Smaller Vessel Cruising With Cruise West

In spite of the economic downturn, mainstream cruising is still proving to be a solid choice for many vacationers. The year-over-year growth in bookings won’t be quite as robust this coming season, but that doesn’t mean no one will be cruising. Most cruise passengers are still drawn to the megaships that offer up the traditional itineraries like the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, the Mexican Riviera and Alaska.

But if you’re looking for an alternative to traditional cruises, a brave new world awaits. By comparison, only a relative few know about specialty cruises or small ship cruising. Yet there is a growing fascination and demand for these alternative cruising experiences.

Cruise lines like Seattle-based Cruise West offers the perfect antidote to big-ship, mainstream cruises. Here is a company with a fleet of 11 vessels that range in capacity between 40 and 148 passengers. Because each ship has been designed with a shallow draft, the vessels are able to sail into coves, inlets and inland waterways the larger ships simply can’t get to.

Even when the small vessels mirror the itineraries of the larger ships, the difference is night and day. On an Alaska cruise, for instance, it’s the difference between spotting a grizzly on shore through powerful binoculars versus practically nuzzling up to the giant beast as your motor vessel pulls to within a few feet of the shoreline. This is the intimacy of the small ship cruise experience, an experience that permits an extraordinarily up-close view of scenery and wildlife, and a much more personal connection to the villages and people you’re likely to meet along the way.

In the beginning, Cruise West focused on the Pacific Northwest and Alaska but they have diversified considerably since their first cruise in 1990. Even though several vessels in their fleet still offer an Alaskan experience that is nothing short of spectacular, they have spread their wings to cover many other fascinating destinations. On the home front, they offer intriguing cruises along the Pacific Northwest’s Columbia and Snake Rivers, following in the footsteps of the great explorers, Lewis and Clark. And then there cruises for the whale-watching buffs that take in Mexico’s Sea of Cortés.

Further afield, cruises to Central America’s Panama and Costa Rica take in not only the flora and fauna of these countries brimming with the bounty of nature but also offering up opportunities to meet the indigenous Kuna Indians of Panama’s San Blais Islands.

Their flagship vessel, the Spirit of Oceanus, is an anomaly compared to the rest of their fleet. With a capacity of 120 guests, this is their first ocean-going vessel and is also their most luxurious. With fascinating itineraries that start at the Aleutian Islands at the top of the Pacific Ocean, it takes in seldom-traveled routes through Far East Russia, Japan, coastal China, and Vietnam before heading into Micronesia, Melanesia and Polynesia in the South Pacific. Cruises to the ultra unique Galápagos Islands and river cruises along Europe’s Danube; round out their greatly expanded repertoire of intriguing places to visit and explore.

If unique vessels and unique ports of call help define specialty cruises, one added feature helps to differentiate these kinds of cruises from the mainstream cruise vacation. That third attraction is cruise themes, and Cruise West excels at offering cruises with a special slant that will appeal to those who share a common affinity or interest. Photography cruises, for example, have become extremely popular and Cruise West has teamed up with Pentax to offer seven special itineraries where professional photographers accompany the cruise, offering their expertise and advice to seasoned and novice photographers alike.

A whole new world of pleasures and ports awaits when you sign up for a specialty cruise. So if you’re looking for something different, something quite unique for your next cruise vacation, consider a cruise on a small ship – the big alternative to big-box cruising. UNDERSEA earthquakes yesterday caused panic in the South Pacific, sending islanders fleeing to higher ground on fears of a second devastating tsunami in many weeks, but a series of waves proved to be tiny and harmless.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued a tsunami warning for the entire southwest Pacific, which included island resorts, Australia, New Zealand and Indonesia, after the quakes struck beneath the seas between Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands.

Hawaii and the Philippines, according to Reuters, were placed on tsunami watch. The centre cancelled its warning after three tsunamis, measuring up to 10 cm, were recorded in Vanuatu.

But with memories fresh of a tsunami last week that killed some 150 people in American Samoa and Samoa, many islanders panicked when the quake hit and tsunami warnings were issued.

“People were frightened and some ran out of the building onto the street because it was so strong,” Florence Cari, receptionist at Hotel Santo in Vanuatu, said.

A reporter at Vanuatu’s Daily Post newspaper said people on Espiritu Santo island ran for higher ground.

“We have had reports that the kids are running into the hills,” she said.

Some villagers in outlying islands in the Solomons reported tidal changes.

“People on the coastal areas have noticed a tide difference. The hospital is on alert,” a hospital spokesman on tiny Nendo island in southwest Solomon Islands said by telephone.

The tsunami warning centre issued its warning after two subsea quakes, one measuring 7.8 magnitude and the other 7.3. Late in the evening, the centre reported another 7 magnitude quake but ruled out a tsunami threat. No details were immediately available.

Moments before the morning quakes, a magnitude 6.7 tremor struck southeast of the Sulu archipelago of the Philippines, which is still mopping up from a typhoon that killed at least 22 people.

Indonesia’s port city, Padang, was hit by a 7.6 magnitude quake last week, killing 704 people and leaving 295 missing, but the health minister said the toll could reach 3,000.

