If you fly directly east from northern Queensland for 2500 kilometres, you will be over Fiji. Looking down, you would see more than 800 islands – some large enough to hold thousands of people, others are very small. About 100 of these island are inhabited. If you flew down to 1323 metres while over the island of Viti Levu, you might hit the top of Tomanivi, Fiji’s highest peak. South-east of Tomanivi is Suva, the capital of Fiji. Main cities include Nadi, Sigatoka and Lautoka on Viti Levu and Labasa and Savusavu on Vanua Levu.

Fiji was populated for more than 3000 years before contact with white people. Most people living in Fiji had come from other islands in Melanesia, although some came from Polynesia and Micronesia. Villages developed their own traditions and language. Although the Dutch visited Fiji in the 1600s, regular visits from Europeans did not begin until traders and missionaries made contact with the Fijians in the early eighteenth century. This delay was partly due to the reputation of Fijians as ruthless cannibals.

In 1874, Fiji was declared a British colony. The British brought to Fiji many thousands of Indian labourers to work on the sugar cane. Indigenous Fijians resented so many non-Fijians settling in their land, and the British government introduced laws that banned non-Fijians from owning land. Fiji became an independent country on 10 October 1970 with a system of government based on that of Britain.

About 800 000 people live in Fiji. The nearest Australian city in size is Adelaide, with a population of 1050 000 people. Three-quarters of the population live on the island of Viti Levu. Indigenous Fijians make up about 50 per cent of the population, with Indian Fijians accounting for 45 percent. The remaining five per cent are of European or Chinese or people from other Pacific Islands.

Most Fijians live in rural areas, but the number of people migrating to the cities has increased. Life for indigenous Fijians in rural areas revolves around their village. Each village has a chief, who is usually a man. The way of life in the villages is communal, with everybody helping everyone else. Indigenous Fijians speak Fijian and English.

Indian Fijians speak Fijian Hindi and English. Although most Indian Fijian families have lived in Fiji for many generations, their culture remains similar to families in India. Women wear saris, and most marriages are organised by parents when their children are young.

Fiji, like Australia, has a high literacy rate. About 90 per cent of Fijians can read and write (in Australia, it is 98 per cent). However, unlike Australia, education is not compulsory in Fiji, but it is encouraged. The government pays for children to attend, school until year nine, then fees must be paid by students’ families. Most schools are run by religious or community organisations. Fiji also has the University of the South Pacific and the Fiji School of Medicine.

Most Fijians work on the land, and the main crops are sugar and coconuts. Fishing is a large part of Fiji’s agricultural sector. Gold mines also provide work and much-needed income for the country. Fiji’s most important industry is tourism, and many of Fiji’s tourists are Australian. In 1987 and 2000, military coups discouraged foreigners from visiting Fiji, which resulted in economic hardship.

Fiji’s major attractions are its natural attributes: the sea, the highlands and the islands. Most visitors to Fiji go to enjoy the beaches, with diving and snorkelling being popular pastimes. The Mamanuca group of islands, off the west coast of Viti Levu, have some of the country’s most beautiful beaches. The Abaca Cultural and Recreational Park, north-east of Nadi, contains waterfalls, rainforests and walking tracks that guide visitors through unimaginable beauty.

In 2000, George Spejght, an indigenous Fijian, led a coup against the Fijian Government. Speight and his followers kept Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry and other Politicians captive for more than three weeks before releasing them and forming their own government. Chaudhry is of Indian Fijian descent. Speight claimed he was representing indigenous Fijians who did not want Indian Fijians to have political rights. Speight was arrested, and power was given to a newly elected president.

To Go to an Expert Travel Agent or Directly to the Operator?

In our lifetimes we hopefully spend more on our travel wants and needs than on any other professional or expert in their chosen fields such as lawyers, accountants, plumbers, electricians, builders, dentists, doctors and we certainly choose them very carefully, so why not use the same quality control when choosing a travel agent. Also, as with our other experts, there may be different agents needed for different destinations and activities, so do not necessariy stay with one agent for all of your travel requirements unless of course the agency has different experts for different products and services.

South America, The All Year Holiday Destination

Edit Article |

If you’re looking to enjoy a holiday outside of the usual tourist seasons and are considering somewhere like South America, you could be worried that you won’t find the great experience you’re looking for – but you shouldn’t be. The continent of South America is an excellent holiday destination and, with a climate that varies greatly from the north to the south, one that can be enjoyed all year round. This bounteous land is packed with excitement and thrilling things to do and see, from the chance to take to the waters of the Amazon to tackle the peaks of Patagonia.

On the other hand, if you’re looking for somewhere to enjoy lively nightlife as well as days on the beaches, then somewhere like Brazil could be just what you’re looking for. South America is home to such a variety of attractions that you’re sure to find somewhere to suit, no matter what your preferred holiday style.

For example, surrounded by the Caribbean, South Pacific and South Atlantic Ocean, you can rest assured that there are many fantastic beaches to enjoy in South America. Brazil’s north-eastern region is particularly good for beaches, and if you’re hoping to see a truly amazing stretch of sand then El Agua in Venezuala is a must see.

If you’re after a cooler air and some adrenaline boosting activities, then skiing in South America’s Andes mountain range could be just the thrill for you. Best enjoyed during the summer months, the slopes of Argentina and Chile are ideal for any keen snowboarders or skiers who are hoping to enjoy an active holiday.

Activities that don’t involve snow are also easy to come by, including seeing many exotic animals up close on the Galapagos Islands of Ecuador or the national park of Bolivia. If you’re a history buff, you’ll love a trek to Machu Picchu in Peru, where you’ll find ancient Incan ruins, but if it’s a party atmosphere you’re in search of then a trip to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil or Buenos Aires in Argentina is sure to satisfy.

