French Polynesia Some Helpful Facts For The Visitor

]]>

Tahiti is south of the Equator, mid way between Los Angeles California, and Sydney Australia. It is in the same time zone as Hawaii.

The main languages spoken through French Polynesia are Tahitian and French.

You will find in the hotels and restaurants that English is spoken, however the local people do appreciate it when their guests at least make an attempt to learn a few of their words. They are very willing to teach anyone who is willing to learn, and they will do it with lots of smiles and big laughs.

In terms of entry requirements to French Polynesia, every visitor must have a return airline ticket to their home country or at least two more following destinations. In addition if required they must show evidence of sufficient funds to support themselves in French Polynesia.

For most visitors, who are tourists, you will need a passport that has six months to run, except US, Canadian, Australian, and New Zealanders where three months is sufficient.

The only exceptions to this, where visas are obligatory are tourists from Israel, Brazil, Venezuela, and Panama. In some other cases visas are required for stays of over one month, and in other cases over three months. To be safe you should make enquiries from your travel agent, or the French Consular office in your country. Always bear in mind that entry requirements are subject to change without notice, and it is the passenger’s responsibility to make sure that all documents needed are complete and current.

There are few health requirements for French Polynesia, and it is not a malaria area, but you should ensure your vaccination program is up to date, ensuring you visit your doctor at least five weeks before travelling. You are strongly advised to take out comprehensive travel insurance before leaving home. There are some outbreaks of dengue fever in Tahiti, so don’t travel without Deet, or some other mosquito repellent, and cover up at dawn and dusk.

The Law in French Polynesia is French law, so be aware that it is a criminal offence if you fail to offer assistance to a person in danger. This includes motor accidents, and any other occasion when a person is in danger, except if you would endanger yourself by offering assistance. If guilty you could be fined or be given a suspended prison sentence.

You must carry your passport at all times.

There are no sales taxes or hidden service charges in French Polynesia.

The currency is the Pacific French Franc[CFP], but bring traveller’s cheques rather than cash. Amex, Mastercard, and Visa are all accepted at all major establishments.

Finally prepare yourself for high costs as French Polynesia is 30 to 50% more expensive than most of the rest of the South Pacific

Costa Rica Holidays Guide

Edit Article |

Posted: Feb 26, 2011 |

]]>

Costa Rica is a true paradise on earth with hundreds of miles of white sand beaches and swaying palms, dense tropical forests rich in wildlife and lakes, rivers and streams abound. Costa Rica is reputed to have the happiest people on the planet; it is above any country in environment awareness and boasts one of the highest standards of living on earth. Costa Rica shares borders with Nicaragua to the north, Panama to the south with coasts on the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean.

For decades, Costa Rica has been a top choice destination for expatriates, retirees, adventurers and families to reside and live the good life. Costa Rica is also one of the major travel destinations on earth and thousands of visitors arrive each year to behold the many treasures the country has to offer. There are many direct flights from major hubs into San Jose, the capital city of Costa Rica and a network of commuter flights to all the provinces of the country.

Visitors to Costa Rica have varied and diverse interests; some come for the excellent scuba diving, others to sport fish. There are families on summer vacations, outdoorsmen and women exploring the wilderness and Costa Rica is a Valhalla for weddings and honeymoon vacation packages. With its many offerings, it is sometimes hard to decide where to go and where to stay.

The Guanacaste region on the north Pacific coast has seen a huge growth in tourism and has developed the area remarkably. Tamarindo is the hub for excellent accommodations with bed and breakfasts, condos, luxury resorts and budget lodging, great dining and a plethora of aquatic activities. Tamarindo offers some of the best sportfishing on earth and there are many dive sites.

The south Pacific region is a surfer’s paradise for beginners and experts alike, with beach, reef and river breaks and there are many jumping off spots to the interior. Along with resort beach accommodations there are jungle lodges, tent camps and inns. The area hosts national parks and biological reserves and trips into the rainforest are an unequaled experience.

The Caribbean side is less developed than the Pacific and has a tropical flair. The gin clear waters and coral reefs draw a handful of adventurers for the outrageous scuba diving, snorkeling and warm water sportfishing. Accommodations are less plentiful but the online hotels, lodges, bungalows and inns are well appointed and offer excellent service

Planning your First Cruise

Edit Article |

]]>

Planning your first holiday especially on a cruise liner is always a challenge. You could get together with your family and friends and discuss your travel and vacation plans so as to get a better idea of what needs to be done. The best way is to book with a travel agent who will not only advice you on which cruise liner and destination you should be going to but also plan your entire itinerary including air travel to the port of embarkation. But before you proceed, let’s first answer some questions that are bound to pop up while planning your cruise.

