If you fly directly east from northern Queensland for 2500 kilometres, you will be over Fiji. Looking down, you would see more than 800 islands – some large enough to hold thousands of people, others are very small. About 100 of these island are inhabited. If you flew down to 1323 metres while over the island of Viti Levu, you might hit the top of Tomanivi, Fiji’s highest peak. South-east of Tomanivi is Suva, the capital of Fiji. Main cities include Nadi, Sigatoka and Lautoka on Viti Levu and Labasa and Savusavu on Vanua Levu.

Fiji was populated for more than 3000 years before contact with white people. Most people living in Fiji had come from other islands in Melanesia, although some came from Polynesia and Micronesia. Villages developed their own traditions and language. Although the Dutch visited Fiji in the 1600s, regular visits from Europeans did not begin until traders and missionaries made contact with the Fijians in the early eighteenth century. This delay was partly due to the reputation of Fijians as ruthless cannibals.

In 1874, Fiji was declared a British colony. The British brought to Fiji many thousands of Indian labourers to work on the sugar cane. Indigenous Fijians resented so many non-Fijians settling in their land, and the British government introduced laws that banned non-Fijians from owning land. Fiji became an independent country on 10 October 1970 with a system of government based on that of Britain.

About 800 000 people live in Fiji. The nearest Australian city in size is Adelaide, with a population of 1050 000 people. Three-quarters of the population live on the island of Viti Levu. Indigenous Fijians make up about 50 per cent of the population, with Indian Fijians accounting for 45 percent. The remaining five per cent are of European or Chinese or people from other Pacific Islands.

Most Fijians live in rural areas, but the number of people migrating to the cities has increased. Life for indigenous Fijians in rural areas revolves around their village. Each village has a chief, who is usually a man. The way of life in the villages is communal, with everybody helping everyone else. Indigenous Fijians speak Fijian and English.

Indian Fijians speak Fijian Hindi and English. Although most Indian Fijian families have lived in Fiji for many generations, their culture remains similar to families in India. Women wear saris, and most marriages are organised by parents when their children are young.

Fiji, like Australia, has a high literacy rate. About 90 per cent of Fijians can read and write (in Australia, it is 98 per cent). However, unlike Australia, education is not compulsory in Fiji, but it is encouraged. The government pays for children to attend, school until year nine, then fees must be paid by students’ families. Most schools are run by religious or community organisations. Fiji also has the University of the South Pacific and the Fiji School of Medicine.

Most Fijians work on the land, and the main crops are sugar and coconuts. Fishing is a large part of Fiji’s agricultural sector. Gold mines also provide work and much-needed income for the country. Fiji’s most important industry is tourism, and many of Fiji’s tourists are Australian. In 1987 and 2000, military coups discouraged foreigners from visiting Fiji, which resulted in economic hardship.

Fiji’s major attractions are its natural attributes: the sea, the highlands and the islands. Most visitors to Fiji go to enjoy the beaches, with diving and snorkelling being popular pastimes. The Mamanuca group of islands, off the west coast of Viti Levu, have some of the country’s most beautiful beaches. The Abaca Cultural and Recreational Park, north-east of Nadi, contains waterfalls, rainforests and walking tracks that guide visitors through unimaginable beauty.

In 2000, George Spejght, an indigenous Fijian, led a coup against the Fijian Government. Speight and his followers kept Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry and other Politicians captive for more than three weeks before releasing them and forming their own government. Chaudhry is of Indian Fijian descent. Speight claimed he was representing indigenous Fijians who did not want Indian Fijians to have political rights. Speight was arrested, and power was given to a newly elected president.

To Go to an Expert Travel Agent or Directly to the Operator?

In our lifetimes we hopefully spend more on our travel wants and needs than on any other professional or expert in their chosen fields such as lawyers, accountants, plumbers, electricians, builders, dentists, doctors and we certainly choose them very carefully, so why not use the same quality control when choosing a travel agent. Also, as with our other experts, there may be different agents needed for different destinations and activities, so do not necessariy stay with one agent for all of your travel requirements unless of course the agency has different experts for different products and services.

