of laying down their lives.

For a vacation of a lifetime on a secluded tropical island check out what the Tiare Beach Resort can offer you.