What kind of cruise is suitable for your age group?

Typically, there are different kinds of cruises suitable for different age groups. You will find a cruise designed for all individuals, from the toddler to the teen to the retired. All you need to decide in who is going and then select the cruise best suited for you. There are fun-filled holiday cruises for the family, singles, newly-weds and even for the slightly older and matured.

What kind of budget are you on?

Typically, the minimum cost of per person per day is about 0 on an average cruise liner. Many ships charge extra for certain items and of course air-fare is not included in this. You can decrease the cost somewhat by sharing the cabin with another person, booking way in advance, like almost six months prior, or taking a risk and booking late, less than two months prior to departure.

How many days can you spend on your cruise?

If you have less than a week, then the options would be closer to home and restricted to Mexico, Bahamas or simply a weekend cruise to a port in the ocean and back. A complete week gives you more time and options range from the Caribbean, Europe, Hawaii, Alaska and even the South Pacific, depending on of course your current residential location. Anything longer than that would be suitable for any kind of cruise vacation across the globe.

When would you be most likely to travel?

Obviously, cruise tickets are cheaper in leaner times like spring or fall and most expensive during the summer holidays. Winter is also considered high season when travelling to warmer locations like the Caribbean. Some locations like Alaska, Scandinavia and the Baltic have a shorter cruising season and will be open only between May and September. While Antarctic cruises are on between November and February, Mediterranean cruises can be taken all year round.

Where would you like to go?

With the earth being covered with 75% ocean, cruise ships today can reach any of the continents and traverse all across the globe. From the Americas to Austral-Asia, Africa to Antarctica, Bahamas to Bermuda, Europe to Canada, there are plenty of cruise destinations to choose from. Even land locked locations such as central Europe, Russia, or the Yangtze River in China can be reached on a river cruise. Always a challenge to decide your destination, it is important to keep all other factors like type of cruise, budget, length of vacation among others in mind.

What are your interests?

Although cruises provide all kinds of on board activities, your destination should be based on your interest. While European tours offer a good dose of culture for the history buffs, tropical destinations like the Caribbean and the South Pacific are for the beach lovers. Whether it is glacier watching in Alaska, deep sea diving in Australia or experiencing the fjords in Norway, you have to decide what you like to do best before you choose your cruise destination. Many cruises also offer a list of off-shore activities before you book, so make sure that you are well researched on that as well.

What kind of accommodation would you prefer?

Cabin selection typically depends on what your budget is. Sea view cabins are obviously more expensive than the lower deck ones. Also, if you are travelling to scenic places like Alaska or Scandinavia it would be preferable to have a view. Deck plans are available in hard copy, so make your decision after doing your homework and planning your budget.

What are your dress styles and eating habits?

In a move away from only formal wear, most cruise ships today are more relaxed and have only one or two nights of dress-up nights. The rest of the time, it is usually casual or country club style dressing. Typically there are two seating arrangements for dinner, one starting at 6:30pm and the other starting at 9:00pm. While early seating allows you plenty of time for late shows, it may rush your off shore excursions. Late seating on the other hand gives you time to relax but may hamper your late evening activities. Also, table seating is usually for four to eight persons and very rarely for two. If you do want a dinner for the twosome, you will have to make a prior request.

How do you get to the cruise ship?

Flying there or driving down if its close by are two of the most preferred options. Sometimes the cruise lines offer you a fly-cruise package, which is easier, but may be a trifle expensive than independent booking. These include transfers between the ship and the airport, which can again add up to the cost.

What are the documents needed?

Cruise vouchers and travel itineraries should typically reach you 2-3 weeks prior to your departure. Travel insurance is not mandatory but strongly advised as a carry along document in case of any mishaps. Passports are needed for all international destinations.

What is a Package Vacation?

Package vacations, by their very definition, are comprised of at least two but usually more components. Many travelers prefer to buy package vacations because each element is often discounted when bundled together. In addition to that, travel agencies work diligently to provide extras within package vacations that may not be available when services are purchased a la carte.

Costa Rica leaders have historically invested in the nations future by providing all that its citizens need to thwart poverty. The people have been able to profit from a thriving export business and creating a nation where those investing in Costa Rica also prosper.

The beautiful Costa Rica Land is more than just a vacation destination. It is also home to over four thousand people. Home for Costa Ricans is 32,000 miles of varied terrain that is landlocked to the north by Nicaragua and in the south by Panama, and lets not forget the Caribbean Sea as well as the Pacific Ocean.

