The islands of Samoa are emerging as an exciting new South Pacific travel destination between Hawaii and New Zealand. This “Heart of Polynesia” is politically split into two distinct entities 80 miles apart. The country Samoa is a former German colony, captured by New Zealand in 1914 and granted independence in 1962. In 1997 the name was changed from Western Samoa to Samoa.

American Samoa is the only U.S. territory south of the equator. Annexed by the United States for use as a naval base in 1900, the territory no longer has any military significance. Instead, Pago Pago currently hosts the StarKist and “Chicken of the Sea” tuna canneries, making it the most important commercial fishing port under the American flag.

The Samoan environment is tropically lush, with green volcanic peaks plunging to brilliant coral reefs, an ecotourism paradise still unspoiled by mass tourism. Visitors often stay in open Samoan beach houses called fale (pronounced FAH-lay) and adopt the laidback local lifestyle. Swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking, surfing, deep sea fishing, and hiking opportunities are all close at hand.

Samoan culture is alive and strong, and local traditions can add another fascinating layer to your travel experience. Most Samoans are subsistence farmers who reside in small villages governed by chiefs (matai). The egalitarian ideals of this communal society place loyalty to family and religion above all. Visitors can sample this culture at the weekly “fiafia” island night dance shows staged at most of the larger hotels and beach resorts. Buffets of authentic Samoan dishes are an essential part of these events.

Samoa’s climate is sultry, alternately sunny and rainy, but always hot and humid. Cooling sea breezes make the shoreline the best place to be year-round. The nicest months weather-wise are May to September, “winter” south of the equator. The rainy season runs from November to April, with increasingly intense hurricanes sweeping in due to global warming. Yet you can get long spells of bright sunny weather even during the “rainy” season, and Samoa’s excellent Vailima beer (created by German brewmasters) tastes best at this time of year.

Most visitors spend their time in independent Samoa, which is considerably bigger and less expensive than American Samoa. However the rugged scenic beauty of Tutuila, the main island of American Samoa, should not be missed. In recent years some of the most strikingly beautiful parts of the territory have been incorporated into American Samoa National Park. There’s great hiking on Tutuila and wonderful snorkeling on Ofu in the seldom visited Manua Group.

Traditional Samoan culture is largely based on oratory, and it’s no accident that several literary legends originated here. Robert Louis Stevenson spent the last five years of his life in Samoa and is buried on a hilltop above Apia, the capital. His mansion is now a museum dedicated to the author. Somerset Maugham’s short story “Rain” about Sadie Thompson and the repressed missionary thrown together in a guesthouse at Pago Pago, American Samoa, has been adapted by Hollywood several times. The original guesthouse still exists, now an upscale restaurant and inn. In “Tales of the South Pacific,” James A. Michener based the prototype of his character Bloody Mary on an Apia hotelkeeper named Aggie Grey, whose family still operates Samoa’s largest resorts. Michener’s book was later made into the musical “South Pacific.”

Getting to Samoa is easy with direct flights from Hawaii and Los Angeles on Hawaiian Airlines, Polynesian Airlines, and Air New Zealand. Local ferries and small commuter planes ply frequently between the islands, and getting around by public bus or rental car is no challenge. Visas are not required by most visitors for entry to either Samoa, although a passport and onward plane ticket are mandatory.

The Solomon Islands are a beautiful destination in the South Pacific. There are gorgeous beaches, wonderful resorts, and the luxury and relaxation of island living waiting for you in the Solomon Islands. Moreover, gamblers and those looking for indoor recreation will find that the Solomon Islands casinos offer excitement and fun for your days and nights away from the beach.

The Solomon Islands offer warm hospitality, a friendly atmosphere, and the beauty of the South Pacific. They are world renowned for scuba diving, fishing, and snorkeling. The South Pacific is also becoming a more and more popular destination for surfers. Natural beauty abounds, offering everything from beaches to lush wooded areas to stunning waterfalls. The Solomon Islands are known for beautiful beaches and wonderful water sports. Lodging options range from beachfront resorts to isolated eco-lodges.

