Scientology Volunteer Ministers Help Samoa Recover from Tsunami

Edit Article |

Posted: Oct 10, 2009 |

]]>

A team of Scientology Volunteer Ministers is helping Samoa recover from the tsunami that hit the island early Tuesday, September 29.  The tidal waves carried entire villages out to sea and killed at least 140.

An 8.0 earthquake 120 miles off the coast jolted people awake in Samoa at 6:48 that morning.  Ten minutes later the first of four 15- to 20-foot-high waves pounded the shore and surged inland, destroying everything in their path.

Alerted to the disaster, Scientologists from Sydney, Australia, flew to the devastated island.  There, they joined a team of Samoans who trained to be Volunteer Ministers in 2008 when the Scientology Volunteer Ministers South Pacific Goodwill Tour was in that country. They are working together to help local officials provide basic services for several thousand survivors living in emergency shelters since the disaster occurred.

The Scientology Volunteer Ministers have set up their bright yellow tent as a headquarters for their relief activities.  There, at shelters and in villages throughout the island, they provide Scientology Assists—simple procedures developed by Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard that help people recover from the emotional and spiritual effects of trauma, illness and injury.

“Our Scientology Assists are the ’spiritual first-aid’ people need in a disaster,” said Mathew Andrews, leader of the Scientology Volunteer Ministers South Pacific Goodwill Tour who is coordinating the Volunteer Ministers disaster relief in Samoa.  “People who are grieving, in pain or fixated on the tragedy become extroverted and bright and start planning again for the future.  We helped a man who was in pain, struggling to walk.  Today we saw him in town.  He was smiling and walking easily and came up to me to shake my hand.”

For more information or to join the relief effort in Samoa contact the Volunteer Ministers Consultant at [email protected].  To learn more about the Scientology Volunteer Ministers program visit their web site at www.volunteerministers.org .

Volunteering in Chile can be an amazing learning experience, one that you are unlikely to forget. Pretty much isolated from the rest of the world.

Chile’s natural barriers such as the most arid desert in the world, the Andes Mountain range, the Pacific Ocean, and the ice fields in Southern Patagonia, offers such a tremendous amount of diversity to this extended and thin country that it’s considered as the jewel of South American continent.

Much loved and popular, it is said that in Chile you are never too far from the sea, the mountains, or the desert. Currently, on an economic fast track, Chile is now experiencing a newer and improved socioeconomic stability as compared to the other South American countries.

However, this capitalistic approach has ended up widening the gap between the economically richer and poorer sections of the society. As a volunteer to Chile, you will have many opportunities to do something really worthwhile as you travel from one city to another, helping people to gaining emotional, financial, and physical independence.

Why Volunteer In Chile

With 5,000 kms of South Pacific coastline, Chile is a wonderfully blessed with pristine beaches, and plenty of tourist activity. Furthermore, Chile can also lay claim to some portion of Antarctica and if these reasons are not enough for you for volunteering in Chile then consider this.

Across the nation, there are several NGOs that are willing to accept you as volunteer to help them in their attempts to improve housing for the poor, provide assistance for academic development, work with drug addicts, offer expertise at medical health centers, and show compassion towards the homeless and much more.

Why not take a year’s gap to volunteer in Chile as well as travel this country, which is a contradiction and reflection of global landscapes?

Types Of Projects Available in Chile

For those of you who find volunteering in Chile a challenge as well as an opportunity to contribute to the society in a solid way, Chile volunteering projects come in varied types demanding different levels of skills.

Whether you enjoy working with drug abusers, for have a passion for languages, or want to teach children and make them better adults, or work to improve the position of women in the society, or perhaps, you are a die-hard animal lover and want to do your bit to improve the apathetical outlook of people towards them; you will most certainly find volunteering in Chile personally satisfying.

Community Welfare programs: Volunteering in Chile for community welfare programs include delivering food for homeless people, doing social work in poor communities, teaching at various education centers, taking care of children at day care centers, assisting the homeless and terminally ill patients, etc.

Education programs: Assisting as a teacher in rural schools will offer you the opportunities to teach the locals various subjects such as Math, Science, geography, history, even crafts, arts, knitting, etc.