The history of the nation 10,000 years long, marks its modern day founding in the mid 1500’s. the nation developed slowly until the late 1800’s, a strong government had been set up and politicians were making bold national policies. Implementing free primary and secondary education for all citizens and even abolishing the death penalty. Last century, Costa Rica became a democratic nation, woman and blacks were given the right to vote. The national military was disbanded and Costa Rica was declared itself neutral nation. The nation’s citizens also enjoy free health care.

Costa Rica land is rich providing the nation with a healthy export business in coffee and bananas. These resources have been used to the point where they are the foundation of much of the country’s economy. Costa Rica has a sizable income from tourism and the export of electronics, textiles exotic flowers and more. Costa Rica real estate is presently proving to be the country’s most sought after commodity. This is due to the fact that Costa Rican officials have been offering irresistible incentives to buyers investing in Costa Rica real estate along the coast as well as inland real estate in Costa Rica.

Tahiti? Why not?

The kids are grown and gone, the mortgage is paid off and it is winter! For the first time you are free to let reality and fantasy trade places with thoughts of lush faraway places. And now it’s your turn.

Staring at my bookshelf the other day, one volume stood out. “Mutiny On The Bounty”! A tale of sea going excitement and bravado through the breath taking South Pacific.

Ah, why not an adventure to the islands of French Polynesia, to Tahiti and the Society Islands. And what better way to do it than by modern cruise ship. The delightfully informal and un-regimented way of life emulated on board a luxury vessel!

Fortunately, the tribulations of Fletcher Christian and Captain Bligh will not accompany you on your journey. Radisson Seven Seas Cruises, Windstar Cruises and Princess Cruises can be your passport to this place of exquisite passion and beauty.

Radisson’s m/s Paul Gauguin, named after one of France’s greatest painters, is dedicated to Tahiti and the surrounding islands where he spent much of his most productive years. In fact, Gauguin is quoted as saying, “I have come to an unalterable decision – to go and live forever in Polynesia”.

In the 1890’s, it took Paul Gauguin two months to reach Tahiti. Today you can reach your beautiful ship in just seven and a half hours from Los Angeles – only two more hours than flying to Hawaii.

A visit to the ship’s “Fare Tahiti Gallery”, filled with books and videos on the history and culture of Polynesia will introduce you to the islands’ colorful heritage. On board lecturers and exciting folklore shows featuring the arts of the islands are given on board to enhance your dream vacation. Each cruise will bring the post card beauty right to your cabin door.

You can experience an electrifying performance of ote’a – a complex line dance accompanied by drums telling the ancestral legends of the Polynesian people. Or, imagine yourself taking a lesson in the technique of paddling an outrigger canoe (it’s easy once you know the secret!)

The Tahitians, renowned for their health, physical beauty and spiritual serenity are more than familiar with the medicinal and cosmetic benefits of the plants and flowers of their islands and aboard the m/s Paul Gauguin you are offered an environment that is equally conducive to health, beauty and happiness.

The beautiful on board pool invites you to an early morning dip and the fitness center features a full range of exercise equipment and health spa to provide the spoiling you have waited so long to indulge in.

Imagine a ship, which is more your private yacht, hosting only 300 guests and taking you through the reefs of Tuamotu Archipelago, renowned for world class diving. The ship’s small size and shallow draft allows it to navigate shallow shimmering lagoons and narrow channels where larger vessels cannot go.

My favorite feature (in addition to the fine French cuisine and complimentary wines with dinner) is the specially designed, retractable water sports platform at the aft of the ship which takes you down to sea level to hop aboard a Windsurfer, launch a kayak, try a little water skiing or don snorkeling or scuba gear to explore underwater adventures in pristine waters.

Ready to eat! Did I mention that the m/s Paul Gauguin features French and continental fare with menus inspired by two-star Michelin chefs served in open dining, allowing you to eat and sit with whom you want, when you want and where you want. Not only do you have your choice of two elegant restaurants, but also an outdoor grill and 24 hour complimentary room service.

Your cabin is spacious and as relaxing as the gentle trade winds wafting through your open window. Freshly picked tropical flowers spill out of a vase competing for your gaze with the view from your private verandah.

In addition to Radisson, Princess Cruises offers 10-Day Polynesia/Cook Islands, and 10-day Polynesia/Marquesas Islands aboard the Tahitian Princess and 29-day Hawaii/Tahiti/South Pacific aboard the new Diamond Princess. Many of these Tahiti cruises have overnight stays at the ports of call!