As with many island vacation retreats, gambling is another popular activity in the Solomon Islands, offering a great nighttime activity, or a fun indoor retreat from days on the beach and water of the South Pacific. If you plan to gamble, you will find that the majority of Solomon Islands casinos are in urban areas, many near Honiara. Honiara is the site of the Solomon Islands airport; so many travelers enter via Honiara.

Several Solomon Islands casinos offer all the modern amenities a gambler could want. Blackjack, roulette, slots, and even darts are available in the casinos. Some casinos are free standing, while others offer beach resort accommodations. Gambling is loosely regulated in the Solomon Islands, and the area is, in fact, a common locale for Internet gambling sites. Recent rioting has impacted gambling in the Solomon Islands, so visitors planning a trip and looking forward to gambling in the Solomon Islands casinos should monitor local news reports to determine the safety of their planned gambling excursion and the current state of any Solomon Islands casinos they hope to visit.

The Solomon Islands offer astonishing natural beauty, great scuba diving and surfing, and relaxing days on the beaches of the South Pacific. The Solomon Islands casinos offer fun and exciting gambling experiences for interested parties. Gambling in the Solomon Islands casinos can provide a great entertainment option to visitors to the South Pacific. The Solomon Islands can be a peaceful retreat or an exciting island getaway, but regardless of how you choose to explore your Solomon Islands vacation, you are sure to cherish the memories for a lifetime.

Honeymoon Packages Rarotonga Cook Islands – How to Select a Great One

Rarotonga is the main island in the Cook Island group and as the beautiful tropical island that it is, provides a great destination for weddings, honeymoons and generally relaxing sun filled holidays.

The South Pacific and the Cook Islands in particular, have become more of a focused tropical destination for holidaymakers worldwide and as market awareness increases for the South Pacific basin generally, the strengths of the Cook Islands are being recognised.

Most resorts in Rarotonga are now fully optimising not only their accommodation properties, but are realising the value of providing the “total wedding and/or honeymoon package”. Many of the wedding packages have what you would normally include in the way of wedding services, but many also provide a wedding co-ordinator who can make sure the whole process is in place and organised by the time of your arrival on to the island. With Honeymoon Packages, the emphasis is often on arrival atmosphere at whatever property has been your choice, most acknowledging the occasion with a bottle of bubbly, a small gift or maybe petals scattered across a turned down bed, with chocolates on the pillow – and of course fresh flowers never go amiss!

It does pay to do comparisons when selecting a tropical destination in the South Pacific because the differences can be many and selecting one that actually represents great value, takes some time and effort.

1. Some properties keep their normal accommodation rates and have “value added items” which they then discount down and submit to their websites for publication.

2. Another option is for accommodators to discount not only the “add ons” but also their nightly accommodation rate and in these cases, there is usually a minimum stay requirement (i.e. 5 nights) if guests want to receive the full package value.

3. Yet others discount nightly rates, and then list their normal inclusions anyway whether you would be on a honeymoon package or not, with just maybe one tour, massage, or dinner voucher added.

Whatever option you decide on, there are some great packages to be found for a romantic escape in your tropical Cook Island destination vacation.

There are also many private beachfront villas available should you decide on the destination of the Cook Islands, from the more basic through to what some might consider to be the ultimate romantic tropical island vacation properties. These are mostly self catering and with the lagoon and white sandy beach at your doorstep, it is hard to imagine a more perfect setting for this very special time in one’s life.

Most private villa accommodations do have the same services provided that one would expect in a larger resort such as full daily servicing, tour desk, dining options and office facilities for all your questions and required information.

Finally it is worth of note that a lot of South Pacific Cook Island Honeymoon or Romantic Escape Packages, are available as “internet only” specials and apply for direct bookings with the property only. They are often not available through a travel agent or wholesaler.

Finally whatever romantic escape package in the South Pacific you choose, there is no doubt that just being in the Cook Islands will add a very special dimension to your vacation.

