Samoa Vacation- a dream comes true

Officially known as the ‘Independent State of Samoa’, Samoa is one of the most popular islands in South Pacific. Samoa is a group of ten islands among which the Upolu Island is the most populated and popular. Each of these islands offers explicit and varied environments to look into. You will simply love to watch the massive valleys and the two main volcanic mountain peak islands covered by the rain forests. It looks great when the valleys that are leading towards the coastline are ringed with a beautiful natural necklace of white pristine sandy beaches.

The scenic beauty of the lush green valley where banyan trees are seen towering just above the rain forest canopy will simply take you to your dreamland. The canopy is filled with variety of vegetations and tropical blooms. Samoa Vacation can never be memorable if you leave out the cascading waterfalls crawling down the rugged mountains into the rivers. The waterfalls that fall into the rivers make a convenient way to the massive ocean. You will simply be in love with the magnificent coastline that comes with glimmering white pristine sandy beaches. There are even few places where these coastlines stretch for miles.

Apart from the rugged terrains and the coastlines, you will find the blue lagoons just beyond the sandy beaches where the other islands are scattered thereby forming the Samoa archipelago. The islands are some densely inhabited, some have wildlife and some are sheltered by the outskirt coral reef. If you want to spend your holidays at the “heart of Polynesia”, then nothing can be better than Samoa Islands.

The tropical environment, lush greeneries, green volcanic peaks, coral reefs and the sandy beaches will truly make your Samoa Vacation a memorable one. Often travelers love staying in the open beach Samoan houses thereby adopting the local lifestyle. You will be amazed to find plenty of water sports and activities like snorkeling, diving, swimming, surfing, deep sea fishing, kayaking and so on. If you are an adventurous person then you must definitely utilize the hiking options.

Talking about the climate of the Samoan islands, you must know all the details before visiting the place. The climate is hot and humid and sometimes rainy and sunny in an alternate way. The best thing about the climate is the cooling sea breeze that makes the shoreline simply unbeatable throughout the year. The best time to visit this island for a Samoa vacation would be between month of May and September. If you come in between November and April, you may face the strong hurricanes apart from the heavy rains. However, you can also enjoy the long spells of the blazing sunny weather during this season. The most interesting part is the awesome Vailima beer that tastes simply great at this point of year.

Before planning a vacation to Samoa, you must jot down every bit of details to get a clear idea about the place. These days Internet plays a very important part in making you learn about the place. Browse through different websites and find out the details of the place, go through the reviews, contact the travel agents and then plan your Samoa vacation. Get to know about the vacation packages that will reduce your excessive expense and make your holidays memorable.

About Samoa

Samoa, or the Independent State of Samoa, to give the country its official name, is a country located off the North West coast of Australia. It is a part of the Samoan Islands archipelago in the South Pacific Ocean.

With a population of just over 180,000, you are not likely to bump into anyone real soon. In spite of such a small population and a secluded existence however Samoa is a picturesque surfing spot where you can enjoy a perfect surfing holiday.

Important

Due to the effect of tides and wind on the surf, conditions in Samoa usually makes impossible to surf all day.  If your main holiday objective is to surf all day every day then Samoa may not be the destination for you. On most days a 3-5 hour surf trip departs early morning and returns before lunch, then there is the possibility of surfing directly out front of the resort later in the day.

If you are planning a surfing holiday now, plan it through World Surfaris. They are the experts in surf travel. The respected leaders with over 20 years surf experience, they can arrange the best surf trips to the Maldives, Indonesia, Mentawais, Sumatra, PNG, Caroline Islands, South Pacific and heaps more regions where the surf is pumping. They have surf trips to perfect uncrowded reef-breaks with just you and your mates. World Surfaris represent a diverse range of “Unique Surf Adventures” catering to all standards of surfers and their budgets. A major ingredient for success hav been maintaining the highest customer service standards whilst selling at very competitive prices.

A team of highly experienced travel consultants ensures that travel arrangements are handled with the maximum professionalism. The motto “Get the hell out of Here” is an apt way to describe the company philosophy. World Surfaris have the largest range of surf boats and surf resorts available for all budgets. If you need maximum surfing time with minimum hassle then they will have the surf trip for you. For any further information please visit www.worldsurfaris.com.