Tahiti is my favorite part of this wonderful planet we call home. Now is the time for you to enjoy the sky and sea in harmony with the magnificent and sensuous sights of Bora Bora, Rangiroa, Raiatea, Moorea and the Marquesas, all inclusive, and you unpack only once and awake to find a new piece of paradise at your doorstep each morning.

Sailing the beautiful French Polynesian Islands is like stepping into one of Gauguin’s paintings, only better, because you’re free to move around.

Romantic Wedding Destination in French Polynesia

Wedding is once in a lifetime event for couples and hence should be celebrated in a unique way. A variety of options are open to you in order to make your wedding truly special. One of the best options would be to conduct your wedding in any of the incredible destinations outside your home country.

Among the wedding destinations, probably the best would be the French Polynesian Islands in the South Pacific. Better known by the name of its main island, Tahiti, French Polynesia is truly an amazing destination to exchange your marriage vows.

French Polynesia is an archipelago consisting of 118 islands, which are categorized into five island groups, such as, Society Islands, Tuamotu Islands, Marquisas Islands, Gambier Islands, and Austral Islands. Each of the islands found here is unique, and is especially noted for its picturesque surroundings consisting of palm fringed beaches, sparkling blue lagoons, rich flora and fauna, and the breathtaking turquoise sea. In short, Tahiti and its island are among the most romantic destinations on the planet.

The biggest as well as the main island in the French Polynesia, Tahiti in the Society group of islands is one of the most popular wedding destinations in the South Pacific. With its lush world consisting of dazzling waterfalls, soaring mountains, amazing plateaus, and pools, Tahiti provides a perfect base for weddings and honeymoons.

Bora Bora is yet another popular destination for weddings in French Polynesia, which is bestowed with towering volcanic peaks, lush green vegetation, and beautiful lagoons filled with rare as well as colorful fish and corals. To enjoy an authentic Polynesian wedding ceremony, a best destination would be Moorea, which is home to the much famed Tiki Village Cultural Center, a favored spot to perform traditional Polynesian royal weddings.

The Tiki Village provides options for three types of wedding ceremonies including the Princess Wedding, the Royal Wedding, and the Royal Deluxe Wedding. The Princess Wedding is complete with an exotic Tahitian village, the service of the village chief as well as the High priest to conduct the wedding ceremony, local musicians and dancers, beautiful crowns and garlands made of exotic flowers, photos of the ceremony, and a marriage certificate made of Tapa.

Included in the Royal Wedding packages are arrival of bride and groom from the hotel in a canoe, carrying of the couples by the Polynesian warriors in a royal chair on completion of the marriage ceremony, a romantic cruise on a royal canoe accompanied by musicians, and honeymoon night on a royal floating house. When comes to the Royal Deluxe Wedding, it combines all of the above, apart from a choir of Tahitian people singing during the wedding ceremony and a fabulous Tahitian dance show.

Popular wedding destinations in French Polynesia also include Rangiroa – the second largest atoll in the world. Situated in the Tuamotu Archipelago, Rangiroa boasts of stunning views comprising vast lagoon with stunning marine life. Qamea, Yasawa Islands, and Rarotonga, are the other great islands ideal for wedding functions, among many others are the sought after destinations for weddings.

No matter you have chosen which French Polynesian destination for your wedding, a traditional Polynesian ceremony is wonderful, unforgettable, and is considered a dream comes true. On the wedding day, the bride to be is treated like a princess, and the women of the village pamper her with aromatic flowers and Tahitian Monoi oils. Then dress her in Tahitian clothing. On the other hand, the groom is taken to a nearby beach to get tattooed. He is then dressed like a High Chief. After this, he returns the wedding spot. Mostly, the wedding ceremony is conducted in the Tahitian language, and there would be an interpreter to translate it to the couples. On the completion of the ceremony, champagne is served, which is followed by a wonderful Tahitian dance show.

However, weddings conducted in Tahiti are not legally recognized in the US. Hence, the United States residents interested in getting married here are recommended to have a legal ceremony in the US, and then come here to renew your marriage vows with a traditional Polynesian wedding ceremony. Further, there are certain requirements in order to get married in the Tahitian islands, such as at least one month of residency in French Polynesia prior to the marriage, birth certificates of both bride and groom, a copy of the notarized marriage contract, and celibacy certificate.

Many upscale resorts and hotels in French Polynesia offer superb packages for a memorable wedding. In most cases, the wedding packages are inclusive of assistance of a wedding planner to plan your wedding, traditional Tahitian wedding ceremony, a bottle of champagne, a sunset cruise, romantic dinner, and pictures of wedding ceremony taken by a professional photographer. These packages are also customized according to your specifications.