One of the best things about South America is something that lasts the whole year – its musicality and welcoming atmosphere. The continent is home to many musical styles, but what all of the countries share is a lively spirit and the willingness to include travellers. Those booking flights to South America are sure to find a fabulous holiday waiting for them, whatever time of year they are travelling.

If you want to get the best out of your trip, you should check out the available Australia escorted tours. There are many itineraries available, ranging from rail tours to wildlife tours. Australia is a diverse land with beaches, snow-capped mountains, rain forests, rivers, and much much more. The outback is a vast wilderness with animals such as emus, koalas, kangaroos, and dingoes living in their natural habitat.

There are also plenty of cities to visit if you’d prefer a cosmopolitan experience. If you choose a luxury tour, you can expect to dine in the finest restaurants in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Perth. You may want to make New Zealand a part of your journey so that you can experience everything that the South Pacific has to offer.

Ideally, your holiday should last for at least two weeks, so that you will have enough time to explore different places. Here are a few activities you may want to do during your stay:

• A scenic drive through the Outback
• Explore the Sydney Harbour and Opera House
• Relax in tropical North Queensland
• Visit the Great Barrier Reef near Cairns
• Go sightseeing in Australia’s biggest cities
• A fun-filled day at Bondi Beach

And, of course, if you have the time and money, you can choose an itinerary that includes activities in New Zealand.

Escorted tours in Australia are available all year round. The rates are usually lower during the spring months. On an escorted luxury tour, you can expect to receive luggage service for the entirety of your trip! All of the “little” things will be taken care of so that your holiday will be free from any stress.

Your tour can begin before you even fly to Australia! You can arrange to meet your escort right there at the airport. Should you want to do your own thing, all you have to do is request some free time. A good luxury tour company will help you plan out your trip. As for accommodation, some of the finest hotels in the South Pacific work with luxury escort companies. You can trust that your every need will be taken care of, no matter which type of excursions you choose.

Before you book with any escorted tour company that offers holidays to Australia, make sure that you understand exactly what the package includes and excludes. For instance, some companies include airport taxes in their pricing and some do not. Some packages include daily meals and some exclude them. You need to know for which services or taxes you will be responsible ahead of time so that you can be prepared for any additional costs.

Browse a selection of luxury escorted tours from a reputable online company to find the best Australia escorted tours for you and your family.

Many people from all over the world strongly believe their lives will not be complete in any year without embarking on traveling expedition. This trend is responsible for the bubbling, multi-billion dollars traveling, and hospitality and tourism industry. From January to December, holiday lovers and tourists are constantly moving from their stations to visit other destinations in order to observe new places, snap photographs and generally make new discoveries of interest. Some families love excursions; and there are those who can almost give up human close ties’ just to experience new sights. Fiji Island Holiday the Beauty of the South Pacific

Fiji Island Holiday conjures up all sorts of images in the mind, imagine sitting by the pool with the warm sun beating down on you while enjoying a fresh island cocktail that’s just been served to you. Well that is what a Fiji Island Holiday has to offer and plenty more.

Fiji Island Resorts range in price and capacity while new ones are being developed all the time to give you a taste of Fiji Real Estate. There are a number of great new back packer facilities ranging from all the inclusive meal and bed packages or others that have their own amenities and cooking facilities.

There is plenty to do if you don’t want to spend your time lounging around the pool. Fiji has wonderful diving or if you are not interested in Fiji Scuba Diving or going under with a tank on your back, there are plenty of terrific snorkelling in Fiji. You can discover the magical world under the sea, the beautiful coral reefs, and the brightly coloured tropical fish swimming around you. If you want to get up close and personal, you could try to feed the fish while snorkelling the fish seem to come from miles and surround you in an amazing oasis of Fiji colours.

You could stay on one of the many exotic beautiful Fiji Island Resorts or you could take a day trip to one and make the most of an Island Hopping boat trip. This is a great way to see different resorts and islands, maybe even finding a new place to stay on your next trip.

Fiji is also very popular with the yachting fraternity, it is a great spot to stop and spend some time exploring the Islands between New Zealand and Australia. The yachties are great fun and sure know how to party and have a fun time. One of the most popular Yachting destinations in Fiji is Musket Cove marina.

Many of the resorts also have other water sports available, windsurfing, hobby cat and water skiing to name a few. There are also a number of Fiji Island Resorts that focus around children, providing a kids club, so mum and dad can have a true break – drop the kids off in the morning and collect them again in the late afternoon to hear all about their days adventures, what they have made and learn about all there new friends. A very popular thing children love to do is to get their hair braided and you always see kids at the airport on the way home with their hair with colourful beads and braids.

Another popular activity is surfing. Fiji is well known for a couple of surf breaks and even has specific surfing resorts which host the international events which has drawn huge public attention.

You could also jump in a local cab and explore the mainland and townships. A must do is taking a trip to the local veg markets, such a great sight with all the veg stacked in neat piles selling for a dollar or two.

Maybe you have gone on Fiji Island Holiday to totally relax and wined down and catch up on some reading. If this is the case I am sure you will find yourself at a Fiji resort and Spa receiving a sensational Fiji Massage.

Some people find a cruise is more their thing and Fiji has a couple of companies that provide excellent services with small boats holding less people but giving you fantastic service that is more personal. You have the best of both worlds, getting to see plenty of Islands, snorkelling locations and relaxing at the same time, a great idea for your honeymoon. Plenty of people choose Fiji to tie the knot, having a barefoot beach side wedding.