Teach English programs: If you can also teach conversational English to children, women, and adults thus, helping them to make the best of global opportunities, which demand knowledge in English language.

As a volunteer in Chile on this project, you will work with teenaged children who are currently in youth shelters due to sexual abuse, neglect, or abandoned by their family. These shelters give children a safe place to study, live, and develop.

Building Homes programs: As a volunteer in Chile for building and repairing homes/buildings project, you get the opportunity to leave an indelible mark of your contribution.

You can help build homes or help repair existing homes, build educational set-ups for underprivileged families and orphans. Such kind of volunteering in Chile programs help you build lasting relationships at the personal level with the locals. Of course, if you have similar knowledge that a huge plus!

Conservation program: A broad term, conservation is applicable to environmental conservation as well as architecture and natural heritage conservation. While most volunteering in Chile conservation projects includes animal conservation such as animal rehabilitation centers, or reserves, you can also participate in breeding and rehabilitation of specific spices of animals.

Volunteering in Chile Requirements

1. No experience or qualifications required

2. Must be 18 or over 18 years of age

3. Should be free from all health problems

Fee and Other details

Every project has a fee attached, which is taken in advance and used for providing food, accommodation, comprehensive travel insurance, in-country travel, fund raising ideas etc.

Conclusion

Leave a never to be forgotten mark on the world map by volunteering in Chile!

Volunteering with turtles is part of a vital international sea turtle conservation program that will take you to the turquoise water and golden sands of Moso Island in the South Pacific, Vanuatu, previously voted the Happiest Place on Earth by the New Economic Foundation. In addition to providing you the opportunity to help save sea turtles, this grassroots effort also gives you the chance to engage in many other activities that occur in the village, such as reef surveying, teaching at the village school, and cooking local food. In your spare time you can snorkel on tropical reefs and learn to dive or just sit and storian with your new friends in the village!

Highlights

Contribute research to the turtle conservation efforts
Observe nesting turtles and hatchlings, a rare experience
Explore the stunning island’s beaches and forests
Expand awareness about the importance of the conservation projects
Help local teachers in schools (and enjoy the children!)
Experience a unique culture
Accomodations

Shared bungalows with single beds, bucket flush toilets and bucket showers, a dining hall/common room for meals and hanging out. All meals are prepared for by members of the community.

Duration

4, 8, or 12 – week options

Sustainable Elements
The surveys of turtles’ nesting beaches that volunteers conduct are a vital part of the conservation efforts of these communities, without which the communities would lose funding and staffing to continue the surveys, resulting in loss of conservation efforts
The money that the local populace receives from volunteers provides a small income to many people in the village who would otherwise not have one
Cost

From ,500 – ,000. Price includes all accommodations, meals, airport transfers, training, material and equipment.

Scientology Volunteer Ministers Target Drug and Alcohol Abuse in the South Pacific

A Scientology Volunteer Ministers Goodwill Tour is targeting drug and alcohol abuse in Tonga, an island nation near Samoa in the South Pacific.

In an interview with Radio Tonga News on the island of Tongatapu, Mathew Andrews, the leader of the South Pacific team, explained that the tour concentrates on providing services to address the precise problems that exist in the countries they visit. With drug and alcohol abuse among Tonga’s youth a critical concern to officials, non-profit groups and individuals, the tour will be providing workshops to combat this substance abuse and addiction.

The Scientology Volunteer Ministers will also offer seminars and courses in conflict resolution and natural disaster emergency preparedness—subjects that have proven popular throughout the South Pacific countries the tour has thus far visited.

Demand also runs high throughout the region for training in the study technology developed by Scientology founder, L. Ron Hubbard.  The tour recently held a training session for students and teachers in one of the colleges on Tongatapu.  “Thank you for this very important program,” wrote one teacher who completed this training.  He went on to state that the program enabled him to “solve problems of teaching and learning on the part of the students.”

Another teacher wrote, “I would suggest that all teachers who are so-called quality teachers should have this in mind where they are teaching. Many teachers tend to use corporal punishment,” he continued, “due to the lack of strategies or methods on the part of the teacher.”