Surfing – riding the waves

Man has always enjoyed grappling with and subduing the forces of nature. In most cases, such an encounter with the full force of rampaging nature leads to total destruction and chaos for humans, such as in the case of hurricanes and tsunamis. In some cases however, man has actually been able to control nature and use it for his own enjoyment and recreation; the prime example of this being surfing.

Scientology Volunteer Ministers Help Samoa Recover from Tsunami

Edit Article |

Posted: Oct 10, 2009 |

]]>

A team of Scientology Volunteer Ministers is helping Samoa recover from the tsunami that hit the island early Tuesday, September 29.  The tidal waves carried entire villages out to sea and killed at least 140.

An 8.0 earthquake 120 miles off the coast jolted people awake in Samoa at 6:48 that morning.  Ten minutes later the first of four 15- to 20-foot-high waves pounded the shore and surged inland, destroying everything in their path.

Alerted to the disaster, Scientologists from Sydney, Australia, flew to the devastated island.  There, they joined a team of Samoans who trained to be Volunteer Ministers in 2008 when the Scientology Volunteer Ministers South Pacific Goodwill Tour was in that country. They are working together to help local officials provide basic services for several thousand survivors living in emergency shelters since the disaster occurred.

The Scientology Volunteer Ministers have set up their bright yellow tent as a headquarters for their relief activities.  There, at shelters and in villages throughout the island, they provide Scientology Assists—simple procedures developed by Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard that help people recover from the emotional and spiritual effects of trauma, illness and injury.

“Our Scientology Assists are the ’spiritual first-aid’ people need in a disaster,” said Mathew Andrews, leader of the Scientology Volunteer Ministers South Pacific Goodwill Tour who is coordinating the Volunteer Ministers disaster relief in Samoa.  “People who are grieving, in pain or fixated on the tragedy become extroverted and bright and start planning again for the future.  We helped a man who was in pain, struggling to walk.  Today we saw him in town.  He was smiling and walking easily and came up to me to shake my hand.”

For more information or to join the relief effort in Samoa contact the Volunteer Ministers Consultant at [email protected].  To learn more about the Scientology Volunteer Ministers program visit their web site at www.volunteerministers.org .

Samoa Has a Well Developed Tourist Infrastructure

Traditional Western Samoa has the broadest holiday appeal with gorgeous beaches, lots of stunning waterfalls, volcanic craters and lava tubes, rain forest canopy walks, blowholes and some lovely Polynesian villages with a truly laid back atmosphere.

With so many scenic wonders, Samoa has a well developed tourist infrastructure. Upolu is the main island with the capital town of Apia, although it is smaller than neighbouring Savaii, just 10 miles to the west. Both islands are volcanic in nature and covered in tropical rainforest, with lots of volcanic peaks rising in the interiors, the highest point on Upolu being Mount Fito at 1158m and on Savaii, My Silisili rises to 1880m.

Neighbouring America Samoa, has been a dependent State of the USA since 1899. Its largest island of Tutuila lies just 60 miles to the south east of Upolu, and is considerably smaller in size than either Upolu or Savaii. It has a surprisingly limited tourist infrastructure catering mostly to businessmen, locals visiting from abroad and the occasional eco tourist enthusiast seeking out its rich tropical rain forest and archaeological sites. Tutuila boasts the beautiful harbour setting of its capital Pago Pago Town and a wild and beautiful coastline with virgin rain forest. There are three stunning islands in the Manua Group, 60 miles further east, with high sea cliffs and gorgeous beaches, and even more remote are the tiny Rose Atoll and Swains Island.

Compared to its South Pacific neighbours of Fiji, the Cook Islands and Tahiti, life is extremely traditional and lack commercial tourism or large international hotels. There are just a handful of small beach resorts along the south and west coast of Upolu and youll find plenty of quaint beach bungalows all around the islands, each one with thatch roofs and coconut fronds as walls and most operated by local families on traditional village land.