Japanese Skin Care: 3 Healthy Tips For Younger Looking Skin

Japanese skin care certainly merits a close look.  Combining the Japanese diet, omega-3 fish oil and Japanese skin care product ingredients you surely can have younger looking skin.  Read this article for healthy tips using the Japanese skin care system.

3 Healthy Tips for Japanese Skin Care

1. Multi-Nutrient Supplements
2. Japanese Diet (with Omega-3 fish oil)
3. Skin Care Products with Japanese Ingredients

The Japanese Diet

What the Japanese people eat has a lot to do with how they have such younger looking skin with beautiful complexions.  They eat a  lot of fish from the ocean and some sea vegetables, mainly seaweed.

Tip #1  Fish oil Omega-3

Omega-3 is high in fish especially fish from the sea.  Also Omega-3 fatty acid can be derived from plants. I’ll cover that in a moment.  Fish oil as a source of Omega-3 fatty acid is very important but care should be taken as to where you get it.   Not al fish oil is equal or even safe.  The best source for purity that I found was with a company in the South Pacific. They distill the fish to remove the impurities and encapsulate for preservation.

Japan, because it is  an island nation, depends on the ocean for a lot of its food supply.  The Japanese have been doing this for centuries, eating fish daily, usually fresh caught.  This routine obviously has been beneficial in many ways.  One main reason is that it has become part of the culture and passed on to the next generation.  This is a routine we would do well to copy.

Tip#2 Plant Omega-3

As mentioned Omega-3 is found in plants as well as in fish.  Green veggies, especially the leafy type, are good.  Japanese consume sea veggies, namely, Wakame.  Wakame is a seaweed that has skin enhancing properties.  Combining the fish oil with the sea kelp has resulted in some beautiful women.  Also when you take the same basic ingredients from fish and plants and merge them into a skin care product, wow!!

Tip#3 Skin Care Products -Truly Natural

Blending the above ingredients into a skin care product makes for a powerful combination.  To repeat: A. Eat a high quality diet that consists of fish oil and wakame seaweed or you can take a supplement that makes it much easier.  See my website for an excellent recommended source. B.  Use daily a skin care line that incorporates the above in its products.

Again some companies make high quality fish oil supplements and a few use wakame seaweed in their multi-nutrient supplements.  Combining the two makes a very effective health care plan.  But it also makes a very beautiful looking skin.  Of course, be sure that your source of ingredients come from a reputable company that stands behind its product.

So to repeat the 3 healthy tips for Japanese skin care:  Use fish oil that is carefully processed for purity.  I found that the Hoki fish makes a very good Omega-3 source that gives great results.  The seaweed I mentioned is called Phytessence Wakame.  It is used by the same South Pacific company that manufactures the fish oil (HOKI) and the multi-nutrient supplements.  I recommend them because I use them daily and am very pleased with the results.  For more information and complete details, please see my website listed below. -Margaret Bell

About Samoa

Samoa, or the Independent State of Samoa, to give the country its official name, is a country located off the North West coast of Australia. It is a part of the Samoan Islands archipelago in the South Pacific Ocean.

With a population of just over 180,000, you are not likely to bump into anyone real soon. In spite of such a small population and a secluded existence however Samoa is a picturesque surfing spot where you can enjoy a perfect surfing holiday.

Important

Due to the effect of tides and wind on the surf, conditions in Samoa usually makes impossible to surf all day.  If your main holiday objective is to surf all day every day then Samoa may not be the destination for you. On most days a 3-5 hour surf trip departs early morning and returns before lunch, then there is the possibility of surfing directly out front of the resort later in the day.

If you are planning a surfing holiday now, plan it through World Surfaris. They are the experts in surf travel. The respected leaders with over 20 years surf experience, they can arrange the best surf trips to the Maldives, Indonesia, Mentawais, Sumatra, PNG, Caroline Islands, South Pacific and heaps more regions where the surf is pumping. They have surf trips to perfect uncrowded reef-breaks with just you and your mates. World Surfaris represent a diverse range of “Unique Surf Adventures” catering to all standards of surfers and their budgets. A major ingredient for success hav been maintaining the highest customer service standards whilst selling at very competitive prices.