Owing to its sun-kissed landscapes along stretches of prime beachfronts, Auckland well- deserves its title as the City of Sails. Spread out amidst the Manukau and Waitemata‘s picturesque ports the city is a hub of natural wonder with its cascading hills, lush rainforests and volcanic mountains. Home to the proud heritage of the Maori community, Auckland is a modern day metropolis that encompasses a mainly Polynesian, Asian and South Pacific islander population.

Renowned as one of New Zealand’s most popular holiday destination the locale offers a wide range of attractions such as Rangitoto Island, Auckland War Memorial Museum, the  Sky Tower, Kelly Tarlton’s Antarctic Encounter and Underwater World  as well as the iconic Auckland Harbour Bridge.

With some of the nation’s premier designer clothing outlets, Auckland is also a shopper’s paradise where one will be spoilt for choice. The trendy shop fronts along Queen Street and High Street, famed for their exclusive collections while the Ponsonby, Newmarket and Parnell boutiques are also available. Department store fanatics can hit the suburbs where Albany Westfield, St Lukes, Botany Downs and Sylvia Park are located in addition to the DFS Galleria.

Those who are looking for a bargain can do no better than Auckland’s quaint street markets where one finds not just an authentic Kiwi shopping experience but local goods galore. Dubbed Manukau’s premier attraction, Auckland’s Otara Market welcomes a staggering 5000 shoppers each Saturday with its impressive collections of art, jewellery, crafts, clothes, music and fresh produce. A fantastic display of Polynesian customs is not all that’s on offer at his bustling outdoor market as Asian, Pakeha, Pacific Island and Maori vendors line the colorful streets of the Otara Market in a melting pot of culture and vibrancy.

You can find anything from humorously captioned t-shits to conventional Tapa wear as well as quilts and   pacific island handicrafts alongside CD’s, jewels and fashionable attire. Stroll along the over 250 storefronts of the Otara Market while listening to the pulsating beats of Pacific Island music and the scintillating aromas of  Chinese pork buns, over-fresh rewana bread and Cook Island doughnuts.

A stunning collection of fresh flowers are also sold here while Chinese and Indian food stalls offering a myriad of scrumptious treats are also available. The finest fresh produce in Auckland also finds its way to this pleasant market where food connoisseurs are sure to find the ingredients for their next culinary masterpiece.

Having launched the career of  fashion houses such as Dawn Raid Streetwear who first set up shop at the Otara Market , this meandering, ever-growing bazaar is a bargain hunter’s dream come true as the best that Auckland has to offer is for sale here at a fraction of  the cost.

When it comes to luxurious Auckland hotels it is difficult to surpass The Langham Auckland. Ideally located, this comfortable Auckland hotel serves as the perfect base for holidaymakers and corporate travellers.

Mount Victoria – Rising Above Auckland’s North Shore

Auckland’s Mount Victoria volcano – thus named after Queen Victoria, is the highest volcano to rise within the North Shore. With lava ridges that cool down towards the waterfront in Davenport makes this volcano one worth paying a visit to. It erupted around 20,000 years ago and has had no activity since. At present the slopes of the volcano has been used to build tennis courts and concrete army bunkers as well as being used as a signal station for artillery placements and shipping.

If you are looking to make your way to New South Wales then it is important to know about the different regions and what they have to offer beforehand. This will help you to plan a better itinerary and consequently contribute to a much more pleasurable New South Wales travel experience.

The Blue Mountains is perhaps on the top of the list for tourists making their way to NSW. This is the ideal escape destination which serves as an excellent break from everyday hustle and bustle. If serenity and peace of mind is what you want then take a day trip to the Blue Mountains or perhaps even stay there for a couple of days in one of the many excellent hotels situated up there.

In recent years Byron Bay has acquired the status of being a must visit place of NSW. Again, this is one of those places where you can relax and unwind while getting the opportunity to engage in some water sporting activities as well.

Perhaps the most beautiful coastline landscapes lie in the Central Coast. Add to that the picturesque towns and quality accommodation and you will know why this place has become a tourist magnet. Visitors to this region will also have the opportunity to witness the Hinterland and its agricultural activities.

Central NSW is also a very beautiful region and the prime location for the agricultural activities of Australia. If you plan on taking a driving trip through New South Wales then make sure you cruise through this region.

For a totally different flavor of NSW make your way to the Coffs Harbor. Here you will have the beautiful warm turquoise waters of the South Pacific at your feet. Along with this you will have the opportunity to take a swim, dive or even surf on the water. Sailing and fishing opportunities are also available on the Coffs Harbor. The region is also home to a dense rainforest territory providing ecotourism opportunities to travelers.

A trip to NSW cannot be complete without visiting the picturesque Hunter Valley. Along with having some of the finest accommodation choices in the region you will have the opportunity to visit the Wollemi National Park and the Goulburn River. The Barrington Tops National Park is another major attraction of Hunter Valley.

Amongst the smaller areas that have started attracting the attention of tourists are Jindabyne, Lord Howe Island, Perisher, Selwyna and Smiggins. These are counted amongst the colder regions of New South Wales and serve as excellent snow destinations.