Apia Town is the main centre of tourism and makes a good base for exploring Upolu and is the departure point for travellers to both Savaii and Tutuila. This is where travellers spend at least their first few nights and there are several fine hotels and plenty of budget inns for accommodation.

Overall, this is the ideal choice for both matured discerning travellers and young backpackers wanting to escape the more commercial South Pacific neighbours and experience a traditional culture, secluded beaches, stunning coastal scenery and lush tropical rain forests. Travel now.

The islands of Samoa are emerging as an exciting new South Pacific travel destination between Hawaii and New Zealand. This “Heart of Polynesia” is politically split into two distinct entities 80 miles apart. The country Samoa is a former German colony, captured by New Zealand in 1914 and granted independence in 1962. In 1997 the name was changed from Western Samoa to Samoa.

American Samoa is the only U.S. territory south of the equator. Annexed by the United States for use as a naval base in 1900, the territory no longer has any military significance. Instead, Pago Pago currently hosts the StarKist and “Chicken of the Sea” tuna canneries, making it the most important commercial fishing port under the American flag.

The Samoan environment is tropically lush, with green volcanic peaks plunging to brilliant coral reefs, an ecotourism paradise still unspoiled by mass tourism. Visitors often stay in open Samoan beach houses called fale (pronounced FAH-lay) and adopt the laidback local lifestyle. Swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking, surfing, deep sea fishing, and hiking opportunities are all close at hand.

Samoan culture is alive and strong, and local traditions can add another fascinating layer to your travel experience. Most Samoans are subsistence farmers who reside in small villages governed by chiefs (matai). The egalitarian ideals of this communal society place loyalty to family and religion above all. Visitors can sample this culture at the weekly “fiafia” island night dance shows staged at most of the larger hotels and beach resorts. Buffets of authentic Samoan dishes are an essential part of these events.

Samoa’s climate is sultry, alternately sunny and rainy, but always hot and humid. Cooling sea breezes make the shoreline the best place to be year-round. The nicest months weather-wise are May to September, “winter” south of the equator. The rainy season runs from November to April, with increasingly intense hurricanes sweeping in due to global warming. Yet you can get long spells of bright sunny weather even during the “rainy” season, and Samoa’s excellent Vailima beer (created by German brewmasters) tastes best at this time of year.

Most visitors spend their time in independent Samoa, which is considerably bigger and less expensive than American Samoa. However the rugged scenic beauty of Tutuila, the main island of American Samoa, should not be missed. In recent years some of the most strikingly beautiful parts of the territory have been incorporated into American Samoa National Park. There’s great hiking on Tutuila and wonderful snorkeling on Ofu in the seldom visited Manua Group.

Traditional Samoan culture is largely based on oratory, and it’s no accident that several literary legends originated here. Robert Louis Stevenson spent the last five years of his life in Samoa and is buried on a hilltop above Apia, the capital. His mansion is now a museum dedicated to the author. Somerset Maugham’s short story “Rain” about Sadie Thompson and the repressed missionary thrown together in a guesthouse at Pago Pago, American Samoa, has been adapted by Hollywood several times. The original guesthouse still exists, now an upscale restaurant and inn. In “Tales of the South Pacific,” James A. Michener based the prototype of his character Bloody Mary on an Apia hotelkeeper named Aggie Grey, whose family still operates Samoa’s largest resorts. Michener’s book was later made into the musical “South Pacific.”

Getting to Samoa is easy with direct flights from Hawaii and Los Angeles on Hawaiian Airlines, Polynesian Airlines, and Air New Zealand. Local ferries and small commuter planes ply frequently between the islands, and getting around by public bus or rental car is no challenge. Visas are not required by most visitors for entry to either Samoa, although a passport and onward plane ticket are mandatory.

Samoa, Heart of Polynesia

The islands of Samoa are emerging as an exciting new South Pacific travel destination between Hawaii and New Zealand. This “Heart of Polynesia” is politically split into two distinct entities 80 miles apart. The country Samoa is a former German colony, captured by New Zealand in 1914 and granted independence in 1962. In 1997 the name was changed from Western Samoa to Samoa.American Samoa is the only U.S. territory south of the equator. Swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking, surfing, deep sea fishing, and hiking opportunities are all close at hand.Samoan culture is alive and strong, and local traditions can add another fascinating layer to your travel experience.