A team of highly experienced travel consultants ensures that travel arrangements are handled with the maximum professionalism. The motto “Get the hell out of Here” is an apt way to describe the company philosophy. World Surfaris have the largest range of surf boats and surf resorts available for all budgets. If you need maximum surfing time with minimum hassle then they will have the surf trip for you. For any further information please visit www.worldsurfaris.com.

Surfing – riding the waves

Man has always enjoyed grappling with and subduing the forces of nature. In most cases, such an encounter with the full force of rampaging nature leads to total destruction and chaos for humans, such as in the case of hurricanes and tsunamis. In some cases however, man has actually been able to control nature and use it for his own enjoyment and recreation; the prime example of this being surfing.

The Capella Lodge for a Romantic Vacation

Edit Article |

A Romantic Getaway Package to Capella Lodge an exclusive boutique hotel situated on the southern end of Lord Howe Island in the South Pacific, is one that few people even know about. The fact is that Lord Howe Island is in the South Pacific, yet it is only two hours flying time from Australia, and it still remains almost unknown to the world at large.

Lord Howe Island has the distinction of having the most southerly coral reef in the world, and it is the island that boasts one of the best exclusive small boutique hotels in Australia called the Capella Lodge.

Capella Lodge is perched above Lover’s Bay and is unique on Lord Howe Island in that is looks out over the ocean, the lagoon, and the mountains.

With a maximum of twenty guests, the elegant Capella Lodge is totally understated luxury, and so attracts really discerning guests who want and expect the best. Capella Lodge gives guests the kind of sophisticated weekend getaway that they feel comfortable with.

What you will get is a variety of high quality accommodation in nine suites, based on three Capella Suites, four Lagoon Lofts, the Capella Family Suite, and The Lidgbird Suite which is the Premium Suite with a wrap around veranda and a private plunge spa. If you want to bring children, then they will need to be over six years of age.

The quality of the furnishings in the Suites are of impeccable taste, with every detail thought of.

There are a huge number of things to do which is one reason this beautiful island and this exclusive boutique hotel are the ideal destination for a romantic honeymoon. This includes Lagoon Canoeing, Mountain Biking, Snorkeling, Cycling, Golf, Tennis, Boat Cruises and glass bottomed boats, Scenic flights to name but a few. You need to enjoy the stunning beaches and the crystal clear water.

Eating and drinking at the Capella Lodge is yet another reason to stay. The Capella Restaurant has stunning views of the lagoon and the mountains. The menus are contemporary and the quality is of the highest order. The service just adds to the atmosphere and this has to be the best restaurant on Lord Howe Island. What is even better is that the price includes not only the wonderful meals but also best quality wines.

In fact the staff at the Capella Lodge are of the very best, from remembering guests names, and they have an uncanny knack of seeming to anticipate what you want accurately time after time.

If you want to sit in the best place to see the sunset over the South Pacific then Gower’s Terrace is it. There is a relaxation area with a wet edge infinity plunge pool as a bonus.

Finally the Makambo Bar with its great cocktails, wines and coffee, and the Kentia Lounge with its open fire in the winter, just seal the deal as far as the Capella Inn being just the greatest romantic honeymoon getaway you will find anywhere in thie part of the world that is the South Pacific.

Explore the Pacific on a Luxurious Cruise Vacation

What could be more romantic than a luxurious cruise vacation on the Pacific Ocean? You’ll feel like royalty when you board a big ocean liner and are greeted by friendly staff anxious to make your trip the most pleasant experience of your life.Book a cruise on the Norwegian Star for a 7-night dream vacation that you’ll remember forever. This ship leaves from Los Angeles and makes calls at Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan, and Puerto Vallarta. These exotic Mexican ports will welcome you with their delights, but it’s the ship itself that will fulfill all your wants.

This is freestyle cruising at its best, with a wide variety of staterooms and suites from which to choose, as well as plenty of dining options and entertainment. Treat yourself to a massage or facial in the Barong Spa, relaxing in ultimate luxury before you take a stroll along the deck. Or, if you prefer activities, head for the Fitness Center for a spinning class or take part in basketball, shuffleboard, or one of the other deck sports available. This elegant ship has plenty of shopping for yourself or gifts for friends, plus it has a library, card room, and an Internet café.