Last but not Least the wonderful city of Sydney with its world renowned Sydney Harbor, a dramatic cityscape and top notch accommodation is also counted amongst the top destinations of New South Wales.

General Knowledge Pt. XVIII

A vegivore is a person who craves or has a special fondness for vegetables. This need not be because the person has an aversion to eating meat but solely due to an intense craving for vegetables. To a vegivore, meat products may only seem like an accompaniment to add flavour to the dish. He/she will find the vegetable dish more satiating than the meat dish.

With a cruise vacation it is now more possible than ever to explore some of the most gorgeous and exotic locations across the globe. From the rivers of Europe to the islands of the South Pacific, the only restriction on where you can go is an accessible waterway.

The great thing about a cruise is that all the planning is done for you. There is no need to book multiple hotels and arrange for transportation between destinations because your transportation is your hotel!

Here are a few ideas for exciting cruises to beautiful places. Don’t be afraid to consider something that is a little off the beaten path. You never know what you might find there.

1. Australia/New Zealand Cruise

This exciting cruise departs from Sydney and sets sail off into the Pacific. One of the exciting features of this trip is a stop at the gorgeous Isle of Pines. This New Caledonian island is often called “l’ile la plus proche du paradis” which translates to “the closest island to paradise.” The Isle of Pines is primarily famous for the great snorkeling and scuba diving opportunities in its pristine lagoon.

Another destination on this tour is the capital city of New Caledonia, Noumea. This often-overlooked city has more days of sunshine than any other Pacific Island capital. This works out great because of all the city’s fantastic beaches! This cruise is a great way to see some gorgeous places that you probably never heard of before.

2. Europe/North Sea

Many European cruises take advantage of the waters of the Mediterranean, but this cruise departs from London and explores the cities of the North Sea!

After a stop in Brussels, you will set sail to Copenhagen, the capital and largest city of Denmark. This gorgeous and historical city has one of the best quality of life ratings of any city in the world. It is also incredibly environmentally friendly. Over a third of the city’s residents commute to work by bike and the water in the harbor is so clean you can swim in it!

This cruise also has stops in Helsinborg, Sweden and Oslo, Norway. It is truly an unbelievable opportunity to explore the diverse cities and people of the North Sea.

3. Europe/Mediterranean Cruise

Of course if you haven’t gone on a cruise of the Mediterranean, you should know that it is popular for a reason. The waters, sights, and people of the Mediterranean Sea are unlike anywhere else in the world.

This particular cruise leaves Malaga, Spain and has its first stop in the city of Ajaccio, Corsica. As the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte, this city is rich in history and ready to be explored.

Next it is off to the southern coast of France, specifically the Provence region. This area is renowned for its mild climate, music, food and wine. This short cruise packs in a great deal of beauty, history, and culture.

4. Mexican Riviera Cruise

Cruises of the Caribbean parts of Mexico are common, but vacationers are just now starting to rediscover the Pacific coast of Mexico. This cruise leaves San Diego and explores the Mexican Riviera.

One of the most exciting stops on this trip is the Mexican city of Mazatlan. The waters off the coast of this tropical city are renowned as amazing sport fishing territory. The city itself is a haven for cultural exploration.

There is a booming classical music scene and the main through street, the Calle Constitucion, is closed in the evenings on the weekends. This is so that natives and tourists alike can explore the arts, cuisine, and nightlife of the city center.

5. Alaska Cruise

Cruises of the Alaskan coast are a great way to see some gorgeous scenery. As a special treat, this cruise skirts the coast of the Hubbard Glacier, the longest tidewater glacier in Alaska.

The Alaskan town of Sitka is another highlight of the trip. Kayaking day trips are offered and they are a great way to get a closer look at Alaska’s dynamic coastline. Hiking trails are also abundant near Sitka. If you are looking for a cruise that is rife with outdoor opportunities, then you can’t go wrong with an Alaskan tour.

6. Asia Cruise

Cruises throughout the Indian Ocean are also becoming more popular. This cruise leaves Hong Kong and has its first stop at the island city of Sanya. This town has gorgeous tropical beaches and is actually the training ground for China’s beach volleyball team.

The town itself is full of exciting things to do and see. There is a butterfly museum, a shell aquarium, and an amazing 108-meter statue of Guan Yin. It is one of the tallest statues in the world and it took six years to complete. Sanya and the other destinations on this trip have ample opportunities for either relaxation or exploration.

7. Southern Caribbean Cruise

With more and more people discovering the joys of a cruise vacation, the number of destinations is growing as well. Even though the Caribbean has always been a big area for cruises, cruise companies are now branching off to explore new destinations within the Caribbean.

Castries, the capital of Saint Lucia, is one town that has greatly benefited from the tourism boom. When your ship docks there are taxis readily available to take you on tours of the city. You can even tour it on a water taxi! One of the most exciting sites in Castries is the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. It is the largest church in the Caribbean and a can’t miss on this trip!

The world is full of beautiful places, interesting people, and fascinating cultures. A cruise isn’t the only way to explore the world, but it is one of the easiest and most exciting ways to see places you’ve only dreamed of.