Cooling sea breezes make the shoreline the best place to be yearround. The nicest months weatherwise are May to September, “winter” south of the equator. There’s great hiking on Tutuila and wonderful snorkeling on Ofu in the seldom visited Manua Group.Traditional Samoan culture is largely based on oratory, and it’s no accident that several literary legends originated here. Michener’s book was later made into the musical “South Pacific.”Getting to Samoa is easy with direct flights from Hawaii and Los Angeles on Hawaiian Airlines, Polynesian Airlines, and Air New Zealand. Local ferries and small commuter planes ply frequently between the islands, and getting around by public bus or rental car is no challenge. Visas are not required by most visitors for entry to either Samoa, although a passport and onward plane ticket are mandatory. David Stanley is the author of Moon Handbooks South Pacific http://www.southpacific.org/pacific.html which has a chapter on Samoa. Samoa: A South Pacific Heaven

Have you ever thought about what life could be like on an island? Do you dream of a South Pacific island paradise experience? Read on and discover the beauty and charm of Samoa.

Located in the heart of the pacific – Samoa is a group of four main islands. The islands are situated about halfway between New Zealand and Hawaii. It’s a tropical climate with an average temperature of about 72 degrees Fahrenheit. This area is warm all year round but often rains between November and April.

One of the main attractions in Samoa is the crystal blue warm water. It’s so beautiful and teeming with all kinds of exotic fish life. If you are a nature lover then this is the ideal holiday destination for you. There are many kinds of exotic wildlife that cannot be found anywhere else in the world.

Samoa has a history rich with folklore and myth. The people speak one of the oldest forms of Polynesian and many speak English.

There are four main islands – but due to their closeness it’s pretty easy to get around. Ta’u, Ofu, Olesseg, and Tutuila. The islands also have good roads and you should consider renting a bike and cycling around the islands. It a great way to get around and the islands aren’t too big.

Divers, snorkelers, nature lovers, hikers, and surfers will find Samoa a paradise for their needs. There are some world class spots here. You might even catch Kelly Slater catching a quiet wave in this modest little surfing Mecca.

There are well over 800 species of exotic fish and 200 species of coral. The ocean is teeming with beauty and if you are an avid snorkeler you will want to visit Ofu. The beach sand is unique and super-fine coral sand.

The islands also have a national Park which is on Tau. You will need a guide to go into some of the more remote areas. Its relatively simple to find a guide, just ask at the National Park offices and be sure to bring good shoes because you are in for a walk! There are beautiful volcanic areas you can explore with your guide so be sure to ask.

Saua is considered to be the birthplace of Polynesian people and is well worth a visit. You can drive to Saua with a rented car.
Ok so you are convinced – a Samoan holiday is where you are headed – what kinds of things do you need to know about the people before you go?

They are a modest people and have a different attitude towards dress. It is respectful; to cover most of your body while you are there; dress modestly rather than risking offending the locals.

If you are lucky enough to be invited into a traditional home you need to sit down on the floor before you eat or talk. Cover your legs – it’s considered rude to leave your legs exposed.

Polynesians are typically very welcoming people. They know how to treat tourists. A large part of their economy relies on tourism and you are treated hospitably wherever you go. As with any destination it’s good to know a bit about what might be considered rude in different cultures.

Don’t take pictures without asking it’s considered a sign of respect to ask before taking pictures.  Sunday in Samoa is considered to be a day of rest and this is strictly observed. Some activities, such as swimming, might not be allowed. Try to be sensitive to their beliefs and ask if in doubt. Villagers pray and if you are lucky you might even be invited to join in. If you enter a village during this prayer time, its called sa it is important to stop what you are doing and be quiet until it is finished.

If you are looking for a picturesque holiday with plenty to see and do; then this Samoan paradise is for you. It makes for a great holiday!