Entertainment is plentiful, too, with cabaret shows and dancing in Dazzles Lounge or full production shows in the Stardust Theater. Book the Pacific Princess for a fourteen day Amazon River Cruise. You’ll see plenty of ocean along the way, plus you’ll visit exotic South American cities like Parintins and Boca Do Valerio. You’ll even get to explore Devil’s Island off the coast of French Guiana. But while you’re aboard ship, you’ll find plenty to see and do as well.

Try your luck in the casino or watch one of the numerous shows. There’s even dance music for you to while away the night. Then you’ll head back to your luxurious suite or comfortable cabin for a few hours’ rest before starting all over again. You’ll never run out of things to do on board this beautiful ship as she cruises across the Pacific waters.Visit several South Pacific ports of call when you travel on board the Crystal Serenity.

Crystal Cruises will take you to Polynesia and Bora Bora, as well as the Cook Islands. You’ll even cross the International Dateline, something that few people in the world will ever do. This twelve-day cruise will even take you to Aukland in New Zealand. Watch the innumerable yachts that sail in and out of the harbors of Auckland, which is known as the City of Sails. Enjoy the nightlife of the city, but don’t forget that you can have plenty of fun on board the Crystal Serenity, too.

This ship offers entertainment and swimming, plus plenty of relaxation. Kick back on the deck and enjoy the warm Pacific breeze or enjoy a few hours in the onboard Spa and Beauty Salon. If you’re in the mood for cooler weather and spectacular Alaskan views, book a 7-night cruise aboard the Norwegian Pearl. Departing from Vancouver, this ship makes stops at Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, Prince Rupert, and Seattle.

This brand new addition to the fleet of Norwegian Cruise Lines has every luxury you can imagine, plus a few that you can’t. Accommodations include luxurious staterooms and suites, but for the ultimate in sailing pleasure, you might book one of the Courtyard Villas. These lavish accommodations share a private-access courtyard that contains a hot tub and pool as well as their own exercise room, sundeck, and cabanas.

You’ll feel as if you’re part of an exclusive club when you book one of these villas. The ship offers twelve dining options and eleven bars and lounges for you to kick back and relax. If you feel like working off some of the delicious food, head to the onboard bowling alley or rock climbing wall. There’s plenty to do on board this stunning ship, but there’s plenty more to see when you step onto one of the decks. Watch whales and dolphins cruise alongside the ship or just gaze at the fantastic Alaskan scenery.

Of course, you can’t beat a cruise to Hawaii. Holland America Line offers the MS Zaandam out of San Diego. This fourteen day cruise crosses the warm, wide Pacific Ocean, headed for Hilo,Nawiliwili, Honolulu, and other ports of call. The wonderful tropical weather and breathtaking sights around Honolulu will have you wondering why you never took this cruise before—and when you can take it again. You’ll have time to explore the rainforests and volcanoes of Hawaii, plus you can relax on one of Hawaii’s beautiful beaches.

Of course during those times you’re aboard ship, you’ll enjoy comfortable accommodations, as well as lots of fun activities. Swim in one of the two outdoor pools, or hit the water inside. There are Jacuzzis, too, for relaxing with your friends. Music, dancing, entertainment…it’s all on board the Zaandam. The Pacific Ocean is waiting for you. You’ll surely find a cruise ship that is going where you’ve always longed to go.

Scientology Volunteer Ministers Help Samoa Recover from Tsunami

Edit Article |

Posted: Oct 10, 2009 |

]]>

A team of Scientology Volunteer Ministers is helping Samoa recover from the tsunami that hit the island early Tuesday, September 29.  The tidal waves carried entire villages out to sea and killed at least 140.

An 8.0 earthquake 120 miles off the coast jolted people awake in Samoa at 6:48 that morning.  Ten minutes later the first of four 15- to 20-foot-high waves pounded the shore and surged inland, destroying everything in their path.

Alerted to the disaster, Scientologists from Sydney, Australia, flew to the devastated island.  There, they joined a team of Samoans who trained to be Volunteer Ministers in 2008 when the Scientology Volunteer Ministers South Pacific Goodwill Tour was in that country. They are working together to help local officials provide basic services for several thousand survivors living in emergency shelters since the disaster occurred.