Fiji Islands – An Idyllic South Pacific Escape

Occupying a land area of about 18,350 square kilometers, Fiji is an archipelago nation, situated in the center of the South Pacific Ocean, west of Tonga, east of Vanuatu, and south of Tuvalu. Fiji is about 2000 miles north-east of Australia, and has the Hawaiian Islands to the north and New Zealand to the south. Officially known as the Republic of the Fiji Islands, the archipelago of Fiji consists of 322 islands and more than 500 islets. Of which only about 100 islands are inhabited.

Formerly known as the Cannibal Isles, Fiji Islands were first inhabited by the Polynesians. In 1874, Fiji became a colony of the British. Nearly after a century of British rule, Fiji gained independence in 1970. But, Fiji has now become a major hub of the trade and tourism in the South Pacific and one of the significant stopovers for flights between New Zealand and the USA.

With its sheer beauty, thousands of magnificent beaches, beautiful volcanic islands, coral reefs, pristine lagoons, palm fringed shorelines, lush green forest areas, and volcanic peaks rising up to 3000 ft, Fiji has now become the most enchanting tourist destination in the South Pacific.

No matter you have come here for celebrating your anniversary, honeymoon, or just to enjoy sport activities such as scuba diving and snorkeling, Fiji has superb options for all. The Fiji Islands has been categorized into three groups such as the central islands comprising Viti Levu and Vanua Levu; the Lau Islands; and the Ra Islands, containing the Mamanucas and the Yasawas.

The largest as well as the prominent among the islands in Fiji is the Viti Levu, which is home to Suva – the capital city. Viti Levu boasts of all that is required to make your vacation at Fiji truly enjoyable as well as unforgettable, including well maintained cities, tropical mountains, lush green areas, scintillating waterfalls, upscale hotels and resorts, and stupendous beaches coupled with diving facilities.

For nature enthusiasts and travelers seeking solitude, one of the great destinations in the country is Taveuni, often referred to as the Garden Island, because of its abundance of beautiful as well as colorful flowers. Almost all plants and animals that are indigenous to the country can be seen here. Attractions, among many others of this island, are Lake Tagimaucia with a volcanic crater and Bouma Falls, which is one of the most scenic in the world. Additionally, Taveuni is home to some of the best diving sites in the country, such as, the Rainbow Reef and the Vuna Reef.

Another popular island among the Fiji Islands is Vanua Levu, which is located about 65 kilometers north of the Viti Levu. This is also the second largest island in the country. Labasa and Savusavu are the main towns in the island. Taking a tour to Vanua Levu is a great way to experience to the indigenous life of the country.

Also, prominent among the islands in Fiji is the Kadavu, located south of Viti Levu. About 75 percent of the island is occupied by rainforest, and also included in the landscape of the region is several soaring mountains, beautiful waterfalls, and incredible beaches. A rich variety of bird species can also be seen here. In addition, Kadavu also boasts of Great Astrolabe Reef, one of the premier scuba diving resorts in the country.

Apart from these, things to see in Fiji are endless, ranging from museums and cultural centers to beautiful shrines and monuments. Perhaps most prominent among the attractions in the country is the Fiji Museum in Suva, with an amazing selection of artifacts that throw light on the interesting past of the region. A gallery housing prehistory-related items can also be found within the museum. Aside this, the museum provides opportunities for the visitors to take a ride in Vitian drua, a traditional type double hulled canoe.

No visit to Fiji would be complete without taking a tour to Sri Siva-Subramaniya Temple in Nadi, which is the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. Dedicated to the Lord Muruga, the temple is much famed for its exquisite architectural styles. Attractions in Fiji also include Orchid Island Fijian Cultural Centre in Suva and Suva Municipal Market, the South Pacific’s largest as well as liveliest market.

Above all, Fiji is a paradise for water sport lovers, and in fact, provides superb options to enjoy an array of water sport activities such as scuba diving, water skiing, snorkeling, swimming, coral viewing, wind surfing, fishing, sailing, and kayaking. Even some high-end resorts and hotels in the area render facilities for activities such as boat trips and para-gliding, apart from excellent accommodation and dining facilities.