The Goodwill Tour also provides workshops on how to improve communication skills, and training in Scientology Assists, a technology that addresses the mental and spiritual aspects of a person’s physical difficulties.

Having already provided similar guidance and training in Fiji and Samoa, the Scientology Volunteer Ministers South Pacific Goodwill Tours will be in Tonga for three months before continuing on to Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands.

Scientology Volunteer Ministers South Pacific Goodwill Tour in the Village of Pangaimotu

When the Scientology Volunteer Ministers South Pacific Goodwill tour moved their operation to the island of Vava’u last month, residents of the village of Pangaimotu heard about their work through radio and TV broadcasts and invited the volunteers to come to their island to deliver a workshop.

Pangaimotu is the name of a village and an island a half hour by boat from the capital of the Vava’u district of Tonga.  The Town Officer welcomed the Scientologists to the village and found them a hall in a local church where they could deliver their workshop. Then he brought them to visit each of the 185 houses in the village to invite every family to attend.

While walking through the village, one of the couples they met thanked the Scientologists for helping them through a very rough period in their lives. The volunteers were surprised and the couple explained that a short while earlier, they had picked up some of the Volunteer Minister booklets when the Goodwill Tour was in Nuku’alofa, the capital of Tonga. Then, when trouble struck, the couple had the solutions they needed, to pull them through the crises they experienced.

Just as the Scientologists were about to begin presenting the workshop, a baby in the audience began to cry.  The Scientology Volunteer Ministers showed those attending a simple technique anyone can use to help someone calm down.  L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of the Scientology religion, developed a body of technology called Scientology “Assists.” An assist is a Scientology process that alleviates present time discomforts or difficulties. The particular assist the Scientology Volunteer Ministers demonstrated is called a “Locational Assist.”  Easy to learn and do, a locational is done by directing a person’s attention off the painful area of his body or his difficulties and out onto the environment. When the parents used it, the child immediately stopped crying and became cheerful again.

Carrying on with the agenda they had planned, the Scientologists then covered techniques to improve the ability to learn, communicate and resolve conflicts.

Having attended the workshop, the people of the village of Pangaimotu understand why the motto of the Scientology Volunteer Ministers is “Something CAN be done about it”, and they now have tools they can use to improve their lives.

Linda Wieland writes for the Scientology Press Office in Los Angeles, CA.

Scientology Volunteer Ministers South Pacific Goodwill Tour Welcomed to the Island of Vava’u

Traditional ceremony and ritual opened the Scientology Volunteer Ministers Goodwill Tour on the Island of Vava’u in the kingdom of Tonga.

The Scientology Volunteer Ministers South Pacific Goodwill Tour is continuing its work in the Kingdom of Tonga, with a grand opening on the island of Vava’u.  Tonga is an archipelago of 169 islands one-third of the way between New Zealand and Hawaii.

Local performers welcomed the Scientology Volunteer Ministers with a prayer and songs and the chief magistrate of the island, on behalf of the people of Vava’u, thanked the Scientology Volunteer Ministers for coming to their island.

A dancer performed the ‘Tulou kihe niu vakai’—a traditional greeting for honored guests and friends—before cutting the ribbon in front of the big yellow tent where the volunteers will provide courses, seminars and one-on-one help.

Having opened the tent in the capital city of Vava’u, the Scientology Volunteer Ministers are offering their services on a grassroots level by visiting the local villages.  The first place they went to was Talihau, a fitting first stop as its name means “to welcome the Chief,” coming from the days when any boat arriving from other islands would land and be welcomed by this village first.

The Scientology Volunteer Ministers began their visit to Tonga on the island of Tongatapu, where they found that drug and alcohol abuse were a major concern of the local officials and community leaders.  They provided drug-education lectures, using information in the Scientology Handbook which is based on the research of Scientology founder, L. Ron Hubbard.

Tonga is the third South Pacific nation of this goodwill tour, which began in Fiji and moved next to Samoa. On completing their work in Tonga, the Scientology Volunteer Ministers will move on to Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands.

Linda Wieland writes for the Scientology Press Office in Los Angeles, CA.