The Scientology Volunteer Ministers have set up their bright yellow tent as a headquarters for their relief activities.  There, at shelters and in villages throughout the island, they provide Scientology Assists—simple procedures developed by Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard that help people recover from the emotional and spiritual effects of trauma, illness and injury.

“Our Scientology Assists are the ’spiritual first-aid’ people need in a disaster,” said Mathew Andrews, leader of the Scientology Volunteer Ministers South Pacific Goodwill Tour who is coordinating the Volunteer Ministers disaster relief in Samoa.  “People who are grieving, in pain or fixated on the tragedy become extroverted and bright and start planning again for the future.  We helped a man who was in pain, struggling to walk.  Today we saw him in town.  He was smiling and walking easily and came up to me to shake my hand.”

For more information or to join the relief effort in Samoa contact the Volunteer Ministers Consultant at vm@volunteerministers.org.  To learn more about the Scientology Volunteer Ministers program visit their web site at www.volunteerministers.org .

Pura Vida. It’s the catchphrase that’s come to symbolize the desire to enjoy the best lifestyle possible…simple, relaxed, and in tune with your surroundings. And there’s one place in Costa Rica that offers that Pura Vida lifestyle…for less. You can buy your own slice of this pure paradise for as little as ,000.

Where is this place? It’s Costa Rica’s South Pacific coast.

Costa Rica’s South Pacific is home to the country’s most pristine and spell-binding scenery. Cloud-ringed mountain peaks, covered in emerald-green rainforest, drop dramatically to sweeping sandy beaches. Crashing waterfalls tumble down the mountain slopes. Roads have crossings for tapirs and monkeys…beaches have look-out points for whales and dolphins…and you can breakfast alfresco in the company of toucans, tiny jewel-bright hummingbirds, and palm-sized blue butterflies.

And there’s not a high-rise condo tower or all-inclusive resort in sight…

It sounds exactly like the kind of place that should attract swarms of property buyers. But it hasn’t…until now. That’s because it was tough getting here. The coastal highway was in bad shape.  But the upgraded, re-surfaced coastal highway opened a year ago, cutting the drive time from Costa Rica’s capital, San Jose, to three hours. It’s now a quick, easy and comfortable drive.

Better yet, plans call for an international airport here.  And we know what that can do for property prices…

Right now, ,000 buys you a lot in the South Pacific, in the most established community, Pacific Lots. In its 21st year, this growing community has attracted Americans, Canadians, Europeans, Asians, and Costa Ricans. The development is set against a stunning mountain backdrop, with expansive ocean views.

You can take advantage of this unspoiled setting. You can go sport fishing…zip lining…sea kayaking …swim, surf or snorkel in the warm tropical waters…trek through the rainforest…bird watch…or try white water rafting.

You can enjoy this hidden corner of Costa Rica, without sacrificing home comforts or little luxuries. You can get Internet and phone service, and satellite TV.  You can pick up warm French baguettes, or linger over an espresso and pastry at the coffee shop…buy Cuban cigars, Swiss chocolate, imported cheese, and champagne at the delicatessen…and enjoy Indonesian, organic, French or Italian food in the local restaurants.

Pacific Lots offers lots with mountain views from ,000…and lots with killer ocean views from ,000.  There are no time limits to build. You can either build your own home, or the developer can build for you.  Luxury custom construction runs around 0 a square foot.

Come and see for yourself, on a Pacific Lots Discovery Tour. These four-day, three-night trips for just 0 will let you try out the Pura Vida lifestyle, and see if it fits. The 0 cost of the tour is credited against the purchase price of a property if you buy. Just book your flight to San Jose, and we’ll take care of the rest…accommodations, meals, and transport. You can check out our community…built homes, and those under construction…see the little villages and beaches close by…immerse yourself in this gorgeous eco-wonderland…and decide if it’s right for you. GO HERE NOW TO FIND OUT MORE/RESERVE.

Steve Linder

P.S. Our area of the country is now rivaling some of the best locations on the entire Pacific coast… at substantial savings.  This area will be the new Malibu, Carmel or Big Sur at a fraction of the cost. Don’t wait until we have nothing left to sell. Come see us on a Discovery Tour before it’s too late. CONTACT info@PacificLots.com HERE TO FIND OUT MORE/RESERVE.