Hong Kong-based Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts currently owns and manages 54 hotels under Shangri-La and Traders brands with a rooms inventory of over 27,000. Shangri-La hotels are five-star deluxe properties featuring extensive luxury facilities and services.

Tropical Islands of the South Pacific Ripped Off

Life has continued for thousands of years, in a simplistic form, in the tropical islands of the South Pacific. Culture and tradition have been the rule of the village, where the people live very much hand to mouth, as the necessity arises.

However, these ancient indigenous communities are not protected from the abuse of International Property Rights, in the ever expanding cut throat scene of global commerce. The only way to stop the highway robbery is to look urgently and seriously to the educational needs of the next generation.

The very simplistic way of life of these people has preserved unique pockets of areas, untouched by modern civilization, that are a unique experience for the tourist  and a delight to the scientist.

A library of genetic markers, which will be used as a unique resource for ecologists and evolutionary biologists around the world, is currently being produced through an ambitious research program, on the picturesque tropical island of French Polynesia. It is a combined program between a United States Californian university and a French research institute.

Once such projects turn into profit, it is usually very little profit that finds its way down to the islanders, whose homes have been violated. One has only to look at the large diamond fields of the world to ascertain this.

Co-editor of the book, ‘Pacific Genes and Life Patents’, speaks of a high profile situation  where medical anthropologist, Carol Jenkins, who allegedly stole leukemia curing genes from the Hagahai people in the highlands of Papua New Guinea. The United States, through its National Health Institute, patented the DNA cells, stamping ownership, without permission, upon something that belonged to a group of people and their unborn generations, with little recompense to the local people.

Neither the individuals, their communities, nor their government were informed of the project. When the Hagahai people objected, the US government said their claims were inconsequential.

The question, which is as old as commerce itself, is who should gain from the benefits of such projects? The company who found and researched the product, or the original owners of the source of the raw material?

History proves that such projects have not shown any kindness to Pacific islanders.

Mead says the indigenous people of the Pacific nations don’t own anything, because property is owned by everyone in the group.  Culturally, individuals own nothing. To start to claim Intellectual Property Rights is to deny what is owned by everyone. “They don’t own their bodies, the words they speak, their mind, the music they sing, or the myths and traditions they pass from generation. All these things form part of their heritage. Gifts and creativity belong to the next generation”.

If money is owed to a nephew, the uncle has full right to claim some of it. Let a Pacific islander borrow a shirt and it is usually not returned. Not because they are trying to steal the shirt, but because of their simplistic inherent belief that wealth is defined by what they can give away. Their ability to play host, to be generous and give to others is a measure of their riches.

The idea of amassing wealth is foreign to these people. When the price of local grown commodities rise, due to rising food prices globally, the local people produce less. Once a villager has earned enough money to pay the school fees, buy clothing and a few basic supplies, there is no need to sell any more of their crop. When they are able to earn the same amount of money for less effort, why do anything more? They have no lasting dependence on a cash economy, though they do enjoy the limited benefits it gives them.

The majority of the population, particularly in rural areas, are unable to recognize potential commercial opportunities within their culture and capitalize on them. From metaphysics to blood cells, cultural expression to mineral rich volcanic ash, unique flora or fauna, unknowingly the Pacific islanders sit on a gold mine.

Education is an absolute necessity, if the younger generation of island people, who stand as a link to the richness of their traditional culture and partaking of the benefits of the 21st century. Only through education will they come to an understanding of how to protect their custom rights and privileges as well as maintain their island way of life, before their tropical island paradise is lost forever.

The message is clear for countries like the still underdeveloped tropical island nation of Vanuatu. The days of poorly educated politicians leaping on the Government gravy train and blundering their way through a few years of pocket-lining public office are over. There is a rising swell of opinion, demanding better education and health facilities, for all members of the community.
